6 ½ years after girl's killing, Michigan town thirsts for justice
Case still cold 6 years after girl found strangled in cemetery

Constantine— For nearly seven years the strangulation death of an 11-year-old girl has hovered over this farm town in southwest Michigan.

Finally, last month, investigators announced a break in the case: the arrest of a former police reserve.

But Ray McCann wasn’t charged with the 2007 murder, only with lying about his search for Jodi Parrack, who was missing for several hours before her body was found in a cemetery near her home.

The charge deflated residents, who had hoped the community’s first murder in 30 years finally would be solved.

In a small town where everyone knows everyone, surely somebody knows something, said residents.

“With all the time they (police) spent on it, they never found anything out,” said Jean Barberis, a retired factory worker.

Police said they have found out plenty, just not enough to charge anyone with murder...

Ray the POI was LE. He could have planned the abduction and murder leaving someone else's DNA on Jodi. Or it was innocent DNA from a young school friend they haven't tested.

Has he bonded out? When was his next hearing?

A preliminary examination for a former Constantine reserve police officer charged with lying in testimony he gave to prosecutors investigating the 2007 death of 11-year-old Jodi Parrack was postponed last week for a second time.

The attorney for defendant Raymond McCann II requested postponement and the matter has been rescheduled for July 9 before District Judge Robert Pattison.

McCann has been in the St. Joseph County Jail since his arraignment on the perjury charge April 19. He is being held on a $225,000 bond.

McCann, 46, was ordered by St. Joseph County District Court Judge Robert Pattison to stand trial on five counts of perjury related to statements he made when testifying under oath about his actions on Nov. 8, 2007 when Jodi was found dead in a Constantine cemetery...

While Gilson, whose given name is Valerie and last name was formerly Carver, said McCann facing trial for perjury is "a step in the right direction," the mother said she won't be satisfied until he faces trial for her daughter's death... "It's not about her murder yet, but hopefully this will lead to that," the grieving mother said.

Harrington called four witnesses, including Gilson, during the nearly 3.5 hours hearing to establish that McCann's statements concerning his actions the night of Jodi's death vary significantly from the accounts of others.

A Kalamazoo attorney defending Raymond McCann Jr. on charges that McCann lied to police during investigation of the 2007 murder of Jodi Parrack now predicts the case will not go to trial until November...

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office is adding more instances of alleged false statements by McCann, a former Constantine Police Department reserve officer, made during several interview sessions with authorities.

However, sources say McCann is not a DNA match with a sample retrieved from the body of Parrack when she was found dead on Nov. 8, 2007, in Constantine Township Cemetery... Despite running hundreds of DNA tests, Michigan State Police cold case investigators have not found a match to DNA recovered from the girl’s body.

A Constantine man accused of lying to investigators about the 2007 slaying of 11-year-old Jodi Parrack has pleaded no contest to perjury, prosecutors said...

As part of a plea agreement, four counts of perjury will be dismissed when McCann is sentenced March 20 by Circuit Judge Paul E. Stutesman.

McDonough said preliminary sentencing guidelines call for McCann to serve a minimum sentence of at least one year in jail and, at most, 20 months in prison.

Sorry to quote my own post, but please note it was reported in May of last year that one DNA batch remained to be tested. And today I see this:

http://www.threeriversnews.com/articles/2015/02/13/news/local_news/doc54de06e3658fb789184312.txt

MSP Detective 1st/Lt. Chuck Christensen of the Fifth District Headquarters reported Thursday that one batch is still in process, with as yet unknown results. A match would break open the case that has, to date, stymied efforts to identify a suspect in Jodi’s homicide.

Still? Really?

Circuit Court judge Paul Stutesman sentenced Raymond McCann to spend between 20 months to 20 years behind bars for perjury on Friday.

McCann has already spent 336 days behind bars, so the judge says that will count toward the 20 month minimum sentence. At that point the Michigan Department of Corrections will determine if McCann will be paroled.

There is such a wide range of possible prison time for the perjury charge - from less than 2 years all the way up to 20 years? McCann has 269 more days to serve before his first parole hearing. If he was involved in Jodi's murder *cough*, I hope LE can get their ducks in order within that time so that there's not a question of him getting out again.

The video in the article show's her grandmother saying, "She's dead 'cuz she knew, she knew who did this to her."

Certainly by now they have DNA results for McCann and have tried to match it to the DNA found on Jodi's body, right? Why haven't we heard either way? And, presumably, if it did match, LE would bring murder charges, right?

McCann had given a non-factual excuse as to why Jodi's DNA would be found in his car (because of transference from Jodi's mom at the crime scene) but it's never been reported about the DNA found on Jodi's body and whether he had an excuse for that, too. Or, if it's even his!

Does anyone have more information on this? TIA!

McCann's DNA was not a match but now LE has a new target to test.

Daniel Kevin Furlong lived in Constantine at the time but his DNA wasn't taken. Furlong was arrested Wednesday, two weeks after a 10-year-old girl alleged he invited her into his home’s garage at Colonial Estates Mobile Home Park, then pinned her against his car, attempted to restrain her with extension cords and threatened her with a steak knife. Several young girls have said Furlong watched them and tried to get them alone.

Investigators have sent Furlong’s DNA to the Michigan State Police crime lab for analysis. Honeysett estimates it will be several weeks before police know if Furlong’s sample matches male DNA collected at the crime scene from Parrack’s body or any other pending cold cases.

I think they ought to find out where Furlong was living when Brittney Ann Beers was taken. She was last seen riding a bicycle just as Jodi was.

CENTREVILLE, MI -- Almost eight years after 11-year-old Jodi Parrack was strangled to death in Constantine, a man is finally sitting in the St. Joseph County Jail facing charges on her murder.

Daniel Kevin Furlong, 65, of White Pigeon, was arrested Thursday after his DNA matched two samples found on Jodi's clothing, St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough said.

Furlong is charged with homicide, kidnapping, felony murder and criminal sexual conduct in Jodi's death. He was denied bond Thursday.

[...]
Furlong did not have a police record before August and is not the suspect in any other cases, although authorities are continuing to look into that, McDonough said.

The DNA match was a huge break in a case that has long perplexed investigators.

SO incredibly happy this family is getting closure!!!!! Does Britney Beers have a thread here? I'm local to these cases and I've not heard of her??

I wonder what this does for McCann? In on it, or a huge mistake?

McCann is getting out of prison soon. He lied when questioned by LE, perjury was his crime. I highly doubt he was in out it but lied about some things during the investigation. I think this helps him return home with everyone knowing someone else killed Jodi.
