NV - 12-year old girl stabs father to death - North Las Vegas, December 29, 2024

The obvious reason is they don't want to be there, but the unobvious reason is... Why don't they?

We don't know if she ran away because she had a "good" reason or if she ran away because her father tried to set some rules, limits, maybe took her phone, maybe was doing what he thought would keep her safe and help her mentally, and she was not going to have that.

I have two daughters. When they reached twelve I wondered where my sweet, loving daughter was. It was like they had been switched out to an enraged, temper tantrum stranger.

Our oldest daughter is 16 and still not grown out of it, she would pick up knives if the second daughter even dared walk into the kitchen when she was there. Wouldn't date show any aggression towards me or dad though. She was such a hilarious kid, it's absolutely awful just getting wee glimpses of that past person. Can't wait for the twins to grow up :D

"In Nevada children charged with serious offenses must be able to understand the nature of the allegations and aid defense counsel," Chagoya said in a statement to USA TODAY Tuesday night. "Based on our conversations and investigation we have concerns that our client meets those requirements at this time, which are based on more than just the fact she is a 12-year-old girl facing the full weight of the criminal justice system."

There is a fundraiser to cover the funeral costs, and it mentions he was sick with stage four cancer.
Sadly the family posted that the coroner said he had a brain tumor as well and had approx 2 months to live. Very sad ordeal.

I can't think of many things worse than a daughter stabbing her cancer-stricken father to death. She has murdered her father and in doing so, ruined her life. For someone so young to do this, there must be serious emotional and character defects at play here. Just horrible, IMO.

So, the brain tumor was NOT known to the family, prior to the homicide?

Not from what I can make of it, its posted on the fundraiser that the coroner told family after autopsy. IMO

So did the victim even know he had a brain tumor?? I note that depending on where the tumor was located, a tumor can cause drastic personality changes in a person and behavioral changes.
----------------------------------
Yes, they can. Brain tumors often cause personality changes and sudden mood swings. Although these mood changes and their severity will vary from one person to another, it’s relatively common for someone with a brain tumor to experience increased:

Aggression
Anxiety
Apathy
Confusion
Depression
Forgetfulness
Irritability
Oftentimes, someone with a brain tumor will have difficulty relating to other people. For example, brain tumor patients may have trouble identifying emotions in other people (as well as in themselves). Individuals with a brain tumor may also start behaving in a way that’s socially or culturally inappropriate, as if they’ve lost their inhibitions or sense of restraint.

did the victim experience any of the above and not even know why? If so could that have played a factor in the household dynamic for the worse?

I know some think this 12 year old simply got mad because teenager and rules, but is it possible there was more going on here and this case is not so cut and dried? I've had the ick for reasons I cannot articulate since this case broke and have been riding the fence on how this girl should be prosecuted and if there are mitigators. I think there might be more to this than a spoiled entitled teen lashing out.

12. 12 years old. :(

During the investigation, detectives learned of previous NLVPD responses to the apartment earlier in December for reports of a runaway minor and domestic disturbance.
12-year-old charged with murder for killing father in North Las Vegas

On Friday around 9:30 p.m., officers from the North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD) responded to an apartment on the 3400 block of Mercury Street, near Gowan Road and Civic Center Drive.

the first article I linked states the girl is the one who initiated the call to police. I am going to withhold opining on this case until we learn more. I am curious as to what was going on in that house and the family dynamic. Due to the previous calls it is clear there was some strife going on and I'd rather have more info on events leading up to this one before I

having located the funding site you are referring to, it says he battled cancer for four years prior to his death. So did his family not know that or did his family not know specifically about the brain tumor?

That's my curiosity as to what was going on in the home to drive a 12 year old kid to runaway and kill a parent.

Moo...that is a heavy burden for a child. To be only person in house with person with stage 4 cancer. Was she being his care giver? What physical and mental state was he in?...moo

If you scroll down after the main paragraph there is another post from the same family member saying the coroner told her after autopsy.

Yes, I saw that but my question is, the main paragraph says he battled cancer for four years but then the one you refer to says they just found out about the brain tumor. So I guess he knew he had cancer, was going through treatment, his family was probably aware of that, and then on autopsy the brain tumor was discovered. Assuming that means wherever his cancer was that he was battling spread to his brain which the family was unaware of. I wonder if the victim was even aware the cancer had spread?

Yes, That's how I read it. They knew he had cancer just didn't know about the brain tumor. Sorry for any confusion.

Any news on this case? Since she was 12 when it happened, I'm guessing it's going through Juvenile Court with sealed records.

I hadn't seen this at all until now. I hope proper justice is done.

It sounds like a worst case scenario - a preteen going through the changes of puberty with only her father for guidance, who was himself ill and unaware he was suffering from a tumour that often causes erratic behaviour.
