Marilyn J. Roberts

Case Classification: Endangered Missing
Missing Since: March 31, 1988 - April 01, 1988
Location Last Seen: New Bedford, Bristol County, Massachusetts
Description:
Roberts was last heard from in April 1988 while she was in the New Bedford, Massachusetts area. Her family originally believed she had moved to the West Coast to live with a relative, but they later learned she had not been in touch with any of her relatives. Her father, a retired New Bedford police officer, reported her missing in June 1988.
Roberts was then sighted in New Bedford in June, and her family thought she was safe. They reported her missing a second time in December 1988 after they heard about a possible serial murderer in the area.
The remains of several women all in their twenties and thirties, which had involvement with substance abuse and prostitution, were discovered in the late 1980's along or near highway ramps in the New Bedford area. This included Interstate 195, Route 140, and Route 88 in Freetown, Marion, Westport, and Dartmouth. The first body was found July 3, 1988; the last was found April 24, 1989. Investigators believe they were murdered by a serial killer.
Roberts fits the victimology profile as well as Christina Monteiro, who also disappeared from New Bedford in July 1988. The murders, and Roberts' and Monteiro's disappearances, remain unsolved.
