d4vd — who was raised Christian — says he was a bit of a late bloomer. He wasn't allowed to listen to secular music until he was 13. Once he discovered mainstream artists, his "mind" started "going crazy."
"My mom was big on, like, 'You going to be the smartest kid in the world. You're going to be a genius.' I listened to Mozart, listened to Bach, listened to Beethoven," he recalls. Then, in the sixth grade, he secretly downloaded SoundCloud.
"I had to hide it from my parents cause my parents would check my phone every week to make sure I was staying on the right track... I found XXXTentacion, Smokepurpp, Lil Pump, Ski Mask the Slump God, Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi. It was like only eating M&M's your whole life and then figuring out that Skittles exist."
When he started making music, d4vd felt "isolated" and like he wasn't "living the life" — so he would turn to his online friends to tell him about their experiences. "I lived through them and told their stories," he says.
Since then, d4vd has maintained his faith and feels it helps him "navigate" his rising star. His parents are supportive, too.
