"An outstanding fine against the main suspect in the 2007 disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann in Portugal has been paid off, German prosecutors said Monday. It means he could be released from prison in a separate case in mid-September instead of January 2026.

Der Spiegel reported that a former employee of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office paid the fine, but she had told the magazine she had tried to rescind the payment when she found out what it was really for."

5/7/25 Update: Brueckner's release could be delayed after he was charged with offences against prison staff at the German jail where he is serving time for a rape sentence. Brueckner has been ordered to appear before judges in the German city of Oldenburg on 10/27/25 on charges of verbally abusing prison guards. The case comes just weeks after he was convicted of similar charges committed at another jail as prosecutors desperately continue to fight to keep him behind bars. In this case with the prison staff in Oldenburg. He's just accused of calling a member of the prison staff some names. Sources claim there are a string of other “minor” charges being lined up against the German to stop him being freed.

Germany/Portugal - *Charged (Oct. 11, 2022) & arrest warrant reinstated 11/18/22 - an elderly woman 70-80 yrs old (unknown victim) a Tour Rep (tied up & raped the victim in her holiday apt. He then hit the victim several times with a whip. The accused is said to have recorded the entire event with a video camera). Took place around the same time (between Dec. 28, 2000 to April 8, 2006) on the Praia de Luz, Algarve coast, Portugal.
Germany/Portugal – *Charged (Oct. 11, 2022) & arrest warrant reinstated 11/18/22 - 10 year old German girl (Joana E.) (wearing only shoes & otherwise naked. He grabbed the child's wrist & began to perform masturbation movements on his naked penis). On Salema (Zalema) beach, near Praia de Luz, Portugal, April 7, 2007).
Germany/Portugal – *Charged (Oct. 11, 2022) & arrest warrant reinstated 11/18/22 – Ines VP (11 year old Portuguese girl) (pulled down his trousers & underpants & made masturbation movements on his naked penis in order to sexually arouse himself, until the frightened girl ran to her father for help. The suspect was arrested on the spot by the Portuguese police). Exposed himself in playpark, São Bartolomeu de Messines, June 11, 2017).
Trial began on February 16, 2024. (And continued on Feb. 23rd, Mar. 1st & 14th, Apr. 2nd, 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th, 24th & 26th, May 2nd, 15th, 166th, 17th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 28th, 29th & June 4th & 5th & 28th, July 5th, August 5th, 15th, Sept. 5th & 6th, 25th, 26th. 27th, Oct. 7th).
Next Trial date: October 8, 2024. Prosecutors rested case on Oct. 2nd & Defense rested on Oct. 7th. Verdict to be read on Oct. 8, 2024.
Brückner was acquitted [found not guilty] by the District Court in Braunschweig, northern Germany, of three charges of aggravated rape & two of sexual abuse of children in Portugal between 2000 & 2017.
Presiding Judge Dr. Engemann. Lead Prosecutor Ute Lindermann. Defense attorneys Dr. Friedrich Fülscher, Philipp Marquort, Dennis Bock & Atilla Aykac.
Brueckner is currently serving a 7 year sentence for the 2005 rape on a pensioner; was sentenced in 2019. Probably released in September, 2025. 5/15/25 Update: Found guilty of abuse prison staff & won’t be released until February, 2026.

January 20, 2025 Update: Hans Christian Wolters confirmed that he had received the written judgement that found the German paedophile innocent of five sex crimes in October. He said he had received the detailed 263 page report on Thursday [Jan. 17, 2025]. “We now have one month to justify the appeal we have filed,” he explained. “The proceedings are therefore expected to arrive at the Federal Court of Justice in Leipzig in March 2025.” “We hope that the Federal Court will decide before the end of the detention,” continued Wolters. “Should it follow our legal view we could apply for a new arrest warrant for the accused acts, so that the defendant would remain in custody beyond September.” He is currently serving the final year of a seven-year sentence for the violent, sadistic rape of American pensioner Diana Menkes, in Praia da Luz, in Portugal, in 2005.
March 24 2025 Update: German prosecutors currently have “no plans” to charge Brueckner they suspect was involved in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann despite his potential release from prison. Brueckner’s original sentence is due to end in September, but Braunschweig Chief Public Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters confirmed to The Independent that Brueckner had filed a motion for early release. Mr. Wolters said the Hildesheim Regional Court was yet to decide on that motion & there was no date for a hearing yet. “There are currently no plans to file charges in the Maddie case,” Mr Wolters added. “We are currently awaiting the decision of the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe regarding the cases heard last year. However, that will certainly take a few more months.”
March 29, 2025 Update: Brueckner, whose sentence for a separate rape is due to end in September, has applied for early release & reportedly could now walk free in the next two weeks. Reacting to the bombshell news, Hazel Behan, who accused Brueckner of rape in a high-profile trial last year, exclusively told us of her shock: “One thing I can say, is I believe him to be a very dangerous person who poses a threat to women and children. German prosecutors named Brueckner as the sole suspect in the murder of missing girl Madeleine in 2020 – but have yet to charge him with any offence related to that. This week Braunschweig Chief Public Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters confirmed Brueckner had filed a motion for early release – but denied reports there were plans to try and charge him over the suspected murder of Madeleine before he could walk free. “There are currently no plans to file charges in the Maddie case,” Mr Wolters told the UK’s Independent. We are currently awaiting the decision of the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe regarding the cases heard last year. “However, that will certainly take a few more months.” It means if Brueckner is successful in his ask for early release, he could be freed within days – and disappear.
May 2, 2025 Update: Prosecutors appeal was submitted in April no verdict is expected until the summer, at a guess July at the latest the courts shut in August.
May 7, 2025 Update: Brueckner is due in court in Germany next week accused of offences against prison guards behind bars, The Mirror can reveal. If convicted of the charges, the convicted paedophile faces having his hopes of being released from jail in September scuppered. Brueckner, who is serving a seven-year term for rape, is listed to appear before magistrates in Lehrte, Germany, next Thursday. Lehrte District Court confirmed Brueckner is listed to appear in court on 5/15/25. Sources say he is accused of aggressive behaviour & “verbal assaults” towards prison staff. Prosecutors in Hildesheim say Brueckner committed the offences at Sehnde Prison, near Hannover. He is also accused of similar crimes at another jail in northern Germany, where he began his rape sentence. Brueckner will stand trial on those matters in Oldenburg in July,
May 15, 2025 Update: In Lehrte charge: He was sentenced to probation & told to pay court costs. Prosecutors had been hoping Brueckner would be given a new prison term for the jail outburst. The earliest date he can be released from Sehnde prison is September, but his lawyer said a more realistic date, due to his inability to pay fines he still owes, is February next year.
