I thought he'd be a local. Shooters stopped travelling far. My guess: drugs, alcohol, computer games, loneliness, some mental illness and to add, unbelievable boredom on a Sunday morning is what we'll hear. These destructors break the canvas of our life as we used to know it.

Authorities have found a suspicious item on the church property that they believe could be an improvised device, a source familiar with the incident told CNN.

The source added that the bomb squad was assessing the item.

One of the victims was a young girl who was shot in the back, according to Matson.

Matson reported that she spoke to someone from South America who recently arrived in the United States and attended a church service on Sunday with his mother.

According to Matson, the person managed to get out of the burning church but his mother remained in the building after the fire started.

While NO violence makes any sense, attacking any house of worship will NOT deter people of faith from practicing their faith. All it shows is how deranged and weak-minded the perp is. my opinion

IMO, it does deter a denomination or particular church from gaining as many new members. The US has fewer people actively attending churches than it did 30 years ago, and it's still declining. Latter Day Saints have stayed a bit ahead of this trend (larger families, but also active recruitment - often through marriage or dating relationships - is a big factor).
