Dear God.

Not only was I in Barcelona last week with three of my college aged children, but two of them went to Shoko, stayed out all night, and one got his wallet stolen.

I was anxious before they went out, I was anxious the next morning, I was FURIOUS with them for breaking every rule I set (stay together, don’t drink too much, come back before your cell phone dies, etc) and THIS IS WHY.

I am quite literally beside myself right now.
Sounds like they have crime rings around who prey on tourists and the popularity of this place imo

Am just joining now. Live in the Chicago area and know someone who lives in Elmhurst and knows Jimmy from when he was little. There are obviously all sorts of threads swirling among neighbors. Supposedly there is a tradition of this bar closing and then everyone rushing to the beach. Also, there are reports of an altercation at the bar/after it closed. The local worries are that he was injured in the fight, injured and pushed into the water, injured and left somewhere. JMO
The bar did not close until 6 a.m. according to their hours listed on the link I posted earlier for the business. That's 3 hours after he was last seen, so this may just be rumor at this point. I hope so.

I feel like the pickpocket incident could be separate from a solo guy getting to intoxicated on whatever then going into the water… it has sadly hapoened over and over again here in various cities with young men in similar age group. Back in the day we always had a pact come together leave together, but i can imagine if environment felt exciting, new, safe, that a young person today could get complacent then have things turn south one way or another pretty quickly. Jmo
Yup, it's so damn important. Go out together, stay together. I've always been one of those wanderers though, so I can see how something like this would happen regardless.

FWIW, my kids said that they felt like the club goers (it was even the same night of the week, just one week earlier) were primarily foreigners (not locals). However, my general assumption is that it was a local who stole my kiddo's wallet. We also talked to another American (Indiana) who was blatantly pickpocketed on the street.

We were only there for a few days before moving on to another country, but there were soooo many kids abroad. I thought they had indicated Shoko closed at 3, so definitely curious to hear that it is open until 6.

ETA - I'm distraught, sorry for the stream of consciousness.

I’m dubious about this whole robbery thing. I can see it happening, but I can’t see him being dumped in the ocean or somethin

This is sad :( I doubt he would've gone this long without reaching out if he was okay. Maybe he got robbed, could've hit his head, they pushed him into the water or something? Or something else sinister? I hope they figure out what happened soon. 😞

I'm checking Spanish news and am not finding any mention of his phone or any robbery.

I can only imagine how you are feeling!! We try so hard to instill the importance of being aware, staying together, not drinking too much but the kids don't think it will happen to them.

I have a bad feeling about this. Reminding me of Natalie Holloway, another young Alabama traveler that went missing from a nightclub, although Natalie was younger.

For a stranger to have his phone is not good.

It’s possible his parents gave the phone number to police, and they were able to ping it and track down the thief.

This would obviously change depending on how fast this occurred. We need more info.
if those two things happened like that, then i somewhat doubt whoever had the phone was directly connected to his disappearance. if there was some foul play, a perp would be next-level stupid to hang on to the victim's phone and not even turn it off.

I'm sure there are, I have seen many videos on Youtube showing people who look for the pickpocketers in touristy areas and then alert the victim before the thief has a chance to grab what they want. Sometimes the person filming follows the thief to try to get a better picture of their face but they always cover up and run way. Usually before the victim even realizes what just happened.

Not saying it was the case in *this* case, but they tend to split up if they are planning to leave and go home with someone else. If he did indeed meet a girl and head out with her, his friends wouldn't have thought much of it, I don't think. As we saw in the Riley Strain case, these college kids separate for a variety of reasons and don't think much of it, unfortunately. I don't know what works to get them to understand they need to implement the buddy system. As a parent of two teen boys, these stories paralyze me. Praying for a good outcome but not optimistic that we'll get one. Hope I'm wrong. JMO

I hope they can find the young American woman that he was reported to have been talking with. This is every loved ones nightmare!

In this article it's mentioned that the Catalan police neither deny nor confirm that they have the phone.
Translated into English with Google Translate:

As for looking for information from Barcelona, perhaps search for Catalan newspapers, rather than Spanish ones, as the city is in Catalonia, and Catalan is the local language.

Thank you, yes am aware of that and did check. Two of my sons live in Barcelona. I also used to. Have asked if they have heard anything local. Will look tomorrow to see if there is anything new.
