3/5/26 Update: Fernandez’s attorneys outlined their request for the judge to consider releasing Fernandez on bond. Fernandez’s attorneys argue his arrest in the case is based on what Tenon originally told investigators, which he is now calling into question. They also point out in their motion that although Fernandez was a person of interest in Bridegan’s murder, he didn’t try to run from the investigation. And, they said, he’s willing to turn over his passport if he’s released. Duval County Circuit Judge London Kite declined to make a decision Thursday on whether Mario Fernandez Saldana should be granted bond. Judge Kite will consider the motion at another pretrial hearing on 3/12/26 @ 9am. It’s unlikely to be granted, as Duval County murder defendants are rarely released on bond. Gardner will return to court on 3/31/26 @ 9am.

Considering Shanna Gardner was denied her request for bond in May 2024, it came as little surprise that the judge did the same for Mario Fernandez Saldana.

Judge London Kite's ruling came almost three years to the day Fernandez Saldana was arrested in the Jared Bridegan murder-for-hire plot.

His defense team on Feb. 20 filed a seven-page motion to set bond following co-defendant Henry Tenon’s guilty plea withdrawal that included an agreement to testify against his landlord Fernandez Saldana and now-estranged wife Gardner.

In court on March 5, Fernandez Saldana’s attorneys argued that without Tenon’s testimony the state has a weak case. His late admissions, which have now come under question, are what led to Fernandez Saldana’s arrest. They reiterated that Tenon had initially repeatedly stated he had nothing to do with this. They also noted that Gardner's children placed Fernandez Saldana in their home at the time of the shooting.

Kite was brief in addressing the court on March 11 about her ruling.

As she similarly stated in Gardner’s request, “the court must consider the exhibits as they are submitted ... so I have done that, and I also considered the responsive showing by the defense. This court has entered a written order with its findings denying the defendant’s motion to set bond and also granting the state’s motion to deny bail.”

Mario Fernandez-Saldana, one of three defendants in the Jared Bridgean murder case, returned to Duval County court Thursday, as the judge conducting proceedings denied his motion requesting bond.

Before denying bail at Thursday morning's hearing, Judge London Kite addressed how she couldn't make a decision during the originally scheduled bond hearing because she needed time to review what was presented in the several hours the defense argued.

Judge Kite noted Thursday's hearing was an Arthur hearing, which is when a judge determines if a person can get bond in a case where they're charged with a no-bond crime. She said because this was not an adjudicatory proceeding, she said the review over presented materials was necessary before she could make a decision.

In the four minutes Fernandez-Saldana's hearing resumed, Kite said, "The court must consider the exhibits as they are submitted in the court within the four corners of those things, and now I've done that." She continued, "I've also considered the response showing by the defense. This court has entered a written order with its findings denying the defendant's motion to deny bond and the state's motion to deny bail."

Fernandez-Saldana's next pre-trial hearing is set for March 31, as well as Gardner's.

In Tenon's court file "on or between 1/4/22 & 2/16/22, in the county of Duval & the State of Florida, did agree, conspire, combine or confederate with other human beings to, unlawfully & from a premeditated design, effect the death of Bridegan."

2/13/26 Update: In a motion filed Friday morning, Tenon said he “will not testify against Gardner or Saldana. Mr. Tenon is seeking to withdraw his previously entered plea of guilty & proceed to trial.” TThe State Attorney’s Office responded, “We are going defer comment until the actual hearing.” Tenon’s attorney, Julie Schlax, declined to comment. Prosecutors initially said they would seek the death penalty in the case but withdrew the death filing last November. Tenon’s original plea deal reduced his charges to second-degree murder with a recommendation of the lesser penalty of 15 years in prison, in exchange for his testimony against Saldana & Gardner. It’s not clear how the motion will affect the state’s case. A hearing on the motion is set for 2/17/26. And a status hearing on 4/7/26 @ 9am.
2/17/26 Update: Motions hearing with Judge London M. Kite presiding. Asst. State attorney Christina Simak Stifler, attorney for defense Julie Schlax & defendant present in jail. 2/20/26 Update: A Duval County grand jury has indicted Tenon, who confessed to killing Jared Bridegan on first-degree murder, child abuse & possession of a firearm by a convicted felon charges. Tenon no longer faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder & accessory after the fact. He was previously charged with second-degree murder, but that charge has been upgraded to first-degree in the indictment. Tenon will be back in court on 3/23/26 @ 9am.

The motion filed with the court Thursday by Tenon’s attorney Julie Schlax states that Tenon “was questioned under oath by prosecutors & made incriminating statements to prosecutors.” According to the motion, “Florida law unequivocally provides that statements made during plea negotiations are inadmissible in any criminal proceeding.” Schlax said in the motion that Tenon was not advised that statements made during the plea agreements “could be used against him if he might later withdraw his plea.”

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. – Henry Tenon, the accused gunman in the Jared Bridegan murder‑for‑hire case, appeared in court for a pre-trial hearing on Monday, his first since withdrawing his 2023 guilty plea.

The newly indicted charge of first-degree murder was read to Tenon, and he pleaded not guilty.

He will return to court on May 4.

Prosecutors told Judge London Kite that they will not be seeking the death penalty against Tenon.

Tenon’s attorneys have filed a motion to suppress statements he made to prosecutors during plea negotiations, now that he has recanted and changed his plea to not guilty.
