AL AL - Tuscaloosa Co, WhtFem 108UFAL, 30-40, near Sipsey River, Apr'82

I'm squarely in the Alma camp on this one -- the dark hair, the right age/height/weight, her slightly unkempt appearance (from a year living on the fringe?), and being an unknown in the area. Tuscaloosa County is a straight shot up I-20 from Shreveport; maybe she hitched a ride with a trucker?

Does anyone know if Alma was ever submitted as a possible match? If so, was there any response? Unfortunately, this UID has not been entered into NamUs, so there's no rule-out list to look at.

Its now 2016 and I dont see any evidence that this was submitted as possible match? The profile is still on the DOE network too. I think there is a reasonable chance that the UID is Alma too.

Alma's NamUs page says, under "DNA", "Status: Initial inquiry underway". So I surmise that someone's trying to get familial DNA, possibly to run it against this UID.

This UID doesn't seem to have a NamUs profile though (I just checked IdentifyUs, no dice).

I did a little more research on the Alma O'Con Breedlove. The link I had posted was to Woodlawn High School in Shreveport, LA. At Ancestry.com Alma O'Con appears in some old yearbooks, one of which was Woodlawn HS. There is a picture of her holding a tennis racket and it sure looks like the same Alma O'Con who is in the MP photo.

This leads to two questions - 1. where did the Breedlove come from or why is it not part of the MP profile and 2. why is she listed as deceased if she is missing (unless she was declared dead)?

On April 18, 1982, the body of a white female was discovered in Slaughter Creek near the Sipsey River in Romulus. Her age is estimated between 34 and 38. According to Sgt. Jeremy Franks with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, authorities exhumed the remains in 2013 for DNA testing that was unavailable in 1982.

The victim had been beaten and strangled to death. She was about 5 feet, 4 inches tall and weighed about 110 pounds. She had dark-brown hair, brown eyes and a scar under her right eyebrow.

Theresa Baxter & JD look almost identical - they definitely have the same nose. Maybe her husband did hire someone to kill her but she somehow got away and had to start a new life? Plus she wasn't reported missing until 1988, so nobody would have known that she was being looked for. Maybe someone finally caught up to her. This is obviously wild speculation here, but the similarities between them are uncanny.

On a more realistic note, JWD mentioned that the area where she was found is heavily forested and remote. I'm wondering how easy it would have been to access this area by chance (as in, just looking for a good place to fish and happen upon this spot) or if it was more like you had to be a local/skilled outdoorsman to find it. If that's the case, maybe it would be worth it to look into fishermen, hikers, campers etc., maybe not as suspects but as potential links to the victim. The circumstances here do make it seem like she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, though.

Hopefully Alma O'Con's DNA can be tested against this woman's soon. She looks promising.

Circumstances:
The unidentified woman’s body was discovered by three fishermen behind a log and was partially submerged with her upper torso leaning against the embankment of the Black Warrior River. The woman had been sexually assaulted, severely beaten, strangled and thrown into the river. Her autopsy showed there were signs of a violent struggle and some injuries were inflicted after her death.

LE created sketches along with providing actual photos of the woman through media and legal outlets throughout the area asking for the public's help in identifying her. A few witnesses came forward with the some information however no one knew whom the woman was.

Investigators received a witness account of seeing a woman and a man near Robertson Cemetery Road on April 16th. Their car had gotten stuck in the mud and the woman asked for help. The man was irate and cursing the woman and blaming her for the car becoming stuck in the mud. The man also had made comment of being at a bar earlier in the day.

The man was described as Caucasian, 35-40 years old, muscular build, reddish complexion, clean shaven, 6’1”, 180-200 lbs. The car described as a 1973-1974 Ford LTD green in color with a dark vinyl top with possible damage to the front end.

The night prior to the woman being discovered a group of campers were camping near where her body was discovered. It was noted the campers were target shooting bottles off of a log but did not hear, see or smell anything while they were there.

The unidentified woman was buried Dec 9th, 1982 at Sunset Memorial Park in Northport, AL. The Tuscaloosa County administration and the funeral home jointly paid for her funeral. Local news media outlets dubbed her as “Ms. X”.

The woman’s body was exhumed in July 2012 and her body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences lab where a DNA profile was created. Her DNA sample was submitted to the FBI’s national database however it resulted in no matches.

I think Tuscaloosa Jane Doe and Judith Hofferman look similar.

Judith went missing in 1980 from Virginia. She was 33. She drove to the airport, left her car in the lot, and never returned.

It's kind of difficult to tell based on the pm photo, but I see similarities in face shape, eyebrow shape (both women have a very rounded arch to the brow and very thin brows), a large space between the mouth and nose, and Judith's hairstyle is similar to the pm photo. Judith and Jane Doe's nose and nostrils don't look identical, but it could be the angle the pictures were taken from, rhinoplasty (doubtful), or injury.

Can anyone see official rule out list in NamUs and post it here please?

Thank you

Updated Doe profile. Notice the age estimate has changed. Also note that the NamUs profile shows Fosters, AL as the location where she was found. Romulus and Fosters, AL are about 7 miles apart according to Google Maps.

Circumstances of Discovery
The victim as located in April 1982 in Slughter Creek, on the banks of the Black Warrior River, in rural Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. She was sexually assaulted, strangled, and severely beaten .

Investigators believe the victim was possibly fishing in the area at the time of the attack, based on what she was wearing. It was likely she was not local to the area, investigators surmise.

Witnesses saw a woman matching the victim's description on April 16, 1982 with a man about 35-40 years old. The pair's vehicle, a 1973 or 1974 Ford LTD with a dark vinyl top with possible front-end damage, was stuck in a muddy area along Robert Cemetery Road. The woman asked the two witnesses for help, while the man remained in the vehicle and was visibly upset. He swore and blamed the woman for the accident. He was further described as white with a ruddy complexion and was about 6'1" tall at a weight between 180 and 200 pounds.

The woman was buried on December 9, 1982 in Sunset Memorial Park. She was nicknamed "Miss X" by the press.

Good catch! ITA, I noticed the resemblance as well. I came here to suggest her as a PM. Your description helped me to see the resemblance even clearer, it seems. I'd encourage you to submit her as a PM. Also, in case others may not have seen, TJD's NamUs profile has two more PM photos on page 2 of the pdf file.

ETA - VA - VA - Judith Hofferman, 33, Fairfax Station, 3 March 1980

Thanks! I'm glad someone else sees the resemblance.
I sent in the PM. Hopefully will hear back soon and they will consider looking into it. It's the first suggestion I've ever sent in.
