It looks like he was moving the opposite direction to me, IMO

Last phone call on the phone associated with the missing man was in Julian, which is south of the other points he had been. Palm Springs/Morongo/Thermal/Julian is what I see. Moving south. At least, his phone was moving south. Thermal and Julian are desert tourism towns, for people who like the Inland Empire/Desert areas.

Julian is in San Diego County, south of San Bernardino County. Thermal is in Riverside County, north of San Diego County.

So three jurisdictions to coordinate here.

IMO

This is American MSM no? (It's the same news site that was linked in post #1)

"Chinese news outlets and family friends of Fang have indicated that the man Fang was traveling with was John Root Fitzpatrick, a 52-year-old from Morongo Valley."
...
"The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is not releasing any information related to the case, including whether there is a criminal investigation."

eta @Laughing I don't know, the translating service on the Chinese websites that are posting about her just says Chinese (simplified). If that helps.
Scary history.

Doesn't look promising. Did they take the wrong road and vanish into the desert?
This doesn't like the same man with Fang in the vehicle.

Same chin/jaw and hairline, IMO. I think it's just that the missing photo was taken at a completely different (unflattering) angle from below, rather than above. In the car, his sunglasses cover his eyebrows. Also he may have lost weight in later pic.

The article I just linked says flew to LA and took a train to Palm Springs “area”
I'm not sure where an Amtrak bus might drop off, but in one of the photos frequently used in new stories Fang is definitely posed in front of the Palm Springs airport. (MOO only, but my opinion as someone who has been to that airport dozens of times.)

Thinking about it more. This photo looks like it was taken with a selfie stick perhaps, which would potentially denote she was alone. Behind her is the airport. It's a tiny place. Where she is standing she is walking away from main airport. Across the road from her are extra (long term) parking areas and one of the roads that leaves the area. I've never caught an Amtrak bus from there, but just checked and they do drop off at the airport. According to this online map their drop off would be on the other side of the main airport from where she is standing.

I always also thought this is a selfie. I think the car photo is likely a selfie too.

From that latest kesq article already linked here earlier:
Authorities confirm link in two missing person cases in Morongo Basin

"They were supposed to go camping, but the amount of time was not disclosed. There are both still listed as voluntary missing. The investigation is ongoing at this time," [SBCSD PIO Mara Rodriguez] wrote.

To say “voluntary missing”…I feel like that must mean that their investigation thus far has not turned up anything showing unlawful or nefarious behavior or intent by either missing person, would that be right? Does that then point, then, rather, that it may be more likely a misadventure, some unfortunate incident ?

I was searching to see if there had been any updates and the Chinese media has way more pics than were released to US media. This is from a simple google search. I find that curious. Perhaps mistrust of Americans and media?

Has it been posted anywhere what province in China Fang Jin is from?
Fang Jin is from Guangdong Province, according to the following Chinese news article. 47岁中国女子赴美见男网友失踪,女儿焦急发文
For what it's worth, the article also states that she knows some (略懂) English and brought thousands of dollars in cash. I can't access the English articles on my current connection in China, so I apologize for any repetitive information.

Oh, I hope that's a false rumour.

JMO

As much as I don't think that's what happened... she could be ok and missing by her own accord if true.
I'm still not sure what to make of the man being missing too, especially him being reported missing a week after.
Is he missing or running from something?

Translation:
According to the US "World News Network" and California local media "Hi-Desert Star" on the 10th, a Chinese woman took thousands of dollars to the United States to meet male netizens in July, but lost contact with her family on July 22

According to reports, the missing woman Jin Fang is from Guangdong, China and is 47 years old. More than half a year ago, Jin Fang met John Root Fitzpatrick, a male netizen living in San Bernardino County, California, online, and the two met in California in mid-July.

According to the report, John, 52, is an American veteran who was sentenced to probation for assaulting others. He drove a blue pickup truck while picking up Jin Fang. Jin Fang's friend also mentioned that Jin Fang knew a little English. This was her first time in the United States and she left with thousands of dollars in cash.
