GUILTY Australia - Michelle Buckingham, 16, murdered, Shepparton, Vic, 21 Oct 1983

Fantastic work Vic Police!!...Applause!!

March 12, 2014

More than 30 years after a 16-year-old girl was found stabbed to death on a country Victorian roadside, a Brisbane man has faced court charged with her murder.

Steven James Bradley, 52, will be extradited to Victoria on Wednesday afternoon to front Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, charged with the murder of Michelle Buckingham in 1983

The new breakthrough came from a tip from a local resident. The 52-year-old man arrested on Wednesday morning lived in Shepparton at the time and is believed to have stayed at the Strayleaves Caravan Park for several months.

It is believed he left Shepparton after the teenager went missing but before the body was found

Dressed in a red and black polo shirt and sporting closely cropped hair, the diminutive Mr Bradley, a pet groomer by occupation, showed no emotion throughout the hearing.

It's SO fabulous that after 30 years he has been caught!!! I love the justice of it.

Because after so long he surely thought he had gotten away with it........

Karmic justice:jail:

Seems kind of weird to me that he is a short pet groomer, for some reason.......

Okay, so this article says he lives in a boarding house which makes more sense to me - I had some image of a normally functioning dog groomer in my head from the previous article.:blushing:

But a middle aged, single man living in a boarding house in the city paints a different picture.....

Brisbane police sources told The Courier-Mail that Bradley was arrested on a warrant issued to Victorian police at the boarding house were he was living in Brisbane’s CBD, about 5.40am.

I'm picturing an overweight, caucasian with glasses and greasy hair. A loner and with not many belongings, just trying to get by.

I'm with you on that, Seabreeze! Except I imagine him as skinny for some reason. But yeah, definitely the greasy hair......I guess we'll find out at some point.

Whatever he looks like - he's one creepy dude!!

I'm just glad he's been caught.

Totally agree, fantastic result although what a painstaking wait for her families.

THE mother of a teenager killed more than 30 years ago has been shocked by news that a man has been arrested over her murder.

Elvira Buckingham said the news that Queensland police had arrested and charged a 52-year-old man on Wednesday over the death of her daughter Michelle had thrown her.

She had doubted an arrest would ever come

This reminds me of the Daniel Morcombe case when the hideous Brett Cowan's defence lawyer said he had emphysema and was a father. Like that's a mitigating factor or something......

Ring a ding ding - who cares??!! They shouldn't have killed anybody......

Mr Bradley, a former Shepparton resident, sat quietly between two court officers during Thursday's administrative hearing.

The court was told he had depression, experienced panic attacks and took medication to help him stop smoking

YES!

Omg, have been away, come back and THIS!!!!!! Omg, such great news!!!!!

Too excited to say much more for now. I'm all a-dither, lol!

Michelle and her family might get both justice and some peace now. I could not be more happy for them, that they have finally got her killer.

Key homicide detective who investigated Michelle Buckingham murder dies before court hearing

July 03, 2014

THE lead homicide squad detective who investigated the mysterious murder of a Victorian teen three decades ago has died just months after a Queensland man was charged with her murder.

Steven James Bradley, 52, was extradited in March and charged with murdering 16-year-old Michelle Elvira Buckingham on October 21, 1983 — the date she was last seen alive.

Mr Bradley would have been 21 at the time.

Detective Senior Sergeant Albert Fry, who was to be cross-examined at a preliminary hearing for Mr Bradley later this year, died on Monday, Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard today

Rest in peace Detective Fry - job well done!!

Thanks Marly for posting this.

Rest in peace DSS Fry, and thank you.

At least he got to see an arrest made in Michelle's case. I know it would have meant such a great deal to him.

ELVIRA Buckingham says nothing will fix her broken heart, not even a man being charged with the murder of her teenage daughter in Shepparton 30 years ago.

Her mother yesterday sat in the same Shepparton home where she had brought up Michelle and siblings Karen and Phillip.

‘‘I don’t really know how I’m feeling,” Mrs Buckingham, 66, said.

“It’s all been topsy-turvy and hard to believe.

“It’s not over yet by a long shot, is it?

‘‘That broken heart will always be there, to the day I die I’ll have that.

“But if they can get justice...’’

Mrs Buckingham had to stop believing her daughter’s case would be solved in order to survive.

She watched glitzy television specials and read true crime books on the country’s most famous unsolved murders, but never did they remember her Michelle.

Thinking of Michelle's mum...

I've been avoiding this thread, I don't do emotional very well. But I've had a bit of a cry for Michelle's family since the arrest. Must be so hard on them..

I always wondered why Michelle's case wasn't in the unsolved books, or even on the unsolved cases websites.. Too many young women in this country go missing or are found murdered and nothing much is said and they aren't included in lists and websites, the case goes cold and silent, so they fade away in the minds of the general public. Or worse, are never heard of at all.

When we should be keeping their memories alive and up front in everyone's minds.

Well said Ausgirl! They should never be forgotten!
My thoughts too are with Michelle's mum, I can't begin to imagine her roller coaster of emotions... I just hope that they get a speedy conviction so that's one less thing hanging over her head.
