FBI agent: Dylann Roof reached out to other white supremacists before church shooting

"...Special Agent Joseph Hamski told a federal jury that he found postings and private messages from a computer in Roof's Eastover home to Stormfront.org, a popular white supremacist web site. The postings were made from an account called "LilAryan," registered to Roof's email address.

Roof initially posted on the website in February 2015 to praise "Skinheads USA: Soldiers of the Race War," a 1993 HBO documentary about white supremacists in Alabama, Hamski said. He then sent seven private messages on the website, including some to Stormfront members in the Columbia area seeking to get together. He offered his age, race and email address, he said.

It was not immediately clear from Hamski's testimony whether any of those proposed meet-ups took place...

If he stays the course, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel said closing arguments would be held Tuesday morning. Then, the case would go to the jury..."

At Dylann Roof trial, a grieving brother speaks: ‘My heart ... is broken’

"CHARLESTON
In a powerful juxtaposition Friday, federal prosecutors in the Dylann Roof sentencing trial flashed the killer’s birth certificate on video screens throughout the courtroom. It was followed by the death notices of his nine victims, each gunned down during a June 2015 prayer service at Emanuel AME Zion Church.

Cynthia Hurd’s government form appeared third on the screen, with the standard information about name, age and address.

Her brother took it from there.

For more than 45 minutes on the witness stand, Malcolm Graham filled in the important details about his big sister, whose death he’s still grieving.

“My heart ... is broken,” Graham said, pausing to gather his emotions as he answered a prosecutor’s question about what Hurd’s murder had meant. “My friend. My counselor. My mother. My life coach.

“When I found out about her passing, I was totally lost ... There’s something missing. I can’t go the store to replace it. I can’t reinvent it.”..."

The "Don Black" that is on the gov't witness list is the founder/owner of Stormfront. Just this year, the Washington Post published a great piece on Black's son, Derek Black, who renounced his racist worldview and cut himself off from the "white pride" movement that his parents still belong to. Derek Black was the presumptive heir to the throne of the movement but began questioning his own beliefs during his time in college.

I will always wonder if this massacre would have happened if Roof had gone to college, had a better quality circle of friends, had traveled internationally, etc. or if a crime of this nature and magnitude was the inevitable with Roof.

There are tearjerkers, intellectual foreign films, and a nod to an appreciation of skilled cinematography on Roof's favorite films list. Some of these films are so human, so poignant. What in the hell went wrong and when did it go wrong with DR? How could he love The Notebook for example and yet be as cold and unfeeling as he clearly is? It is possible he can recognize and even appreciate depictions of empathy yet still possess none of his own?

(This can't be stated enough but YESorNO, I so appreciate your all your efforts in this case. Thanks again for all the hard work!)

I do believe that some can be born without compassion for others. We have seen cases in the past where the history of the murderer showed at a very young age they were not like other kids their age. They were already hurting children who were young like they were or showed uncontrollable rage at a very young age. At the age of 8 Joseph Duncan was already raping little five year old boys. Although I do believe his mother was an enabler though and his environment allowed his psychopathic traits to grow stronger and stronger. The mental health doctors diagnosed him as untreatable at a very early age.

I also read an article last year about a 9 year old that was already a psychopath even though legally he couldn't be labeled as such until the age of 18.

I certainly believe Roof is a full blown psychopath and they do not have the ability to have emotions/compassion or true feelings for anyone but themselves. Being a psychopath is not considered a mental illness by judicial standards so it wouldn't be a viable defense. He certainly knew what he did was wrong and that is why he fled. Again the psychopath only cares about themselves. They use others as mere tools to gain their own goals even their close family members.

Roof is cold to the bone with no remorse whatsoever and will never feel any remorse. He cant fake what he doesn't feel although some do try to mimic normalcy but only if it gives them an advantage in someway. Even when they try to fake normalcy it comes across as odd and flat with no emotions that other human beings possess.

In DR we are really looking into the face of pure evil who is devoid of all human compassion and kindness. He will continue to believe murdering these totally innocent people was justified. He is like Jodi Arias another psychopath, among so many others, who will always believe Travis deserved what he got. They are really a very frightening kind of murderer and extremely dangerous. They don't break a sweat when carrying out the most heinous acts imaginable. They see it simply as a mission they are going to carryout and complete.

The only good thing about this is he will be given the death penalty for what he has done even if some of the victims family members wants him spared. His crime is just too heinous filled with hateful racism for him to be spared. The jury will listen intently to what the victims families have said but in the end they will weigh his sentence based on all that he did to those who were loving, accepting, and kind to him. By giving him the death penalty they will be sending a strong message to the community and country that murders committed by hate filled racists will not be tolerated and when they do happen the defendant will be given the harshest punishment allowed by law and in SC the DP is the harshest punishment that can be handed down.

Its too bad that so many appeals slow the execution date down. This man has no redeeming value or a reason to be spared. IMO

You are right, Zen, we will never fully understand this kind of evil that murderers and mass murderers do. All I know at the root of it all it seems they are filled with evil and in this case DR was possessed with racial hatred and an obsession to kill those who he didn't even know who were totally innocent wonderful Christian human beings. He knew he would make an infamous name for himself by targeting the most loving and kind AAs in Charleston. I know I will never fully understand evil nor will I ever understand how anyone could have racial hatred in their heart for anyone.

OT: Albany, Georgia and surrounding area counties including ours in southwest Georgia sustained massage damage from 89MPH straight line winds and tornadoes on Monday night-early Tuesday morning, In the south there are many AAs living here along with many whites and other races. It has been so heartwarming but not surprising to see all races working side by side to help those who have no power, heat or have massive trees down in their yards or trees which have fallen on many homes. All races have come together to give much needed hugs and comfort during this trying time. That has always been the relationship all of us here have with each other so DR doing something this horrific to these beautiful people is so foreign to me. All of us pleasantly interact with each other on a daily basis and this is the way its been for as long as I can remember. [emoji813]
Great post. So well stated.

I think I read the same article you're talking about and it was the most disturbing thing I've ever read in my life!! The article I read described a child so incredibly malevolent and manipulative that using the term "disturbing" is actually a gross understatement.

ETA - this is the article I'm referring to: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/magazine/can-you-call-a-9-year-old-a-psychopath.html

"By the time he turned 5, Michael had developed an uncanny ability to switch from full-blown anger to moments of pure rationality or calculated charm — a facility that Anne describes as deeply unsettling. “You never know when you’re going to see a proper emotion,” she said. She recalled one argument, over a homework assignment, when Michael shrieked and wept as she tried to reason with him. “I said: ‘Michael, remember the brainstorming we did yesterday? All you have to do is take your thoughts from that and turn them into sentences, and you’re done!’ He’s still screaming bloody murder, so I say, ‘Michael, I thought we brainstormed so we could avoid all this drama today.’ He stopped dead, in the middle of the screaming, turned to me and said in this flat, adult voice, ‘Well, you didn’t think that through very clearly then, did you?’"

BBM. Man, you weren't kidding were you? That article is so disturbing on so many levels. I read through the comments and while I agree with the frequent assessment that Michael is a physical and emotional danger to his siblings and that something has to be done about this aspect, I didn't come across one actual serious-minded proposed solution to this dilemma. For example, does he even qualify to be institutionalized? And if so, is that even recommended at his young age? If not, is there just cause in this situation for the Department of Children and Families to remove the siblings? What would be the long-term consequences for the family of such an extreme decision? So many complicated questions here. I can't begin to imagine what it's like to be in Michael's parents' shoes for even one day.

Wonder at what age DR began to present signs of sociopathic/psychopathic tendencies...

At Dylann Roof’s Trial, a Question of How Many Tears Are Too Many

"...Impact statements at capital trials — and the legal questions surrounding them — rose to prominence in the 1980s as victims’ rights advocates won public support, including the passage of a law that altered the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure. But in 1987, the United States Supreme Court ruled that such evidence in capital cases was a “constitutionally unacceptable risk.”

Four years later, it reversed that position when it ruled in Payne v. Tennessee. “Victim impact evidence is simply another form or method of informing the sentencing authority about the specific harm caused by the crime in question,” Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist wrote for the 6-to-3 majority...

Mr. Roof’s choice to not call witnesses means that jurors will “not hear that evidence which tends to dampen the emotional effect” of grieving relatives, said Scott E. Sundby, a law professor at the University of Miami who has studied juror behavior in capital cases.

Victim impact witnesses cannot, by law, opine about the penalty they prefer..."
