    CHILD QUEST International has
joined in the search for Norman Basil
Pappas, 20-year-old resident of the greater
*Carmel area who has been listed as miss¬
ing since late July, Carmel Police Depart¬
    ment said Wednesday.

Despite the added help, Detective Sgt.
Warren (Pete) Poitras said, the man has
    not been located.

“Yes,” said Poitras, “that network took
the case. It distributes missing person
    brochures all over the place.”

Pappas 1 mother dropped him off at the
Naval Postgraduate School, where he had
a parttime job, on July 26. That was the
    last time she saw him.

“A friend observed him in the area of
the Monterey bus station at 11 a.m. the
same day,” Poitras said, “but did not

speak with him. Basil hasn't been heard
    from since.”

Originally, it was thought that he may
have traveled to San Francisco. Acting on
information supplied by his mother about
where else Pappas might have gone,
    Carmel Police Department has covered
South Lake Tahoe and Joshua Tree Na¬
    tional Park with bulletins.

Very confusing case.

From what I've found, the Monterey bus stop is just a half an hour walk from the school. So assuming Norman's mom dropped him off for work around 9 a.m., maybe he asked to be sent him home around 9:30, arrived at the bus station around 10:00 a.m., and then maybe the bus (or the ride?) he was waiting for didn't leave till after 11 a.m., which is why his friend saw him there around that time.

But from there, what was his goal? Traveling to San Francisco makes sense because SF is two hours away from Monterey, so maybe he thought he could quickly sneak away and be back in time for his mom to pick him up after work.

But the other locations—South Lake Tahoe and Joshua Tree—are way too far for a quick day trip. So unless he was planning to run away, I don't understand why he might've chosen these locations.

It should've been easy enough to find out where the buses that day after 11am were headed. Then to show his picture to every driver. This is assuming his friend actually saw him there. I'd start with whether he was actually seen at work independently of his mother dropping him off. Then check out the friend.

I was reading and his dad thinks he's dead... that he committed suicide... apparently he was seen at school as a freak... with few social skills... maybe some woman who rejected him or several... or some threat...

Oh yeah I found the comments you're referring to, on the Charley Project Blog. Classmates and even a distant cousin of his have all shared their experiences and thoughts about Norman.

Sadly, if the cousin is right and Norman took his own life, then the theory that he went to San Francisco takes on new meaning. "Over the last 20 years, on average, there have been 30 confirmed suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge every year," according to the bridge's website.

And from what I've read elsewhere, witnesses often don't notice suicides on the bridge because of fog, little traffic at certain hours, or the fact that the action is so quick that it's easy to miss.

I understand what you're saying... sometimes desperation makes one do anything... here in Chile there's a tall building, one of the tallest in South America and it's a shopping center... from there many have jumped in plain sight and patience of everyone... at least they've stopped now because they put up barriers and guards 24 hours a day... but the San Francisco Bridge is enormous and very high... it also occurs to me that it could have been bullying because of his Greek origin... his last name is from that country
