Pennsylvania State Police say they have a tentative identification for a body found in a chest freezer in central Pennsylvania last week, but the cause of death remains unknown.

The York Dispatch reports two potential home buyers found the body Thursday in an outbuilding on a vacant Warrington Township property. Authorities said the remains were in black trash bags covered by a blanket.

York County Coroner Pam Gay said the body appeared to be female and was “significantly decomposed” but an autopsy today revealed no obvious signs of trauma. She said more tests are needed to determine whether the death was natural, accidental or otherwise.

The coroner said the body appears to be a female but hasn't been identified. State police said they suspect it is an elderly woman. They have been talking to a woman who is believed to be her granddaughter.

WGAL's Ed Weinstock spoke with the woman Monday outside her home in York County. We aren't identifying her because she hasn't been charged in the case. She told Ed that state police think she's involved in the case, and she said it's a major possibility she will face charges. She denied any involvement.

Interesting...Is there more information on how the police speculate she died?

I ask as I've read about similar cases before(also coincidentally in rural PA) where a senior dies and the relatives will store/hide the body and not report the death to continue collecting the deceased's social security checks.

Wonder if this could be the case here? Especially given her estimated age.

If they had a "tenative" ID back in Feb, why would this person be put into NAMUS? Was it not the person that they thought it was?

Probably to get the DNA ball rolling. They did the same thing with Mary Arcuri and the Garfield (Pittsburgh) remains. Since they went through NamUs for DNA and ID, both cases were added to NamUs database even though they were certain who the remains were.

The York Daily Record reports that state police said in a warrant application that they want to search a 60-year-old woman “for the purpose of obtaining a DNA reference sample" to help positively identify remains found in February in York County's Warrington Township.

Authorities have said they believe the remains, which were in black trash bags covered by a blanket, are those of an elderly woman who may have died in another county. The coroner said last month that her office was waiting on DNA results to rule on the cause and manner of death.

DILLSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Authorities say they have a suspect but are waiting for DNA analysis before filing charges in a case where skeletal remains were found stuffed in an old freezer at a Warrington Township property a year ago.

The DNA will be used to identify the remains found at 40 Kralltown Road.

“It would be nicer if it came in quicker, but you have to remember we are dealing with some pretty decomposed remains,” York County Coroner Pam Gay said.

Police seized a woman's DNA and financial records as part of an ongoing homicide investigation after skeletal remains were found in a freezer in northern York County in February.

In the warrant application, Pennsylvania State Police say they want to search a 60-year-old woman "for the purpose of obtaining a DNA reference sample by way of buccal swab of the inner cheek to be used for the comparison and identification of human remains."

In the months following the grisly discovery, police obtained financial records related to federal payments the deceased woman was receiving. Police believe these payments were collected and placed in bank accounts long after the woman had died, the warrants state.

A 61-year-old Pennsylvania woman was arrested Wednesday and charged with theft and abuse of corpse for allegedly hiding her dead grandmother’s body in a freezer for 15 years so she could collect the woman’s Social Security benefits, state police said.

Cynthia Carolyn Black of York County had told police during their more than yearlong investigation that she had found Glenora Reckford Delahay dead inside their home in the Delaware County section of Ardmore in March 2004, police said.

Black carried the body to the basement and put it in a freezer because, she said, she needed her grandmother’s Social Security income.

The grandmother was 97 when she died.
