Inspired by the social media frenzy surrounding Mangione, the prime suspect in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, “Luigi the Musical” is set to open on June 13, at the Taylor Street Theatre — and all five scheduled performances have already sold out.

Developed by Nova Bradford, Arielle Johnson, André Margatini and Caleb Zeringue, the satirical stage production at the former Exit on Taylor will feature Mangione and a fictional rag-tag group of prison mates: rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was charged with sex trafficking and racketeering last year, and fallen FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried.

“These three people represent these big pillars of institutions in society that are failing in their trust: health care, Hollywood and then Big Tech,” Zeringue, who produces and co-writes the show in addition to playing a guard, told the Chronicle.

11:05 - No sign of Luigi yet, but the defense team (just them; prosecutors are still at their table) just went into the back. Not sure what that's all about.

Defense team is back. Waiting on Luigi now.

Luigi is out. No cuffs on his hands — can’t see his feet. Beige prison garb from the MDC.

“Sorry to keep everyone waiting, we’ll explain why in a moment,” says Judge Garnett.

Garnett says she spoke to the defense in private just now because, while the public has a right to hear criminal proceedings, "that right is not limitless.

"Said that their conversation, and a March 22 letter about this, will remain sealed for now.

The chambers conversation and the March 22 letter, Garnett says, concerned specifics about Mangione's defense strategy, hence the sealing.

Garnett asks Luigi if he knowingly and voluntarily waived his right to be present at that chambers conversation just now.

"Yes."

She follows up:

"You understood your right and you waived it?"

"That's right."

Now to the delay request. Garnett asks KFA how long she expects the state trial to take.

"Six weeks is probably what I would guess."

Prosecutor Dominic Gentile pans Marc Agnifilo for taking on "an individual" in state court (Harvey Weinstein).

He says the defense is using the time conflicts of his new client in Weinstein to push for a delay in this case.

Gentile: "Defense counsel should not be able to use that and rely on it, on self related conflicts, to adjourn this trial. One that is actually ready to go. We have provided voluminous discovery. They've had that discovery for the last year."

KFA responds: "I just wanna also put on the record, we try lots of cases. We always have one trial after another… the other matter that he's talking about that has literally nothing to do with this request. That trial is starting in two weeks."

Judge Garnett says she is "skeptical of moving the trial wholesale into 2027 when the state trial has not been adjourned.""I think it’s a little bit of the tail wagging the dog; I don't have any control over the state schedule."

@Uebey

Garnett is rejigging the jury selection schedule slightly. She wants trial to start on either Oct. 26 or Nov. 2.

It's a minor delay -- the trial was initially supposed to start on Oct. 13. It's a far cry from the 2027 date the defense was seeking, though.

Judge Garnett: "It is inevitable that in order for me to ensure that Mr. Mangione receives a fair trial, which must be my paramount concern, that some things are out of our control."

"That is the situation we are in because of the nature of these dueling prosecutions."

The schedule is subject to change based on the events of the state case, Garnett adds.

She sets the next conference for June 5 at 11am to talk jury questionnaires.

Court adjourned.
