'I miss her so much': Family of missing Stuttgart woman holds on to hope 6 years later

April 20
After six years without a promising lead, the family of missing Arkansas woman Michelle Owens isn’t giving up hope that she’ll someday be found.

Owens was 40 years old when she went missing in Stuttgart in April 2015.

Owens’ family said she had mental disabilities and was dependent on others, but socially accepted.

Stuttgart police said they saw Owens at the Kwiki Car Wash at 13th and Main streets on April 21, 2015, two days after her family last saw her. Her family said that isn't possible.

Arkansas State Police investigators provided technical assistance in the case, but Stuttgart police remain the primary lead on the case.

"It's been a long six years with no solid leads in her disappearance," Police Chief Mark Duke said. "We still run down every lead we get when they come in. Her case has never been closed and will not be closed until Michelle is located. Someone knows something. We just need them to come forward and share the information with us or Arkansas State Police so we can bring Michelle home."

Michelle was 40 when she went missing in 2015. Her younger sister, Katherine Johnson Walker, said she spoke with Michelle for the last time on April 19, 2015. They talked on the phone for the last time at 4 p.m. When Johnson Walker tried to call her back around 6 p.m., Michelle did not answer her phone.

Police response, new strategies

Michelle’s family reported her missing to the Stuttgart Police Department after the unanswered call. Police and Michelle’s family have disagreed on the timeline of her disappearance. Officers reported seeing Michelle at East 13th Street and South Main Street near the former Kwiki Car Wash on April 21, 2015. Her family members have said they do not believe the woman police saw on April 21 was Michelle and that police should have jumped into action immediately on April 19. Johnson Walker said her sister is mentally disabled, which increased the situation’s urgency.

“I do not feel like they did their job because they should have gotten on it right then and there. We knew it was just so odd for Michelle not to be answering her phone,” Johnson Walker said.
