Symphonee Simone Smith, 29, of Akron, was found dead in a burning SUV on the train tracks at Bank Street, along an industrial stretch of Akron's Middlebury neighborhood.
Detectives believe her death is a murder. As they continue to look for answers, here's what we know so far:
Akron fire responded to a report of a burning SUV on the train tracks at about 2 a.m. March 17, 2020. Smith's body was found after the fire was extinguished.
The detectives said the SUV set aflame that morning was Smith’s. They haven’t determined if someone else drove it to the tracks or if she went there to meet someone else.
They confirmed that the fire was arson and believe it was done to destroy evidence. The detectives said Smith was likely already killed before the fire. They won’t have an exact cause of death until more details can be uncovered.
Looney said they know some of the events leading up to Smith’s death. They’ve determined where she was and identified some people of interest she met with beforehand.
Police released video from a Circle K gas station in the 900 block South Arlington Street. A few hours before the burning SUV was found, the video shows a person filling up a gas can.
Looney said they believe it's tied to Smith’s killing.
