Why would Smich be interested if the incinerator was for burning garbage? If the incinerator worked, #Bosma would have been burned in it

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 2m2 minutes ago
Crown suggests if it had worked, it would've been used to burn innocent target. But it failed, so commercial incinerator was purchased.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 59s60 seconds ago
Texts about "mission stuff" is reference to a "mission kit," according to Crown. Dark clothing, bolt cutters, etc.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Smich looking directly at jury in courtroom. Millard taking notes.

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 1m1 minute ago
Texts suggest there was a mission "kit" with stuff needed for their criminality. Tape. Change of clothes. Etc

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 57s58 seconds ago
Crown says he was vague about the plan changing over time because he as lying. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 35s36 seconds ago
He says if it was truly a plan to scope and steal, why would they show their faces? #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 41s41 seconds ago
Why did the plan change to, show your face to he person you plan to steal from? Leitch says. Identifying them was non issue, he says

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 39s40 seconds ago
He says they showed their faces because "identification was a non-issue. Dead men don't do photo lineups." #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 17s18 seconds ago
If you plan to kill the only witness to your crime, there is no witness, Leitch says

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 36s37 seconds ago
If plan was really to scope truck and steal later, victims would recognize their faces.

Leitch says Millard "took a chance" when showing his face to Sharlene and De Boer. "He's overconfident. He thinks he's untouchable."
by Adam Carter 10:23 AM

"He took the chance because he feels invincible," Leitch says.
by Adam Carter 10:23 AM

Leitch says it doesn't take 16 months to plan a theft, but it does take that long to plan a murder.
by Adam Carter 10:24 AM

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 50s51 seconds ago
He says defence has argued showing their faces to Sharlene #Bosma and Wayne De Boer proves they weren't planning to kill. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 42s43 seconds ago
Smich and Millard showed their faces to Tumanenko and at Bosma house.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 41s42 seconds ago
Leitch suggests their presence was a surprise. Smich hung back, but Millard "took a chance....that's the kind of guy he is." #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 1m1 minute ago
Millard and Smich were surprised to see Sharlene #Bosma and Wayne De Boer. Smich hid his face

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Crown says the reason they showed was because they intended to murder.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
"Dead men don't do photo lineups. If you're planning to kill the only witness to your crime, you can show your face."

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 46s46 seconds ago
He says Millard is "over confident. He thinks he's untouchable." Notes they kept their contact to a minimum and left quickly. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 1m1 minute ago
He says Millard felt invincible, and Mark Smich "followed his lead." #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 51s52 seconds ago
They weren't expecting to see Sharlene and Wayne DeBoer. Millard "took the chance because he feels invincible. Untouchable."

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 46s47 seconds ago
Dellen Millard took a chance. That's what he does. They never spoke and kept back from Sharlene & De Boer. "He feels invincible, untouchable"

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 32s33 seconds ago
Plan was always to kill. Doesn't take 15 months to plan a truck theft, says Crown. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 1m1 minute ago
Leitch tells jury to reject Smich's purposely vague story because it was designed to fit the evidence. "Don't buy it," he says. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 31s32 seconds ago
Smich is fitting his story to the obvious evidence. Don't buy it, Leitch says.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 49s49 seconds ago
Why not carry out plan earlier? Crown says they didn't have way to dispose of body yet. Also needed "proper plan."

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 32s33 seconds ago
Leitch says jury is likely asking themselves why it took so long. He says they needed a way to dispose of body--the Eliminator. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 35s36 seconds ago
"This was a plan to murder an innocent target. Dispose of his body." Circumstances had to be right.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 26s27 seconds ago
He says they also needed a solid plan. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 24s25 seconds ago
It took so long to plan because they needed a way to dispose of the body, Leich says. The ideal conditions didn't come until May 2013

Why did it take so long? Leitch says one answer is they didn't have a way to dispose of a body yet. The other is there had to be a "proper" plan.
by Adam Carter 10:24 AM

Leitch says the "ideal conditions" didn't materialize until May 2013.
by Adam Carter 10:25 AM

"Both are planning the design of the incinerator. Both have a keen interest in getting it ready." Why would Smich be so concerned about helping Millard burn his garbage? Leitch asks.
by Adam Carter 10:27 AM

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 35s36 seconds ago
In June 2012, Millard is texting Shane Schlatman about going over incinerator models. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 22s23 seconds ago
June 4, 2012, Millard texts Schlatman about buying incinerator. Smich is researching purchase.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 12s13 seconds ago
Smich too was part of that. References a text where Smich told Millard he's looking at a model. Writes "some chopping wood be necessary."

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 24s25 seconds ago
June 2012 Smich does research for incinerator, a mobile one. "Some chopping would be necessary."

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 23s24 seconds ago
"I'm looking at a mobile one right now. Some chopping would be necessary," Smich text. Crown says it is reference to dismemberment.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 16s17 seconds ago
He says Smich denied that was a reference to dismemberment. But Leitch asks what else makes sense. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 34s35 seconds ago
Smich testified it was reference to garbage incineration. Crown says you don't have to chop up garbage.

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 19s20 seconds ago
What could that mean except dismemberment? Leitch asks. Why would you need to chop garbage? #TimBosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 15s16 seconds ago
"Why would MS be so interested in helping DM burn his garbage?" asks Leitch. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 10s11 seconds ago
Leitch says both are keenly interested in the incinerator plans. "Why would mark Smich be interested in helping Millard burn his garbage?"

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 23s24 seconds ago
Leitch says "such is the trust between them" that they are regularly texting discussing schemes. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 21s22 seconds ago
The two continue to plan missions. "Such is the level of trust between them" that they regularly plan and discuss missions.

"If it was really built to burn garbage, why did Mark Smich have an interest in this?" Leitch says, noting there is no evidence of it being used that way. "This is just a cover story."
by Adam Carter 10:18 AM

Leitch is really quickly running through the timeline here, attempting to show how the two had planned this all along.
by Adam Carter 10:20 AM

Leitch says given all the mission we've heard about previously, "why did the plan suddenly change to show your face to the person you planned to steal the truck from?" Leitch says they showed their faces, because "identifying them was a non issue," and they "planned to kill the target." "Dead men don't do photo lineups."
by Adam Carter 10:21 AM

I've never understood the whole, "well everything was left in the open. No attempt to conceal identities etc."
Dead men don't do photo lineups. Igor did. Tim's wife and roommate could've.
The same with Pillay's, he's not guilty because he didn't try to cover anything. Left it out for everyone to see.
Not a good point IMO, but seems to be the one various people keep trying to drive home as the reasons.

This a dangerous statement. Millard had a quite capable truck. He didn't need a new one, he wanted a new one. Two different things.

I don't think it's a dangerous statement. Either way DM wanted and needed a truck. Sure he would've wanted a brand new one but either way he wanted a truck like Igor's or Tim's. He was antsy and running out of patience/time imo. He also had a mechanic at his disposal and knew he wouldn't have to necessarily worry about the service costs as much.

Yes. It was actually $11,000 I believe. Can't remember whose testimony finally brought that out. I think it was LW1 who said the entry fee for the race was $11,000 but then it was clarified later that it was that amount just for the gas.

MOO

Toronto ON to Ensenada Mexico is 4272km. 5 miles per gallon (Dodge with big trailer) is 56.5 litres/100km. 2414 litres of gas one way. 4828 litres of gas there and back. Add 172 litres for running around Baja area, side trips on way home.
At $1 cdn per liter in 2012, gas would be approx $5000 CDN for a round trip

Perhaps Billandrew can cross check my numbers, I'm not an accountant. (and neither is Lisa Williams) :)

It became clear that the homemade incinerator was an "epic fail" Leitch says, so they moved to a commercial model.
by Adam Carter 10:28 AM

Leitch pointing out that Millard's uncle vehemently denied having anything to do with the suggestion of pet cremation. Millard gave that reason as a "cover story," Leitch says.
by Adam Carter 10:30 AM

Leitch says there is one text Millard sent to Schlatman where he said he burned a deer at the farm, but says that's also a cover. "The fact is it was purchased with a murder in mind," Leitch says.
by Adam Carter 10:31 AM

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Homemade incinerator is "an epic fail." Search for commercial incinerator.

Adam Carter ‏@AdamCarterCBC 32s32 seconds ago
It became clear that the homemade incinerator was an "epic fail" Leitch says, so they moved to a commercial model. #TimBosma #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Look at one model. Millard says he needs bigger one. Why? Millard told "different people different things" about need for incinerator.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 56s56 seconds ago
Leitch notes that Millard asked a quote on a "larger" incinerator model. Wanted a bigger footprint--why? Leitch asks. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 45s45 seconds ago
June 18 2012 Millard is looking for a commercial incinerator. He wanted one that had a bigger opening hatch than the 1st model. Why?

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 30s30 seconds ago
Millard's uncle testified vehemently that he would not have considered a pet cremation business. It was a front, Leitch says

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 33s34 seconds ago
Leitch says if it was truly his goal to go into pet cremation biz - story disputed by witnesses - why would he need such a large model?

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 30s30 seconds ago
Leitch says Millard spent more than $23,000 getting the Eliminator and making it mobile--yet never cremated a single pet. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 25s25 seconds ago
Millard spent over $23,000 to buy Eliminator to incinerate pets. Never incinerated single pet. Why buy such big one for pets?

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 6s6 seconds ago
He spent over $23k on a mobile incinerator but has never incinerated a single pet. Why need the 500lb model?

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 34s34 seconds ago
Leitch says only evidence of anything burned was that Millard told Shane Schlatman he burned a deer at the farm. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 27s28 seconds ago
Pet incineration with vet uncle — uncle vehemently denies it — was a cover story. Plan was to "burn an innocent target."

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 57s57 seconds ago
Leitch says this was a cover story for Schlatman to explain why he owned it. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 40s40 seconds ago
It was purchased with murder in mind. The next step of the plan was complete, Leitch says

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 34s34 seconds ago
He says once they had The Eliminator, they now had the means to dispose of a body in 3 hours or less. #Bosma

I think DM and MS thought the their plan was foolproof and they'd be invincible. So I can see them not paying attention to all the things that could go wrong. Not to mention the camera footage and DNA. DM wanted a truck and he was tired of waiting. They were too stupid to think of all the things that could go wrong - from Igor to the forensics. It would be interesting to see what the jury thinks of that line of reasoning abut stuff being out in the open.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Could burn a body in 3 hours or less. Defence says why let everyone see Eliminator if it would be used for murder?

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 45s46 seconds ago
Leitch says defence argued why they then showed it to people. "there were a lot of unquestioning people hanging around Millard," he says.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 38s39 seconds ago
"There was a lot of unquestioning people" hanging out with Millard and Smich, says Leitch. Including Schlatman and Noudga.

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 59s59 seconds ago
A lot of unquestioning people hing around Dellen Millard, incl Shane Schlatman and Christina Noudga

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 47s47 seconds ago
According to Noudga, Millard told her it had been purchased to melt metal. "Another cover story," Leitch says. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 45s45 seconds ago
Noudga said Millard told her Eliminator would be used to melt metal. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 43s43 seconds ago
Effort to make Eliminator mobile and fuelled by propane was so it could be used at farm, with no electricity.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 31s31 seconds ago
Leitch says point of making it mobile was to make it fully portable, so it could be used at the farm where there was no electricity. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 49s49 seconds ago
The effort to make the incinerator mobile was so it could be used at the farm, Leitch says

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 18s19 seconds ago
Crown will later show they picked up Eliminator on night of May 6, 2013 to tow to hangar and incinerate Bosma. Easier at hangar.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 17s18 seconds ago
He says the farm did not have electricity and there would not have been a good spot to clean up the bloody pickup truck. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 11s12 seconds ago
On May 6 they picked up the incinerator and took it to the hangar so they could have light and isolation and power during clean up

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 38s38 seconds ago
"They towed it to the hangar so they could be out of sight," he says. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 5s5 seconds ago
Leitch says they chose to do it outside the hangar so as to not have any smoke depositing on ceiling as evidence. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 3s3 seconds ago
Used it outside hangar so as not to make smoke patterns on ceiling in hangar. But this allows for video of them firing up Eliminator.

Leitch says there were a "lot of unquestioning people" around Millard.
by Adam Carter 10:32 AM

Leitch pointing out that the design to make the Eliminator portable was not a common thing at all.
by Adam Carter 10:33 AM

Leitch says originally, the two planned to kill Bosma outside of the truck. "What idiots plan to kill someone inside the truck, leaving the huge mess? ... Something happened this night to spoil the plan."
by Adam Carter 10:36 AM

"It was the murder inside the tuck that was not part of the plan," Leitch says.
by Adam Carter 10:37 AM

The original plan failed, and so the revised plan is what we've heard about at trial, Leitch says.
by Adam Carter 10:37 AM

Now taking a 15 minute break.
by Adam Carter 10:38 AM

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 32s33 seconds ago
Choice to do it outside meant it was caught on "chilling" video. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 29s30 seconds ago
They chose to incinerate him outside so that the evidence wouldn't collect on the ceiling. That means we have video of it

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 6s7 seconds ago
Crown says plan was to kill #Bosma outside his truck. What "idiots" do a murder inside a truck? Something went wrong, leaving mess in truck.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 39s39 seconds ago
Leitch says the plan would've been to kill Tim #Bosma outside his truck. "What idiots" do a murder inside a truck?

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 30s30 seconds ago
Leitch says the plan was to murder #Bosma outside the truck but something went wrong

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 20s20 seconds ago
He suggests that's why he had meetings scheduled for May 7. It was supposed to be quick. A 3 hour job. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 31s31 seconds ago
The murder INSIDE the truck was not part of the plan. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 22s22 seconds ago
That's why Millard had meetings planned for next day.

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 17s17 seconds ago
The cleanup would have been quicker, if the murder happened outside, Leitch says.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 13s13 seconds ago
He expected an easy cleanup. A three hour job. "Still an all-nighter. But not a three-dayer," says Crown.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 42s42 seconds ago
Leitch says the goal had been to light up the Eliminator at the farm. "The original plan failed," he says. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 39s40 seconds ago
He says the "revised plan" required moving to the hangar for an extensive cleanup over several days. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 29s30 seconds ago
Taking the morning recess. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 23s24 seconds ago
They revised the plan, murder inside the truck, and spent days cleaning, Leitch says

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 51s51 seconds ago
Original plan failed, says Leitch. "They tow it (truck) to the hangar and do the clean-up there over several days."

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 36s36 seconds ago
Leitch asks for 15 minute break. #Bosma

I find this interesting as we have assumed LB's body was burned back in July.
Crown can use that to it's advantage. The ideal conditions didn't materialize until May 2013?? But yet those of us not on the jury know of poor Laura in July 2012

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 2m2 minutes ago
Leitch says only evidence of anything burned was that Millard told Shane Schlatman he burned a deer at the farm. #Bosma

Hmmmmm
Interesting. I don't recall this being entered into evidence earlier.
In an earlier post, I used my own experience of lifting deer as an example of why I feel DM could have put TB in the incinerator alone.
Sounds like a test run by DM. Perhaps more detail will come out in the LB trial.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 13s13 seconds ago
He expected an easy cleanup. A three hour job. "Still an all-nighter. But not a three-dayer," says Crown.

RSBM
How is 3 hrs an "all nighter"? If they did all this in the 3 hrs, they'd be home by midnight.
