Algerian Plane missing, 24 July 2014

France24 is calling it flight AH5017. I thought it was MD83?

German nationals were passengers on both this plane and MH17. :(

Could it be a code share thing?
One airline company called it AH5017 and another called it MD83.
That's all I can think of for there being two different codes.

Pretty sure the AH is the fligfht number - all reports indicate it was a MD83 - last generation aircraft .Derivative of the DC-9 which starting in 1965........ Its a narrow body airliner...

They keep extending and improving on each model as the DC -9 faded the MD 80 was really the latest DC 9, but Douglas aircraft merge red with McDonald so they called it MD 80 (same thing as 777=100 777=200 etc. etc.)

The MD80 itself started in 1980... and you will notice this is MD 83 so it is the third round of "refinements" on the basic airliner itself which itself was refinement of the main design in 1965. It was a very popular jetliner, it had two engines ($) , passengers and crew liked her

..............the DC-9 was followed by the introduction of the MD-80 series in 1980. The MD-80 series was originally called DC-9-80 series. It was a lengthened DC-9-50 with a higher maximum takeoff weight (MTOW), a larger wing, new main landing gear, and higher fuel capacity. The MD-80 series features a number of variants of the Pratt & Whitney JT8D turbofan engine having higher thrust ratings than those available on the DC-9.

The MD-80 series was further developed into the McDonnell Douglas MD-90 in the early 1990s. It has yet another fuselage stretch, a glass cockpit (first introduced on the MD-88) and completely new International Aero V2500 high-bypass turbofan engines. In comparison to the very successful MD-80, relatively few MD-90s were built.

To take the tale further Boeing bought MD and the 717 is a deriative of both DC-9 and MD- 80!!!!!!!!Whew huh!

MD83 is the aircraft model. Like MAL 370 is a 777 200 ER, and MAL 0017 is a 777 200

type of plane!

A prayer for those aboard and condolences to their families......:(

Air Algerie plane with 116 on board falls off radar

London (CNN) -- An Air Algerie flight with 116 people on board has dropped off radar, prompting a search for the missing plane, the airline's operator said Thursday.

Flight 5017 lost radar contact 50 minutes after takeoff from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, early Thursday. It was supposed to arrive at Algiers' Houari Boumediene Airport about four hours later.

The plane, an MD-83, was carrying 110 passengers, two pilots and four crew members. The MD-83 is part of the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 family of twin-engine, single-aisle jets.

The plane belongs to a private Spanish company, Swiftair, but it appears to have been operated by Air Algerie.

"We have lost contact with the plane," Swiftair said...

Federal Aviation Administration in Washington had explicity warned civil aircraft to avoid flying over Mali because of insurgent activity.

The Notice to Airmen - or NOTAM - read:

THERE IS RISK TO THE SAFETY OF U.S. CIVIL FLIGHTS OPERATING INTO, OUT OF, WITHIN OR OVER MALI FROM SMALL-ARMS, ROCKETPROPELLED GRENADES, ROCKETS AND MORTARS, AND ANTI-AIRCRAFT FIRE, TO INCLUDE SHOULDER-FIRED, MAN-PORTABLE AIR DEFENSE SYSTEMS.

A French Ministry of Defense official tells Fox News that the Air Algerie jet carrying 116 people that vanished from radar shortly after takeoff late Wednesday night has crashed in Mali, and that two French fighter jets have located the wreckage.

France’s military has dispatched two Mirage fighter jets based in West Africa to search for the plane. "They will search an area from its last known destination along its probable route." The search for the plane will be difficult as it was set to cross a large swath of the desert. “It’s a very tough area where there’s nothing … it’s the middle of nowhere, really.”
