“Firing 24 shots, two clips, into off-duty police officer David Jewell, assassinating him on the spot,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood told a news conference as he played some of the sickening video.
“In 38 years of policing, as a homicide detective, at the time the fourth-largest city in the country, to watch the evil and the calculating-ness of what he did to Officer Jewell, you cannot describe it.”

-Interviews with the defendant's family members revealed he had been diagnosed with a mental health disorder in the past, and had indicated he was hearing voices. Family members said he was quiet and played a lot of video games. They were not aware of any homicidal threats or anti-law enforcement ideologies on his part. The defendant is a legal resident of the United States who has lived here for 10 years and has a green card.
Machado mentioned he was having a bad day on his way to work and contemplated shooting Jewell when he saw him enter the store.
After Jewell arrived at the store, Machado went to his car, retrieved the weapon, and shot Jewell, reloading to fire a total of 24 rounds.
Machado is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 PM, where further details of the case may emerge.
