My thoughts are 1) there are people who wouldn't mind a little extra adventure/intrigue added to their outdoor adventure, 2) for families with kids, if they happened to come across the body at least it wouldn't be so unexpected - they would know who to call, what to do if they saw a notice about...
Willard Bay story has been updated to positively confirm it was a man who had gone kayaking there about a month ago.
What both these stories tell us, is spring is finally here, hinterlands are thawing, and hikers and outdoors-people are getting out and about... maybe there's a better chance...
I'm not a lawyer, so I too wonder by what/if any mechanism that information (if true, of course) could be introduced to the process - it certainly seems relevant as far as how the alleged perp should be sentenced if convicted (forms a pattern of behavior not a misunderstood prank).

The arraignment was Friday. Apparently no change in bail, so he's still a free man. Separately he was dismissed from BYU and banned from campus.
