how could she be surviving? did she have her wallet with bank/credit cards/cash? or was that in the found bag?

  • #142
So the emergency ping was the Wednesday morning and not the Tuesday?

  • #143
If that timeline is accurate, she would have tied the row boat up and then took the other boat out to sea, not the other way around. Timeline says this boat was found on a sandbank, whilst police have said it drifted down the Essex coast. It looks like a lot of this extra info about the boats is coming from her family.

I wish we had absolute confirmation about when the ping was, because this timeline contradicts earlier information. It makes a huge difference to know whether or not she visited the boatyard on Tuesday morning before she went missing. If she did, that indicates prior planning. If not, then this could be more of a spur of the moment mental health issue.

So far none of this sounds carefully planned to me. Her actions seem all over the shop. More like someone having a psychotic episode. IMO. Whether it was accidental or suicide, I think she'll eventually be found in the water.

Yes this information makes more sense of what they said earlier: she took a small boat to get closer to a bigger boat.

I'm curious that she tried to hotwire a boat with an engine. I wonder if she has experience of boats, that seems like a peculiar and specific thing to do.

  • #146
I wonder what she said she was going to do after lunch with her friend at the university? Did she say she was going back to the library?

I am puzzled by the hotwiring too. I searched on YouTube and there are plenty of instructional videos, but she apparently wasn't using internet on her phone. Is hotwiring general knowledge?

I could see an attempt at hotwiring being part of a manic episode, if indeed that is what she was suffering with…

Conflicting information is what we have. Early reports said Tuesday, later report says Wednesday.

Her uncle, a psychiatrist, was a presenter at the 25th WORLD CONGRESS OF SOCIAL PSYCHIATRY MARRAKECH, MOROCCO. Vitoria accompanied him - quite likely to give more insight into his program.

"Vitória left Brazil to participate in the International Congress of Social Psychiatry , held between the 15th and 17th in the city of Marrakech, Morocco. After the event, she and her uncle, the psychiatrist Adalberto Barreto, taught two in-person courses in the city of Casablanca, also in Morocco."

This describes what is most likely the treatment that Vitoria receives for mental health issues.

"In Brazil, Psychosocial Care Centres deliver multidisciplinary care and often collaborate with Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous practitioners. Designed to replace long-term hospitalisation, the centres offer tiered care depending on patient needs. Staffed by multidisciplinary teams, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, music therapists, and capoeira facilitators, these centres aim to restore autonomy and foster social inclusion.

Clients can access individual therapy, psychosocial workshops, family support, home visits, group therapy, and artistic, educational, or work-related activities, all tailored to their local context. In Brazil’s Spiritist psychiatric hospitals, patients typically have the option to attend Spiritist healing sessions on a voluntary basis in addition to medical treatment. In Brazil’s system, patients might be offered homeopathy, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, healing with medicinal plants, alongside biomedical therapies. You might find in a public clinic in Curitiba or Porto Alegre, a psychiatrist prescribing antidepressants alongside a visiting Pai-de-Santo (Afro-Brazilian healer) conducting a prayer or a nurse trained in Reiki.

Community Therapy in Brazil was pioneered by psychiatrist Adalberto Barreto [her uncle]. Originally developed in the north-eastern favelas and spread nationwide, Community Therapy is a structured group process held in informal settings (like a community centre or even outdoors), where participants sit in a circle and share problems and collectively find solutions or provide support. It integrates local culture – sessions may start with a song or dance and incorporate folk sayings. Participants are encouraged to share personal experiences in a non-hierarchical way, and the therapist or facilitator mostly guides the process but does not lecture. Evaluations of this model have shown reductions in anxiety, depression, and improved community cohesion."

Did she think that the water might be healing? Who knows. Water temperature in the UK is nothing like the water temperature in Brazil.

"Water temperature in Brightlingsea today is 8.2°C. Based on our historical data over a period of ten years, the warmest water in this day in the North Sea near Brightlingsea was recorded in 2007 and was 8.5°C, and the coldest was recorded in 2013 at 4.1°C. Sea water temperature in Brightlingsea is expected to drop to 7.4°C in the next 10 days. March average water temperature in Brightlingsea is 6.9°C, the minimum temperature is 3.1°C, and the maximum is 10°C."

"North and Northeast Brazil coastal spots have typical tropical and subtropical sea water temps: above 80ºF (27ºC) throughout the year. Winter and summer sea water temperatures vary very little: 2-3 degrees, which is not significant for beachgoers."

Contact with Uni of Essex was limited to studying in the library (presumably with Liliane's access card). No mention of meetings to discuss Doctorate or further study.

(This is by the way and from personal experience. We run an environmental NGO in South America, there are many study opportunities available by means of grants from UK and EU. I can count at least 7 who benefitted. All the paperwork is done in the country of origin)

Earlier reports mention that Vitoria was in Britain because she wanted to pursue a doctorate degree. She arrived on Feb 2, and recently completed research and academic training activities at the University of Essex - probably a 4 week condensed course.

"Cops and friends of Brazilian Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto have launched appeals for information about the 30-year-old who had been visiting Britain to investigate the possibility of starting a doctorate.
...

She is understood to have been staying with a female friend living in Colchester and maintained contact with a teacher at the University of Essex where she had reportedly been taking part in some research and academic training activities."

(Translated by me)

g1 (Globo) has put together a timeline that compiles information released by Essex Police and shared by Vitória´s friends and family

January

Vitória left Brazil in order to participate in the International Congress on Social Psychiatry, which took place from the 15th to 17th in Marrakech, in Morocco.

Following the event, she and her uncle, the psychiatrist Adalberto Barreto, gave two courses in Casablanca.

The two of them often give training sessions and lectures on themes relating to Integrated Community Therapy, based on their work carried out in Fortaleza.

February

Vitória arrived in the UK on 2nd February. She stayed at a friend´s house for almost a month, until the 1st March.

March

From Sunday 1st March Vitória went to stay at Liliane Silva´s house. Liliane is also a Brazilian psychologist and lecturer at the University of Essex, in Southend on Sea, 65 km from London.

On Monday, 2nd March, they both went to the university campus in Colchester, about an hour’s drive away. Whilst Liliane lectured, Vitória stayed in the library studying and working on her computer during the morning.

They had lunch together and, at the end of the afternoon met up and returned to Southend on Sea. Vitória spent the night with Liliane´s family.

The disappearance

3rd March

On Tuesday they followed the same routine as the previous day, Vitória studied whilst Liliane lectured.

🕐 At about 7 A.M - Vitória and Liliane went to the University of Essex.

🕐 Between 12.00 and 13.00 - Vitória and Liliane lunched together close to the university.

🕐 At about 13.00 - Vitória took bus 87 along Boundary Road, which passes several buildings at the University of Essex.

🕐 At about 13.30 - Vitória gets out of the bus at Bellfied Avenue, in the coastal city of Brightlingsea.

🕐 At about 14.30 – Security camera images show Vitória in the area of Hurst Green, residential part of Brightlingsea. This image shows Vitória standing in a corner.

🕐 at about 16.45 – After her lectures Liliane was waiting for Vitória at an agreed location, on the university campus. However, Vítora failed to appear, did not answer her phone or reply to messages.

Liliane searched for Vitória on the campus for almost two hours, with the help of security personnel from the university. She also contacted Vitória´s family members, who said that the last contact they had had was at approximately 13.44.

🕐 Unspecified time during the afternoon - Resident Justin Francis was walking with his dog and partner in Brightlingsea, when he saw a woman matching Vítoria´s description, who introduced herself as Vitória.

He told the BBC that the woman approached them and asked whether she could enter their house, without explaining why. Only later did Francis realise that he could have helped a missing person.

4th March

🕐 Shortly after midnight - Security camera footage shows a person, believed by police to be Victoria, jumping over a fence towards a shipyard near a marina in Brightlingsea.

🕐 00.16 – Security camera footage shows Victoria alone near the marina.

🕐 Unspecified time – Images shown by the police to Vitória's family show a person taking a small boat and rowing alone. This person rowed for about 100 m until reaching a pontoon where there were other larger boats. The person tied the boat near this pontoon and headed towards the larger boats.

🕐 00.06 – A boat moored at a pontoon was untied and taken from the location. The boat's radio was not switched on, and the owner only noticed its absence in the morning.

🕐 At about 08.00 – The last location recorded by Vitória's mobile phone indicated a position in the North Sea. Her friend Fernanda Silvestre, a psychologist who lives in Fortaleza, received this location, which was shared by Vitória's phone.

🕐 At about 10h30 – The boat that had been taken from Brightlingsea was found on a sandbar close to Bradwell Beach. Police did not find a life jacket that belonged to the vessel. The life jacket was orange and horseshoe-shaped.

The boat's engine had exposed wires, indicating that Vitória had tried to connect the wires to get the engine to run.

🕐 13.45 – Vitória's boyfriend, Janilson, arrived in London. Given that his arrival was expected, family members had hoped she would go to the airport to meet him. However, she did not turn up.

Vitória's mother, Gleyz Barreto, decided to travel to London and arrived on the same day. Vitória's absence at the airport served to increase the concern of family and friends. Subsequently, Essex Police were notified of her disappearance.

9th March

🕐 At about 14.00 – A resident found a bag matching the description of the one Victoria was using on the day of her disappearance. The bag, which had the inscription "People Over Profit," was found in a grassy area near Copperas Road.

The road is located near Brightlingsea marina, where security camera footage captured a person walking towards the shipyard.

Searches continue

On Friday (13th March), the searches entered their tenth day, with activities in the Bradwell-On-Sea region. Speaking to g1, Liliane Silva stated that she also went to this area with Vitória's mother and boyfriend, trying to trace her movements.

“We understand that now, 10 days after her disappearance, she may be returning to a normal state of thought, coherence, and reasoning. Therefore, she needs a safe space in order to seek help and return home”.

The lecturer explains that the bag found in Brightlingsea, close to where she boarded the first boat, did not contain essential items. For example, her mobile phone, passport, credit cards and computer have not yet been found.

It has not been ruled out that these items could still be with Vítoria. Family members have been instructed not to attempt to access any of Vitória's accounts, such as her social media or apps. The purpose being that, if there is a new attempt to access them, investigators will be able to trace a new location leading to her.

According to Liliane, the British government has been monitoring hospitals and also checking access to airports, ports, and land borders, concluding that, so far, Vitória has not left the United Kingdom.
well hell, now i wonder how much of the information i'd been working with was garbled by chinese whispers, multiple translations, and confusion. and if it was, i feel silly for not having been more careful what i assumed.

i think i believe *this* report over others where they contradict each other, because this one paints a simpler, less bizarre picture. the emergency ping is no longer mysteriously the morning before, nor necessarily from the boatyard, which takes away a second, earlier visit to the boatyard i thought had been made, and therefore takes away the planning and long-term coherence in her actions that i'd been imagining. the rowboat is no longer tied up at bradwell-on-sea, and is instead tied to the pontoon she rowed out to to try to hotwire the bigger boat, which makes perfect sense. and the bigger boat is simply stuck in sand in bradwell-on-sea, which can be accounted for from another fact that we already know: she untied it from the pontoon. it may have simply drifted over.

we know she failed to hot-wire the bigger boat, so its arrival at bradwell was unpowered. probably also unsteered. almost has to be drift that got it there. so where did she go after her failed hot-wire attempt? she did not get back in the rowboat, because it was still tied to the pontoon. we no longer have strong evidence she arrived in bradwell, though it's still possible she drifted all the way over there and hopped off. the other possibility is she tried to swim back to shore, possibly using the life preserver. the missing life preserver points to this, IMO. the fact that the life preserver has not been found is worrying.

---

looking at this now, with the big reset on the facts, i honestly get the feeling she just got lost, panicked, and acted irrationally, possibly exacerbated by MH issues . someone early on (the mom?) reportedly said they think she just got on the bus going the wrong direction. that may have happened. and then, not thinking clearly, she makes bad decisions that make things worse, then gets more panicked, etc., in a vicious cycle. so sort of a mix of accident with MH crisis.

without the assumption she had some big plan made in advance, i now suspect trying to steal the boat may have just been a desperate attempt to get back to the university of essex or her friend's house. if i'm not mistaken, the university is on the same river as brightlingsea, further up. i suspect she pushed off in the bigger boat before trying to hot-wire, failed at hot-wiring, and then was stuck drifting out of control in an unpowered boat. realizing that won't get her wherever she's trying to go, she grabs a life vest and jumps in the water. maybe the hot-wiring attempts had gone on for a while, otherwise she'd still be close to the shore / pontoon and had a good shot at swimming back (unless there was a strong current, she doesn't know how to swim, or she's seriously out of shape) and hopefully chosen to do so. yet, neither she nor the life preserver has been found. so she swam/drifted somewhere other than brightlingsea marina.

where? one terrifying possibility is she drifted out into the ocean. that ping from the north sea may well have been from the north sea. another is she drifted in the same direction as the boat and wound up in bradwell. another is she swam over to mersee island, which may have been fairly close to the boat's trajectory as it drifted from brightlingsea to bradwell.

whatever the specifics, absent any clear evidence she disappeared intentionally (do we still have any?), the fact that she's been missing this long does not bode well, sadly. if not hypothermia or drowning, she'd be at risk of dehydration by now.

The University of Essex has doctoral training and development courses that appear to be online, so not standard courses (link below). Vitoria was not registered as a doctoral student, so it's doubtful that she could access online content. It's possible that Vitoria's friend - the Brazilian professor at the university - shared her university access with Vitoria.

What did the professor and Vitoria discuss during lunch on March 3?
  • "March 1st, Vitória arrived at the home of Liliane Silva, a Brazilian psychologist and professor at the University of Essex
  • March 3, 12:00 PM and 1:00 PM - Vitória and Liliane had lunch together at a place near the university
  • 1 PM - Vitória boarded bus 87 on Boundary Road
  • 1:30 PM - Vitória got off the bus on Bellfield Avenue, Brightlingsea"

"Vitória has an extensive resume in the field and international experience. The trip to England also aimed to seek study and lecture opportunities, with the possibility of starting a doctorate."

Hi, my wife goes to the Uni and you don’t need an access card to enter the library in general, only specific rooms such as the postgraduate study room. Also, the timeline for PhD applications at Essex varies by department but most of them are due around March/April so it would make sense for her to come for that specifically. However, if that was why she was at the Uni, then there should be correspondence with a potential supervisor. You can’t just turn up to campus to talk to professors about your PhD application

'ANOTHER significant item belonging to missing psychologist Vitória Figueiredo Barreto has been found in Brightlingsea.'

''Vitória’s loved ones have been raising awareness and sharing information on the ‘Find Vitoria Barreto’ Facebook page.

On Mother’s Day, a spokesperson for Vitória’s loved ones confirmed her laptop had been found in Brightlingsea.
“Maybe today will bring more answers,” they said in a statement on the page.
“We wanted to let you know that Vitória’s laptop has now been found in Brightlingsea. It is with the police.
“At this time we do not know exactly where it was found or by whom but we hope that this will enable some helpful information to be retrieved''.

This is a solid theory. I guess my biggest question (if she was lost) is why would she ask to enter a man’s home but not ask to use his phone or find out how to get back to the University of Essex?
