Man locks himself in airplane cockpit

Baton Rouge police officers have surrounded a plane at the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport because a man has locked himself in the cockpit.

According to a witness, an American Eagle flight landed at the airport just before 12:30 p.m.

That witness said he was one of the last people to exit the plane after a flight from Houston landed.

The witness added another man who was not on the flight appeared to push through other passengers, run down the jetway and get on that plane.

An unarmed man who threatened to kill himself Wednesday morning has locked himself into the cockpit of a vacant American Airlines plane at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport, authorities said.

The man locked in the cockpit threatened to kill himself Wednesday morning, McKneely said.

Police got a report that the man near the scene of an accident that closed a portion of Interstate 10 wanted to die by having police shoot him, McKneely said. Officers monitoring the accident armed themselves with shotguns.

Investigators reported Metro Airport police and the Baton Rouge Police Department tried to negotiate with the man, but he refused.

Power and oxygen were cut externally and the man surrendered to police just before 3 p.m.

Thank God he surrendered. How upsetting for everyone! It will be interesting to see how he managed to get on the plane in the first place...
