MORGAN HILL, Calif. —
The Morgan Hill Police Department has confirmed that a body found near the Anderson Lake County Park area on Wednesday afternoon is the remains of missing Morgan Hill resident, 18-year-old Marissa DiNapoli.

DiNapoli’s body was discovered three and a half miles from where she was last seen alive.

DiNapoli was reported missing on Monday after last communicating with a family member via text message on Saturday at 9:16 p.m. In the message, she mentioned plans to stay with a friend that evening and return home the following day.

However, she failed to do so and did not respond to family members’ calls.

Detectives revealed that she was last seen on Sunday at around 9:45 a.m. with 21-year-old Martin Mendoza.

Investigators say that Mendoza was her ex-boyfriend and that the two were just friends at the time of her disappearance.

An 18-year-old has been found dead just days after she was reported missing in Morgan Hill, California, according to police.

Mendoza was identified as a person of interest during the search for DiNapoli and remains so, according to police. Mendoza was not cooperative in the initial investigation, police said.

"Detectives are actively seeking information on his whereabouts and urge anyone with knowledge to contact their local law enforcement agency immediately. Mendoza is believed to be driving a white Toyota Camry bearing either license plate CW87W00 or 9PTM351," police said in a statement Wednesday.

DiNapoli last communicated with family members via text on Saturday, according to police.

During that exchange, DiNapoli said she was going to stay overnight with a friend, but she didn't come home the next day and hasn't responded to calls from family members.

Police believe she was last seen at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday with Mendoza. The two were allegedly seen leaving a home on Trail Drive, just outside of Morgan Hill, and DiNapoli's car was later found in the same area, according to police.

Mendoza allegedly wasn't cooperative with investigators and is considered a person of interest in DiNapoli's disappearance. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should contact their local law enforcement agency immediately.

DiNapoli was reported missing to the Morgan Hill Police Department on Monday, June 30. According to a statement issued by the department, “Marissa last communicated with family members via text message on June 28 at 9:16pm In that message, she indicated that she planned to stay with a friend for the evening and would return home the following day. When she did not return home or respond to calls from family members, she was reported missing.”

A law enforcement source told NBC Bay Area that it was DiNapoli’s family who made the discovery after days of searching.

On Sunday morning, a surveillance video captured Marissa and 21-year-old Martin Mendoza, whom friends say is her ex-boyfriend, leaving a house together. Audio on the video clip posted to social media has Mendoza asking DiNapoli, “Why would you text your ex?”

According to the Morgan Hill Times, the U.S. Marshals arrested Martin Mendoza at around 2 p.m. in El Centro. He’s considered a person of interest in the death of 18-year-old Marissa DiNapoli.

According to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, Mendoza is “in custody” at the jail, but his charges are not yet listed. An Imperial County sheriff’s deputy told the Times that “he’s the one” when asked if the arrest was in connection with a “murder case.”
