AL - Kevin Thompson, 29, abducted & murdered, Jacksonville, 20 April 2011

This case makes me so angry. I keep typing and backing up. So I will just say this.

Kevin, I am so sorry there are evil 's in this world. RIP. Many hugs and prayers for your mother and all who loved you.

I'm feeling the same way, Suzi. I'm angry.

This made me feel sick when I saw that they found him. I am so mad about this one. How dare they do that to a guy who was just living and loving his life. Why do people think they have any right to harm or kill anyone else. Why why why why.

RIP Kevin

He had a master's degree obtained through scholarships and worked three jobs for spending money while in college. Hard-working and upstanding young man. Even after he got a teaching job, he kept his Walmart job part-time. He didn't run with a bad crowd.
So senseless.....

RIP Kevin. I'm praying for your family and your students, these poor babies shouldn't have to face something so horrible in their young lives, and you shouldn't have been taken by such evil!

Jovon Gaston, 26, is one of three men charged with capital murder in connection with the 2011 stabbing death of Wellborn Elementary School teacher Kevin Thompson. In court Wednesday, Calhoun County Circuit Judge Bud Turner set Gaston’s trial to begin Sept. 28.

Nicholas Smith, 26, was sentenced to death after being found guilty July 2, 2013, for his involvement in the killing. Calhoun County District Attorney Brian McVeigh told the court Wednesday that he had hoped to try the other man charged in the homicide, Tyrone Thompson, before Gaston... Thompson’s defense attorneys have asked for experts to determine whether their client is mentally competent to stand trial...

Prosecutors in Smith’s trial alleged that the three men kidnaped the victim, drove him to several ATMs in Anniston and Jacksonville and robbed him at gunpoint of $400. Prosecutors believe the men then drove to a secluded portion of U.S. 278 outside of Piedmont where Thompson was stabbed to death and left by the side of the road.

The statement from Kevin's mother (below) is heartbreaking.

"The victim's mother, Frances Curry, told The Anniston Star that she suspected Tyrone Thompson was involved in her son's disappearance even before Kevin Thompson's body was found. She said Tyrone Thompson was "always in and out of trouble" and that her son had tried to help him in the past."

"She said her son "made all who knew him better people.""

Alabama Court Overturns Death Sentence

The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals on Friday reversed the death sentence that 29-year-old Jovon Dwayne Gaston received for his capital murder conviction in the killing of Calhoun County teacher Kevin Thompson.

The court refused to overturn Gaston’s conviction. But it says he deserves another sentencing hearing because a judge failed to tell jurors how to weigh the testimony of relatives who were affected by Thompson’s slaying.
