Bones Found on Property

ANTIOCH, CA - Search dogs that specialize in sniffing out human remains and bones picked up a scent Monday morning on the property of Phillip and Nancy Garrido in Antioch.

Hayward Police Lt. Chris Orrey said the dogs detected the scent near the same place where cadaver dogs led searchers last week.

The search dogs were scouring the grounds for any evidence that would link the Garridos to the 1988 kidnapping of Michaela Garecht in Hayward and the 1989 disappearance of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff in Dublin.

Crews expected to start digging on the property Monday afternoon. At the news conference, Orrey told reporters nothing of significance has been found yet. More at link: http://www.news10.net/news/story.aspx?storyid=67293&catid=2

Just want to point out in this discussion that Jaycee and the girls had a number of dogs and cats, so there likely will be buried bones in the yard. And, yes, I'm sure they'll test every one to determine its origin...

That's what I thought, but the dogs they are using are trained to sniff out "human" bones.

RIGHT! To add a piece of info, these are "historical human remains detection dogs" that alerted in the same general place the anomaly was found by Ground-Penetrating Radar. So, from my understanding, there is NO CHANCE that these are beef bones chewed by the rottie! As Lt. Orrey said, "Now if we find anything, it's going to be a tragic ending." In other words, when the dig up those bones . . .

She did, of course, add that these dogs have found remains dating back to some 400-500 AD (check the raw vid of today's news conference on Kron.com for specific date)

Another piece - - I thought it was interesting that an excavation specialist from the coronoer's bureau came in to help them plan the dig for today.

This just in - - looks like LE is digging a hole in the yard next door to the Garrido residence as well! (Monday, Sept 21) - Not TOO much info in this video, but you can see what's going on next door just a bit. Looks like GPR may have turned up something, and they started to dig without any warning to the press . . .

ANTIOCH -- Police searching Phillip Garrido's home and property in Antioch discovered more bone fragments Monday but said they appeared to be too old to be connected to any of the cases authorities are trying to link to the convicted rapist and kidnapper.
Authorities used a dog trained to detect the scent of human remains as well as ground penetrating radar that can search up to 25 feet below the surface. But hopes appeared to be dwindling that searchers would discover anything related to the disappearance to two Bay Area girls in the late 1980s. more at link: http://www.sacbee.com/latest/story/2199015.html

Authorities are bracing for a "tragic ending" as they prepare to dig in an "area of interest" they located in the backyard of a Northern California couple charged in the kidnapping of a little girl — and suspected in the disappearances of two others.
Hayward, Calif. police used bone-sniffing dogs and a high-tech sonar device to zero in on a piece of property owned by Phillip and Nancy Garrido, who authorities say kept a captive girl locked away in a soundproof backyard compound for 18 years.

If the cadaver dogs hit there, then unfortunately I think there will be a tragic ending here...

ITA. It seems LE recently, has been downplaying any possible discovery or connections to the other two cases. The above article posted is the first I've seen indicating there really might be something there. We'll find out soon I guess.

If they do find anything, I don't see it as a tragic end. Whatever happened, if anything happened, had already happened. It might be a relief to find some answers.

Yeah, I have noticed that. I can't tell if they are being open and honest or if they are just trying to calm public inquiry until they know more.

On one hand they are digging in there. On the other hand they seem to really downplay the results of this digging. They say most bones they found are too old, not human, etc.
As a result I have no idea as to whether anything will come out of all that digging.

Digging Comes To A Halt In Antioch
No Official Word On Whether Search Has Stopped

UPDATED: 2:10 pm PDT September 22, 2009

Digging came to a stop Tuesday in an ongoing Antioch investigation of two missing girls and searchers put some tools away, but there was no official word on whether police were ending their days-long search for possible remains.

<snipped>

Police could be seen digging early Tuesday, but work came to a stop at about 11 a.m. Shortly after 1 p.m., searchers fanned out and started putting away tools and tents. Some of the investigators' vehicles also left the area.

Officials earlier said they would consider suspending the search if no key evidence was found.

No cadaver dogs were brought to the land on Tuesday.

Put yourself into PG's shoes... would he bring other girls home, especially those he didn't intend to keep? Would he bury any unwanted infants in his own yard?

No, he probably wouldn't. He would have dumping grounds. He would keep that part of his life secret from Jaycee. He wouldn't be able to control her emotional reactions to things like that, especially later, when she was fairly free to wander around the back yard. He would have had to tell her so many stories about why he took her, to brainwash and coerce her into being controllable, that he wouldn't want her going off the deep end if he brought some other poor (hysterical, frightened) girl home, and then she disappeared. He could lie to her about an infant dying but he would make sure to remove the body from anywhere that she could find it.

We don't know what seemed 'normal' to Jaycee after all of those years of being held in such an alternative reality, but we can guess that she would react differently to another child in need, even if she had internalized her own feelings.

I think that, if he committed other crimes, he kept them well away from home.

How does everyone feel about this right now? That the digging concluded with no conclusive evidence to tie PG to Michael's kidnapping or Ilene's disappearance? I can't imagine how the searchers feel because I feel spent just watching this part of the investigation unfold.

It's just another weird chapter in a very sickening/weird story. I wonder what the bones they found are? :waitasec:

I think it pretty much wraps up this story as far as the extent of the crime is concerned, I don't think they are going to find anything linking PG to those girls. The only thing that could change that now IMO is if Jaycee comes up with additional info, or Nancy cuts some sort of a deal (which she would only be able to do if she had access to substantive information). Both of those are long shots though. PG may have done other stuff, but there will likely never be evidence of anything because it would have happened decades ago. Even with Jaycee he appears to have lost interest in her a very long time ago.

The big questions about this case going forward are going to revolve around two main themes. Firstly, there is the story of the Garrido's motivation and psycology, and secondly there is the story of the truimph of human spirit. One of innocence being lost, reborn and blossoming in a garden of evil. Those two stories can teach us a lot about morality, one of darkness and the other of light.
