Police were called to a home on Unicomb Close in Maitland just before 5am on August 18 following reports of an incident.
Paramedics treated a woman in her 20s for severe injuries, but despite their efforts, she could not be revived and died at the scene.
A 30-year-old man, believed to be known to the woman, was arrested at the property and taken to Maitland Police Station, where he was assisting detectives with inquiries on Monday.
Several police vehicles attended the cul-de-sac in response to the suspected assault and death, and forensic officers later examined the scene.
Local resident Mel Baker said she had not heard anything unusual overnight but was devastated by the news.
“Upset, shocked, disgusted,” she said, holding back tears.
“You never think something like this will happen in your own neighbourhood. It’s just dreadful … it shouldn’t be happening at all.”
