'More details are emerging on the Burnaby, B.C., man who disappeared this week under suspicious circumstances—including that he was an outspoken critic of the Iranian regime.
Masood Masjoody, a former Simon Fraser University instructor, was discovered missing after concerned neighbours called the RCMP to check on him.
The case was handed over to homicide investigators due to signs of criminality, the details of which have not been made public.'

''Last year, Masjoody was also declared a vexatious litigant by the B.C. Court of Appeal after he unsuccessfully tried to sue the Burnaby Beacon, a since-shuttered online news publication.
“Masjoody has habitually, persistently, and without reasonable cause commenced or continued vexatious proceedings in the courts of British Columbia,” the May 23, 2025 decision reads, citing seven civil suits and eight appeals he had filed.''

Police in Canada have concluded that a missing Iranian activist was most likely the victim of murder, prompting fears that his disappearance has the hallmarks of a transnational repression campaign targeting critics of Tehran.

Masood Masjoody, a mathematician critical of both Iran’s theocratic regime and the exiled family of the former shah, went missing in early February in the city of Burnaby, British Columbia.

Police are still searching for Masjoody’s body, and a spokesperson for the integrated homicide investigations team, which is part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), said all of the evidence investigators have collected indicates foul play.

'The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is calling on the public to help further its investigation into the suspicious disappearance of Masood Masjoody.

On the evening of February 2, 2026, Burnaby RCMP launched an investigation into the whereabouts of 45-year-old Masood Masjoody after receiving reports from concerned neighbours. Initial investigation by the Burnaby RCMP determined that Mr. Masjoody’s disappearance was out of character and criminality was involved.

IHIT deployed to Burnaby and has assumed conduct of the investigation.

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Masjoody’s disappearance and are calling on those who knew Mr. Masjoody to come forward. At this time, there are no indications to suggest this incident is linked to gangs or extortions.

“We don’t believe Masood’s disappearance was random,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “We believe there are family and friends with important information who have yet to speak with us and we are asking them to come forward. It is essential for us to have all the information available to establish a fulsome timeline.”

Update (2026-02-05):

IHIT is working in close partnership with the Burnaby RCMP and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) as the search for Mr. Masjoody continues.

Investigators are releasing a photo of Mr. Masjoody in order to advance the investigation.

“Mr. Masjoody is known for his online presence and as a mathematician who previously worked in academia,” says Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT. “A person’s background, lifestyle, and affiliations form a part of every IHIT investigation. As with all cases, it will be taken into consideration when identifying a motive.”

“We are aware of the impact Mr. Masjoody’s disappearance has had on his family, friends, and greater community. As the search efforts continue, investigators are providing updates to family as they become available.”

Anyone with information is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448), or by email at [email protected].''

Masjoody's court filings

Masjoody has filed a number of civil lawsuits and appeals since 2020. Last year, a judge found Masjoody had continued “vexatious” proceedings against a large number of parties.

Masjoody lost his job at SFU following a harassment complaint from a colleague. He subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit that was dismissed.

In 2024, Masjoody, who described himself as a “veteran pro‑democracy activist and dissident of the Islamic regime ruling Iran,” sued Reza Pahlavi, who is the son of Iran's last shah and a key figure in the recent Iranian anti-government demonstrations, and the social media website X, as well as more than a dozen other individuals.

Masjoody alleged the defendants defamed him through posts on X, and X was “vicariously liable” for the publication of the statements, according to a judge’s ruling.

That same judgment found an amended civil claim by Masjoody against Reza Pahlavi, X and a number of other defendants was “unnecessary and vexatious” and “embarrassing.”
