"He was in his home, the safest place that you can be — with your family, in bed — when he was struck by a stray bullet," said Det.-Sgt. Jason Davis with the Toronto Police Service.

The boy was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"What's happened here is a cowardly, disgusting act of violence," Davis said.

"Every resource available in the city is being allocated to this right now."
Two other apartment units were struck by gunfire, but there were no further victims, Davis said

There are no suspects or vehicle descriptions at this time, he said.''

''A group of people were standing at a playground near the building at the time of the shooting, Davis said.
He said police are looking to speak with people in that group, if they have not already done so. ''

I remember awhile back reading about a kid dying in a similar circumstance in the U.S. somewhere and being glad 'that kind of crime doesn't happen here' (Canada) and here we are ...

''Speaking on behalf of the family, Marcell Wilson, an anti-gun violence advocate, said Saturday afternoon that Roy’s death is the latest “reminder” that the gun crisis in the city has “gone far too deep.”
“When our children are not safe in their own homes, on their streets, in their own neighbourhoods, in their own beds, we must acknowledge that we have failed them,” he said. “This young boy should have had his whole life ahead of him. We owe it to him and we owe it to every child to do better.”
The child’s mother, Holly Roy, who was surrounded by family and friends, sat weeping near Wilson as he spoke.''

“You’ve not only destroyed a life of a child and devastated his family, you’ve also destroyed your own future,” Wilson said. “Do the right thing before more damage is done.”

just saw an episode of first 48 where a boy was sound asleep in his bed when a drive by took his life, and injured three teens having a sleepover. The bullet travelled through three other rooms to hit him :(

RIP Jahvai, and prayers for his loved ones. This kind of loss is so senseless, arbitrary and unfair.

The horror of the poor mom waking up to her 8 yr. old child bleeding and near death, is almost softened, because the little guy was sleeping next to his mother when the bullet hit. imo.

This city '(Toronto the Good') never used to be like this, what happened?!

''His mother, Holly Roy, has declined to speak with the media so far.
But in a Facebook post Sunday, she said that JahVai went to bed that night excited, as he was getting ready for his best friend’s birthday party.
“He was so excited he couldn’t sleep!” she wrote. The two were in bed together, when they heard two shots. “It took a minute” to realize it wasn’t fireworks, she said.
He sat up, a look of fear on his face. There were another three shots.
“There was nothing I can do but scream and hold his lifeless little body. I cannot get that image out of my head,” she added.
“Remember his name!!! Never forget his name!!”''

I've definitely heard stories about kids in dangerous neighborhoods being put to bed in the bathtub to prevent things like this. RIP, Jahvai.

''Breathing heavily and filled with emotion, the heartbroken mother of JahVai Roy says she is feeling “indescribable” pain after losing her youngest child to gun violence.

JahVai died on Aug. 16 after being struck by a stray bullet in his North York home while in bed next to his mom. The shooter or shooters are still outstanding and police have not released any descriptive details about them at this time.''

Aside from being a free-spirited boy, JahVai was also an anti-violence advocate, his mom said.

Two years ago, he’d been featured in an anti-bullying video created by the One by One Movement in which he urged people to “be nice.”

“(JahVai) was the youngest member of the One by One Movement. They’ve been very supportive of my family. … It’s unfortunate that we’re here now, like, you know, that’s what he wanted to do. He just wanted to bring people together. It shouldn’t have happened to him.”

so they were all youths at the time JahVai was murdered and will not receive an adequate sentence IMO (adequate to me would be life with no chance of parole ever)

'The city’s top cop says the “dramatic rise” in youth violence, which has recently seen kids as young as 12 and 13 charged with attempted murder and murder, is “very alarming.”

“We’ve had 13 young people charged in murder investigations this year in our city,” the Chief said. “That’s very alarming.”

“I think it really speaks to the need for all levels of government and everybody who provides services that impact families and young people to work together, to do everything we can to prevent and intervene in advance of these senseless acts of violence that are hurting our communities and, in this case, took the life of an eight-year-old child,” he added.''
