Deceased/Not Found Australia - Cheryl Grimmer, 3, Fairy Meadow Beach, NSW, 12 Jan 1970

you have to wonder if Jessop was erroneously excluded. Why else would someone, very possibly him, contact the Grimmers with genuine details about how Vicki Barton was killed?

I wonder when the phone calls regarding Vicki Barton were made to the Grimmers?
Vicki was found in August 1970 and I don't think it would of been public knowledge as to the cause of her death at the time the calls were made.

Detective Inspector Brad Ainsworth said almost half a century later, witnesses have given police a description of a man they believe could be Cheryl's killer.
"Police are now making an appeal for the identity of a person of interest," he said.
"He was about 17 or 18 at the time, so with our calculations we'd say he'd be in his sixties or early sixties now.
"It's a big burden to carry around for nearly 50 years."
Witnesses told police they believed the man was about 5'10" or 180 centimetres, with a medium build, brown hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion.
Detectives received this crucial piece of information when they staged a re-enactment of the toddler's disappearance a fortnight ago.
Detective Inspector Ainsworth said several witnesses, who were aged nine, 10 and 12 when Cheryl disappeared, returned to the scene and all mentioned the person of interest.
"He was just seen loitering here and he was seen here in the morning and the afternoon," he said.
"He was there, he stood out, he wasn't doing anything really overt that stood out."

Man ordered

to stand trial

KATOOMBA: Mr Alfred James Jessop, 24,

was committed for trial yesterday on a charge

of murdering Vicki Barton at Lawson eight years

ago.

Asked by Mrs Sleeman, SM, if he had anything

to say, Mr Jessop replied, "I am not guilty. I wish

to reserve my defence".

Mr Jessop was committed for trial at the Central

Criminal Court, Sydney. Bail was refused.

Earlier, Miss Cathleen Jessop, 21, of Hornsby,

told the court that her brother, Mr Alfred Jessop, had

forced her to have sexual intercourse with him two

or three times, about the date of the murder. She said

she was about 12 at the time.

She testified that he had been away from the rest

of the family for part of the day on which Vicki

Barton disappeared

"Police have reopened the investigation into the disappearance of three-year-old Cheryl Grimmer - who vanished from a shower block almost 50 years ago.

Investigators now believe there is a link between the abduction and a home for for troubled teenage boys.

Former staff and residents of the Mount Penang Training School, north of Sydney, have been urged to come forward."

From your link, Greg:

''The investigation is definitely progressing and it's appropriate that we follow up various leads to determine whether they're relevant to the case,' Detective Inspector Ainsworth said.

'One of those lines of inquiry means someone associated with the boys' home back then might be able to help us.'

Australian police revealed in December they believed the youngster was kidnapped by a teenage boy - who would now be in his early 60s.

He was seen running towards bushland from the area where Cheryl vanished.

He was described by police as caucasian, aged between 16 and 17, about 152cm tall with a medium build, brown hair, blue eyes and fair complexion.

The suspect was missed on the day and though they would not reveal many details, investigators are 'confident [they] are on the right track'.

'We are calling this a breakthrough in the investigation. It's something that was missed over the years,' Detective Sergeant Damian Loone told the Daily Telegraph.

The vital clue was found by reviewing many boxes of old case files looking for leads the original investigation missed or didn't follow up on.'

From Find & Connect: History and information about Australian orphanages, children's homes and other institutions:

Mount Penang Training School for Boys (1946 - 1987)

Police believe a suspect in child’s abduction 47 years ago could have been a resident of juvenile centre - 24 Jan 2017

"The officer in charge of the cold case, Detective Sergeant Damien Loone, said a suspect had been identified and could have been a resident at the centre or associated with it in some way."

I wonder if they were a 'trustee' or 'trainee'? Or the member of a sporting team? The other possibility is that they were being 'billeted' with a family over the Christmas school holidays?

IIRC there were some very bad people who 'graduated' from Mount Penang to even worse institutions such as Tamworth as youths and then as adults to Long Bay, etc. Tamworth was known as the 'School for Killers':

Strewth indeed, Rich!

I wish I could get my hands on a copy of this book:

Author: Rubie, Valerie.
Title: Sent to the mountain : a history of Mount Penang Juvenile Justice Centre 1911-1999 / Valerie
Publisher: West Gosford, N.S.W. : Mount Penang Closure Committee, Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre, 2003.
Description: xi, 236 p. : ill., maps, ports. ; 29 cm.
ISBN: 0646382985
Notes: Includes index.
Bibliography: p. 227-230.

I think there's another title by by a former 'inmate'. After reading just a little bit about the brutality of those institutions, it's little wonder they were breeding grounds for chronically violent offenders.

I just hope they find Cheryl's remains and give her a proper funeral and burial/cremation.

This sentence stood out to me in the article below:

'He [the suspect] was seen running towards bushland from the area where Cheryl vanished.'

I've been researching the area near where Cheryl was last seen in the company of her suspected abductor/murderer. Puckey's Estate is close to Fairy Meadow Beach and, from what I read in the only comment to the story below, was frequented by some fairly dodgy types:

Forgotten Illawarra: Puckey's Estate

Cheryl's disappearance is also documented there:

A woman was sexually assaulted at Puckey's as recently as 2014:

It's only 7 minutes' walk (probably much less if Cheryl was being carried by a youth) from Fairy Meadow Surf Club to Puckey's Estate through bushland, according to Google Maps' satellite view:

Also, the reviews are a little scary:

That's interesting. A family friend is a local there who has maintained since Cheryl Grimmer disappeared "She's in Puckey's Swamp". It makes sense now if they are looking at an offender who may not have had access to a car. Family friend's alibi checks out, btw :)

It seems a likely place to secrete a body, doesn't it? On second thought, police and others probably searched the area thoroughly at the time of Cheryl's disappearance. Still, it makes you wonder if they missed something.

Thank Goodness your family friend has a verifiable alibi :) It's always helpful to have someone on the ground. Do they know of any connection to Mount Penang Institution for Boys through sporting or other groups?
