Recovered/Located NV - Ronnie (found deceased) & Beverly Barker (taken for med care), RV trip, Stagecoach, 27 Mar 2022

  • #441
For some reason, this case has hit me harder than most. I can't imagine how I would react if my parents or grandparents suddenly went missing when they were supposed to be having a nice vacation. I really, really wanted them both to be found alive.
I agree. This one got me. I tend to avoid cases with older adults. I wish I didn’t because they need attention just like any other but it’s too hard on me emotionally. The hashtag #TrustTheFamily seems to be appropriate in this case too. Although, I really don’t know all of the efforts to search. So sad.

Something just told me to come and check this thread. I’m so sad to learn of the news of the loss of Mr. Barker and what must be/have been a tragic and traumatic experience for Mrs. Barker. Prayers offered up. I had held out hope that if they’d gotten stuck they’d have enough food, water, and shelter to hang on for rescue. Rest In Peace.

Indianapolis man missing in Nevada dies; wife taken to hospital | wthr.com

Family members tell 13News Ronnie and Beverly Barker were found Tuesday evening on a mountain west of Silver Peak, about 3 1/2 hours northwest of Las Vegas.

Ronnie Barker is deceased, according to a family member. His wife was found alive and is being transported to Reno for medical care.

I was so happy to come here and see that they were found, even though the news wasn't the best.

It sounds like he died doing something he loved. Now, to read the rest of the thread.

An update with the GPS for the location where the RV was found was shared on Facebook.

Seems extremely remote. Is there a road from Silver Peak to this location? It looks like a road south of Coaldale was more likely their route?

This has left me hornswoggled and now moreso.

Ronnie and Beverly Barker - Google My Maps

I added the coordinates and driving directions. Google Maps does have a route, on Coyote Rd, but I have (very) serious doubts that a car could travel it, much less an RV.

ETA: Google Maps charted two routes, attached here:

glad that they have been found.. sorry for Ron's passing.... i heard RV was found stuck in ditch... not yet sure of location.. i live here... BUT... it was reported the Kia has not been found...????

Coyote Rd. is a well graded county road... cars can travel it... even tractor-trailers... an operating mine is near the summit..

This case has me thinking we should be bringing back OnStar into every vehicle.

This is such a sad outcome. I'm so sorry for this family's loss. Prayers for a Mrs. Barker, especially.

There is a road. Two, in fact, so it seems, but probably not the best roads for RV travel. One is Nivloc and the other is Coyote/Coyote Springs. I'm not local, however, and am only going by reading the maps when the search was on near Nivloc Road and Silver Peak.

Posters on the FB page stated several times how GPS had led them off of 95 by heading towards Silver Peak. But once there, the turn was left on a road which headed back to 95 south of Tonopah. I really don't understand why they apparently turned right and headed up into a mountainous area.

Hoping Bev is getting some rest and whatever else she needs to recover. She will have the story to tell when she's able.

I’m so sorry to hear the news of Ron’s passing and I’m sure Bev went through quite a traumatic ordeal. Thoughts are with their family and I hope Bev is able to recover.

This is extremely sad news. Ron was a good friend and I'll miss him. I'm glad Bev made it. I hope we get answers soon. I haven't read all of this thread so I may be wrong, but this does seem like it may have been a situation where they simply got lost? Why on earth did the authorities wait so freaking long to search?

I've been following this case, hoping for a good outcome. So sorry it turned out this way.

Very little info from LE in any of the Indy news.

These maps show just how isolated this area is. The first is a closeup of the coordinates released by the family. The second shows the closest towns - Silver Peak and Dyer.
I can’t imagine being up there alone in the dark and trying to find your way out with no cell or gps service. The Barkers may have stayed where they were stuck with the rv for several days hoping that someone would come along. If they started running low on food and water, they may have decided to try and find their way out with the Kia.
Very sad situation either way.

Very sorry for the loss of your friend, @IndyColtsFan.
My thoughts on the delays in searching in this case may have been that no one was initially sure which jurisdiction should be the lead agency. Generally, when someone goes missing, it is from a static location. In that case, the jurisdiction would fall to the the agency where the person was last seen. In this case, the missing parties were on the move and until cell records started coming in it would be hard to determine the last known location. To make matters worse, it was a couple of days before anyone realized they were missing. That is not anyone’s fault. They were off on a road trip enjoying life.
As a loved one, family or friend, you want every resource searching everywhere for the missing person. Logistically, this does not work. To have a productive search, you need to be able to narrow the search down to the smallest likely area and work your way out from there.
I think we might need to put in place a procedure for a case such as this whereby it would be the State Police who begin the investigation, start collecting cell, credit card, and other records, and then they determine which agency would be most appropriate to take the lead. In the meantime, a general statewide BOLO could be sent out.
I know this won’t alleviate the pain of your loss, but it may help authorities develop some new procedures which could help speed up some of the processes to get searches in action in this type of case.

This case has me thinking we should be bringing back OnStar into every vehicle.
All new Kia vehicles are equipped with Kia Connect so that is a start. I think all new vehicles of all makes should be required to have some type of location service.

Google Maps

It would appear based on the images I was able to find. That they appeared to take a R turn from the Road coming from Dyer onto a road towards the top of Red Mountain. The coordinates on my map show that it was an intersection that goes 3 ways one north, back the way they came, and one towards the southeast

Missing Indianapolis couple found in Nevada
"
Why didn’t a Silver Alert come sooner?
Eight days after their disappearance, a Silver Alert was issued Monday night in Nevada. The delay frustrated family members, who believed there was too much red tape involved in activating the alert.

Jennifer Whaley, another daughter, said local authorities hesitated to issue a Silver Alert because her parents weren’t Nevada residents. Authorities eventually made an exception.

“They reason they weren’t going to give a Silver Alert is that they aren’t residents of Nevada. That, to me, is insane. What does that have to do with anything? They’re missing in your state. So… it’s frustrating,” Jennifer said."
