A sentencing hearing was held in November, and in December, McDonald-Burkman ruled that New would spend the rest of his life in prison because she believed it was a harsher penalty than death.
This references sentencing in 2010.

Rosalina Cano was not at peace with the judge's decision, saying this week that she still feels that New should have been sentenced to death.

Good article. It is 3 pages long. The break in the case came when LE found what looked like the hair from a child in New's apartment.

They must have been going through that apartment on their hands and knees to find that, thank you detectives.

Playground dedicated in honor of 5-year-old boy killed by sex offender

Rosalina Cano released a clutch of nine balloons and listened as those around her sang happy birthday to her son, Cesar “Ivan” Aguilar-Cano, who would have turned nine yesterday had he never crossed paths with Cecil New II.

Children climbed on a new set of monkey bars behind her, in a small playground dedicated to Ivan's memory.
