Vegan parents accused of starving child to death on diet of fruit and vegetables | US News | Sky News
"..... A couple have been charged with first-degree murder after their 18-month-old son starved to death on a diet of only raw fruit and vegetables.
Ryan Patrick O'Leary, 30, and Sheila O'Leary, 35, were also charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse and two counts of child neglect by a grand jury in Lee County, Florida, on Wednesday.
A police report said their son, who has not been named, weighed only 17 pounds (8kg) when he died..."

Charged with murder in the first degree. Shows that they knew this 'diet' would kill their baby.
Monsters.
It appears that the killers were eating a healthy diet themselves.
And probably ate meat themselves, just not for the children.

State Attorney Amira Fox said the indictment also includes three other children who also suffered from child abuse and extreme neglect. They are 3, 5 and 11 years old.

Vegan parents charged with murder in baby son's starvation death | Daily Mail Online

"...Sheila revealed that the boy was delivered at home and had never seen a doctor, according to the probable cause affidavit..."

Wonder if those children even have social security numbers ?
Were these births ever registered ?

Again with the "parents" concealing their children from the public eye.
Never a good sign.

Sitting on my hands on this one...

I remember, probably 30 yrs ago or so, when a couple thought their son -- maybe 1--2 years old -- was Jesus Christ, and decided he should eat only lettuce and watermelon. This was before I was on WS, but obviously, it stuck in my mind. No physical abuse, just the diet.
Here's the article -- can't believe I found it!

'her youngest child had not eaten anything other than breast milk in the week leading up to his death

the child hadn't eaten ANYTHING for a week!

it's not about a lack of meat and dairy; it's about a balanced diet and well, I mean withholding food is not balanced
the media is choosing to stoke hysteria by sensationalizing their headlines IMO

Yes, I wonder if this was a form of 'punishment' ?
And it sounds like all of the children were malnourished, no dental care, etc.... :(

full disclosure: I'm vegan so I'm biased but this sure seems to go beyond the children's 'diet'

And giving birth at home and not seeing a doctor with them.
I'm all for people being allowed to make their own responsible decisions for their families--- but I'm getting a picture in this case -- of people who were concealing their abusive acts !

Did they have grandparents who were not allowed to visit the children ?
And with the homeschooling they wouldn't have been seen by teachers or anyone else.
Not saying teaching them at home is wrong; but some parents use this to 'hide' their kids.
Dangerous.

Agreed. Children can thrive on a vegetarian diet. But, one that is carefully balanced with high fat foods, like avocados, nuts, olives. And supplemented with essential vitamins, that children are not getting from a vegan diet.

Children are not just "small adults" when it comes to nutrition. They need to create their base for developing bone structure, organ and brain development. They need much more iron, vitamin D, B12, and fat.

That being said, were these people malicious or suffering from a mental illness? I had a student who was emaciated, her Mother was a very thin upper middle class Mom, who I believe had an eating disorder and was putting that on her child. I called CPS, and dared to bring up her child's weight in a meeting with her....she went crazy. Whatever.

Oh, this one has me fuming. These parents weren't just vegans, they were on a raw diet, which eliminates many nutritious sources such as brown rice and veggies that are good for you when cooked such as spinach, squash and pumpkin, carrots and even mushrooms.

Being vegan is a lifestyle choice and if a parent chooses it for their children then they damn well better educate themselves. Kids have way different nutritional needs than adults and if they don't appear to be thriving then something is wrong.

But - veganism doesn't explain the child abuse charges so I'm concluding these were two abusive, uncaring adults who put themselves first. I hope they rot in prison.

Pair starve `Second Christ' baby

These folks were mentioned earlier in the thread, the husband was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The wife, lost custody of her children, and received probation.

It seemed that they were obviously mentally ill, and possibly delusional. But still charged with child abuse.
Christopher Fink accepts a plea Wife Kyndra left alone to battle charges against her
Commissioner approves Finks' divorce Neither parent has rights to 2 sons, so custody isn't issue

And there were the Turpins, who starved their children.

Is this mental illness or deliberate behavior?

These adults have bright eyes & healthy skin & hair, and a normal body weight:

As stated above, maintaining a body is different than building a body.

So sad, and the other kids may have missed important nutrients as they grew.

So sad!

JMHO YMMV

Now, the mother is facing a life sentence with no chance of getting out of prison.

Her sentencing is scheduled for July 25.

Ryan O'Leary is expected to go to trial later this year.
Thanks for the update @JerseyGirl! Grr, this case still burns my tuches  I'm so glad mom got a conviction on first-degree murder; IMO there's no rational explanation for her behavior other than it was deliberate and malicious.

From the article:
Their 18-month-old son died of malnutrition and dehydration that same year.

Intentionally withholding liquids, particularly water, from an innocent 18-month old baby. I hope she never gets out.
