9-year-old charged with assault after police say she beat 4-year-old to death with broom

"The Mobile District Attorney's Office confirmed Monday the 9-year-old girl accused of beating her 4-year-old brother has been charged with assault.

Last Thursday Mobile Police responded to Jacob Drive in Mobile after a 4-year-old boy, under the care of 53-year-old Yolanda Coale, was unresponsive in the home. The little boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mobile Police arrested and charged Yolanda Coale with aggravated child abuse.

Court documents now reveal more of the story saying Yolanda woke up to the screaming kids on Thursday only to find the 9-year-old girl beating her 4-year-old brother with a broomstick.

The complaint says the girl “did willfully torture, willfully abuse and cruelly beat” her brother."

This is just horrific.

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A 9-year-old girl is facing a criminal charge in connection with the death of her 4-year-old brother. She is the second person facing charges in the tragic case, alongside the boy’s aunt and caregiver.

Police arrested Yolanda Denise Coale, 53, on an aggravated child abuse charge Thursday night. It was the same day her 4-year-old nephew, of whom she was the legal guardian, was found dead after officers were called around 8 a.m. for a medical emergency involving a child, WALA reports.

Court documents also showed there was long-term abuse and a history of abuse at that location.

But it did not say if Coale played a part in that.

“She was the legal guardian of the child. … During the course of the investigation, Mobile police found evidence of abuse for this child, and then he was found deceased yesterday,” he said after the hearing.

Coale has no local criminal history except for an arrest in 2005 charging her with furnishing alcohol to a minor.

The documents also claim there were past injuries and signs that indicate long-term abuse on the young boy’s body but it’s unclear how he got those injuries.

I think I will just sit back and wait to see what the investigation reveals. Not sure what I think about this one yet. I am on the fence as to who his abuser is or if he had multiple abusers. RIP little guy. :(

I'm with you on that. That child wasn't being protected long term. The question to be answered is how many people in that household participated in the abuse, and how many sat by and did nothing.

A 9 year old girl in a household where a younger child ends up dead is defensless against an adult who pins the murder on her. I'm willing to bet that the girl also suffered assaults at the hands of her aunt. I won't be surprised if it turns out that the 9 year old witnessed her aunt killing her little brother, tried to stop it and got blamed for the murder. MOO

Same here, Knitty and TGI -- It's awful, either way. No excuses, but I wonder if the 9 y/o was also abused, as others here maythink. Also thinking that the aunt may have done it or threatened the 9 y/o that it would happen to her if she didn't beat her brother.
Nine years old. Damm

I hope they do x-rays on the 9 yr old's bones to see if she has healed fractures over the years too.

Whether she actually did what she's accused of or not, she's a victim herself, and I think this is a good idea.

I agree. Even if she did beat him herself, [and I am not yet convinced]-----she had to learn that violent behaviour from someplace. The average 9 yr old girl acts like a big sister to a 4 yr old little brother---a combination of love and protectiveness mixed with some annoyance and bickering. But beating him to death? NO, that is something she had to watch and experience, to learn to do that, in my opinion.

Caretaker, 9-year-old arrested after 4-year-old boy beaten to death with broomstick

A 53-year-old woman and a 9-year-old girl have been arrested in connection with the beating death of the child’s younger brother in Mobile, Alabama.

According to an NBC News report, Yolanda Denise Coale was asleep when she heard screaming, and found the boy, 4, being hit with a broomstick by his older sister. Coale, their aunt, has been identified as the caretaker of the children.

prayers for emotional healing and continuing supportive services for any child that was ever in her care. That poor 9 year old. I cannot imagine. Living in hell and then the final insult to injury being blamed for your toddler brother's murder.

Yolanda Denise Coale had been set to stand trial in December for felony murder in the death of King Lyons. But the 55-year-old Mobile woman accepted an 11th-hour plea bargain, admitting to reckless manslaughter in the death of King Lyons.

Prosecutors presented evidence that both King and his older sister had been beaten with broomsticks and belts, and sometimes locked in a closet. Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood praised the sentence and said prosecutors agreed to the plea bargain in order to spare young children from having to testify.
