I know what you're saying but this particular criminal is concealed within a cloud of identities and it's important to understand what is real and what is not here. So many different interpretations have been posted here on him but there's got to be a way to weed through the info and identity cloud to find the truth. The last thing anyone wants is for him to get away with his crimes because of an insanity plea or confusion. If we can understand that he was motivated to carry out very organized crimes and not just acting out impulsively, it will go a long way to keeping him behind bars.

Further, I don't think it helps human beings to think of each other as monsters or non-entities. Even if Luka is somewhat of a monster now he was once recognizably human (like in his childhood photos) and something went wrong. It behooves society to understand how to prevent its members from becoming this destructive, if possible.

I'm not trying to add to a mountain of sensationalism and surmise. I'm trying to get to the heart of what has happened.

Con men have multiple identities. It's not really a "new" thing for a criminal to have multiple identities, and there's no relationship between having multiple identities and being insane. Newman is charged with premeditated murder, so police already have evidence that he did not act impulsively.

All sweet children turn into adults ... some of whom commit murder.

Remember Luka's monthly $200 medical expense? While perusing his twitter account I found that one of his "followed" links was to a twitter site about Lowe Syndrome, a physical condition causing mental and physical problems. It stood out among the other links because they tended to follow similar links or to fit certain themes like "white supremacy" or "Russian people".

Supposedly Magnotta was bullied by other kids at school while growing up. A physical/mental condition could add to a feeling of inadequacy. Perhaps he struggled his whole life and felt he wasn't given due credit or had to overcompensate for his condition. And maybe a lot of hatred built up toward people for their unfair treatment and what he perceived as their lack of virtue in the face of adversity. This might cause him to relate to white supremacists more, seeing them as underdogs for a cause no one understood. And he might have been looking for the perfect scapegoat to project his suffering onto.

...am considering whether he might be a hermaphrodite. That could explain the choice of transexual girlfriends and add to a feeling of persecution as well.

Maybe if he had a physical condition his family would be more protective of him even after he committed criminal acts. For example, when his mother acted as guardian for a 22 year-old Luka charged with sexual assault and various other things.

Am I just grasping at straws here?

The trial judge will serve an important role as the gatekeeper of evidence to ensure that features of bad character, such as Magnotta's possible involvement in animal cruelty, are excluded from the trial.

Thank you, BorgQueen.

As much as I'm sure it pains some people to read that, it's the way the Canadian judiciary works to ensure a fair trial on the charges laid. I provided a link earlier (twice) to try to explain it.

It all boils down to whether or not he knew what he was doing and he knew it was wrong but decided to do it anyway. Contrast that to the bath salts Miami case. I would guess that that guy did not know what he was doing. Both clearly have psychological issues, but there is a clear distinction of doing something knowingly and doing something because you are out of your mind and you have no control because you don't even know what you are doing.

I hope those who aren't familiar with the Canadian legal system and haven't bothered to take the time to educate themselves on it (it's all laid out on Canadian government websites - surely self-proclaimed sleuths can find it) don't continue to shoot the messengers.

I find that it can be most frustrating at times. I was miffed, to say the least, when I found out what 'character evidence' was left out of the Rafferty trial. But that is the way it works here. It can be a good thing, and it can be a bad thing, depending on what the jury decides. But it is what it is.
While I do think he should also face animal cruelty charges (and charges for every other illegal thing he has done), that is, unfortunately, unlikely. That's our justice system, love it or hate it.

In my opinion, whatever his mental health issues may be, he knew what he was doing.

I doubt he has Lowe Syndrome,it's a genetic disorder that mostly affects the eyes, isn't it?It is odd that he chose to follow that Twitter.
Talking about Twitters LM followed:
Have you guys discussed the "Manny" he was following on twitter,is that even allowed to talk about here?
...also I havn't heard about LM's sexual assault charge?

Just catching up reading backward as usual. The "craigslist" article strikes me as amusing. Why on earth would anyone tell a reporter this kind of stuff. The person didn't like the photos of attractive young men, so the responder sent pictures of ugly old men. Bwahahaha! I'm sorry but that just hits my funny bone.

I have no idea if it was LM or not, but I think the article (and info) is useless unless something ties the "threats" to LM.

Bernier, who didn’t know Lin personally, blitzed social media to get word of the vigil out, putting news of it up on several Facebook pages and on Twitter, where it was retweeted dozens of times and picked up by media.

“I’m really happy to see all these people,” she said looking at the crowd, which numbered about 150. “Even though it is really quiet, I can feel the emotion in the air. Myself, I have to say, I’m getting pretty emotional right now.”

French media claiming police found the video on LRM's computer and the original version is 15 minutes long. :(

http://www.journaldemontreal.com/2012/06/14/version-allongee

Thank goodness for google translate. Fills in the blanks where I can't translate, myself. The Canadian education system really needs to step up French education. It is our official second language, so shameful that I can't speak or understand it at all, and can't read it very well.

Anyway... I am surprised that the video is only 15 minutes. Although, I do assume that what was cut out shows his face. Why cut it out, otherwise?
And 'ambient noise'... did the victim identify the suspect by name, which would have been cut out...?

I wonder what those 'other things' that were found on the computer are. And I hope that this computer evidence doesn't end up excluded in the trial.

After the f'up in the Rafferty trial, I'm also concerned. I'm hoping they got the necessary warrants.

An extra 5 minutes is a long time, imo. I hope he messed up and they can see his face in the video.

I have been noticing that Lin Jun's name has been arranged correctly more often, lately. The other day, I asked my overseas friend, who is of Chinese ancestry, what she makes of the name "Jun Lin". Her response was that it is backwards, and should be "Lin Jun". Lin is a Chinese surname, which is written first. Jun is not a surname, but a given name, and would come after the surname.

the cops never listened to the guy from Montana ...

I'm talking about people that saw the tape (yes BG) and informed the police it was LM on it.

Who knows if Montana man actually reported it or just used this as an opportunity to have his "I can be your hero baby" moment?

At this point we really don't know.

Cases like this bring out the vultures big time

Wow, far too much for me to catch up on this morning. And there doesn't seem to be any new news about LM this morning in Canada.

I suppose we're waiting for the extradition at this point.

To ~n/t~, many thanks for the links to LJ's memorial in Montreal.

Too sad.......:rose:

I thought the BG guys defended the posting of the video!

Confusing! :panic:

They defended their right to post it. Although if I recall when I raised the legality of posting the video under Canadian law (the not Al Gore site is hosted in Canada), I was told that said video is illegal.
