CA CA - Jeff Joseph, 45, Hoopa, 21 June 2014

No news about Jeff. :(

The same goes for Sheila Francks and Danielle Brooks (Bertolini) missing in Humboldt county since February. It's not a good place to go missing.

There has been an update on the three sets of human remains found. One has been identified. One is in the process of checking DNA with possible family. The third is still unidentified. All are adult males.

Human Remains Found August 10:
What we knew: A hiker walking near the Cuneo Creek Campground discovered what she believed to be a human jawbone. Family members returned with her to the site and discovered what was believed to be a human skull. Law enforcement was summoned and the remains were confirmed to be human.

Updated Information: Searchers have now recovered approximately 35% of the remains. These have been identified as belonging to a male adult. The death is believed to have occurred within six months prior to the discovery. Deputy Coroner Roy Horton explained that the DNA has been sent in and his office is waiting on results.

I hope that Jeff's family has submitted DNA to the authorities.

Jeff is mentioned in this article about a newly missing woman, Jessica Lee Neiman. The article talks about the help that the NorCal Alliance for the Missing gives to the families.

For instance, Jeff Joseph who went missing last June, has family that lives far away from the area of Humboldt (Hoopa) where Joseph is believed to have disappeared. Nor Cal Alliance for the Missing has group members that are able to assist them in putting up flyers and collecting information. Trudy Nickens, the founder of Nor Cal Alliance for the Missing, said that Miller, who volunteers as a family advocate with the organization, has been helping Joseph’s family. “In Jeff’s case, she has reached out to so many people,” Nickens explained, “tribal police, investigators and law enforcement.”

The statistics cited in the article make it very clear why families cannot just leave the job of finding their loved one to LE.

Law enforcement is usually overwhelmed with cases and has little time to assist them. Here in Humboldt, the numbers of reports filed for missing adults is substantially higher per capita than for any other county in California. According to numbers provided by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for 2013, Humboldt County had 258 reports of missing persons per 100,000 population and San Francisco, its nearest competitor, had only 190 reports per 100,000. In total, DOJ reports that Humboldt had 347 reports for 2013—almost one per day. (Missing doesn’t necessarily mean that the individual has been harmed. They may be voluntarily out of contact with family and friends.)

Bumping for Jeff. No news. Thinking of his family and friends.

Since her name has appeared on this thread, I should mention that the skull of one of the missing women in Humboldt, Danielle Bertolini Brooks, has been found, over a year after she disappeared. This is both horrible news, confirming what her family knew, and good news if it can lead to an arrest. Heartfelt condolences to her loved ones.

Updates from Jeff's FB page. The mug shot posted is apparently someone the family's PI wants to speak to about Jeff's disappearance, not a named POI by LE.

Did they ever capture this guy? He is on Nor Cal's most wanted list.

He has been sought for a while:
http://lostcoastoutpost.com/2013/nov/11/epd-asks-do-you-know-man/

Also, someone posted here the rumor is he met with Jeff on or about June 20, 2014.

I wonder why they met up? If someone knows they met, did that person come forward with the circumstances?

Good questions, GigTu. Considering Jeff's background in selling marijuana, and that he was heading for property he had leased in "The Emerald Triangle," it's likely the rumored meeting was marijuana related. It's a very dangerous area, many people are involved in illegal growing, and whoever knows something is unlikely to talk to LE. Even if they did, LE hasn't found the guy in question AFAIK.

I am not asking about rumor. If they met up, someone stated that. I want to know what they said. If it's just a rumor then it's probably a lie.

I'm sorry to be misunderstanding you, GigTu. You were responding to a post about a "rumor" on FB that the man who is wanted (Hunter) had met up with Jeff on or about June 20, 2014. We have no information other than the rumor stated on that FB page. The person who posted that rumor works with an organization who helps with missing persons. He didn't say where he heard that rumor, but I would guess that the family heard it when they were in the area trying to get information about Jeff. It may have been third or fourth hand. We don't know if it's true or false at this point. But I'm sure the family would like this man found, so that he could be questioned about any contact he had with Jeff.

Just to be clear, Hunter is not on the most wanted list because of Jeff. It's Jeff's family who thinks he knows something.

The facts seem to be that Jeff arrived in California on 6/16/14 and visited with family until 6/20/14. On 6/20/14 Jeff left So Cal in a green 1998 Toyota Rav4 with an LSU sticker on the back window, heading for "farm" in Humboldt County (first Arcata, then on to Eureka).

On the morning of 6/21/14, Jeff checked his email and made a cell phone call around 7:30 a.m. The person called verified that Jeff was the person they spoke to, and that Jeff said he had driven all night, and was 'killing time while waiting to meet someone'. He apparently also stopped for a time in Sacramento. He later texted a friend in Louisiana.

Jeff's cell phone pinged near Williams, then off the Bloody Camp cell tower near Hoopa around 11:20 a.m. It was concluded that Jeff was heading to some property he leased downriver of Weitchpec. Jeff's brother was denied access by the tenants to search Jeff's property, so Sheriff's would need to get a warrant to search.

DID the property ever get searched? Did they ever find the vehicle?

To the best of my knowledge, after reviewing the FB page, the answer to both questions is "No."

I posted that the Sheriff would not search the property here at post #35 linked below. If they have searched since then, I haven't seen it mentioned. If anyone else on the thread has a different impression, please correct me.

I also find it disconcerting that the family is certain Jeff was slain and has stated such, without proof of any kind. If they are certain druggies killed Jeff in the woods that day, there is no real point to search for him - unless you are willing to grab a shovel and start working your way through Humboldt county.

Highlights from the article:
Family members have offered a $10,000 reward

Jeff is a former marijuana collective owner

Family have had no word from him nor has his green 1998 Toyota Rav4 been found.

Believed to have come to Humboldt County in order to do a marijuana deal and to check on a property he was leasing in the area.

The property was searched last year
There was no evidence of him having been there
The neighbors did not see him in the area at the time of his disappearance

In late Autumn the CHP did a flyover of the area in their helicopter and looked around for the car along the Klamath River between Cappell and Weitchpec

It was not located
The area is very rough and it's possible the vehicle is there but not observed

Cell phone info shows Jeff - or at least his phone - was in the area on 6/21/14

Locals who would have seen or spoken to him have "failed to respond" to numerous attempts to communicate with them

One individual is Robert Chris Hunter, who may have met with Jeff. The mug shot of a man is Robert Chris Hunter

Two other people who lived/worked this past year on the property that Jeff leased near Weitchpec are also important to speak to

One is Eliot Storms, a friend and business partner for over seven years

The other is Ben Rogers, someone Jeff knew in Louisiana and Humboldt.

Neither have responded at all to multiple attempts to communicate with them at the time of the article posting.

From following this case since the beginning and reading things on FB and LOCO that aren't allowed on the thread, I think the family has enough circumstantial evidence to be almost certain that Jeff is dead. They may not be able to find Jeff's remains, but I'm glad to see them searching for and pursuing potential criminal leads sooner than later, before the trail goes cold. Some families leave it to LE to find their missing loved one. I admire Jeff's family for hiring a PI and never giving up. JMO
