Judge: Oikos Shooter Not Competent to Stand Trial

An Alameda County court judge on Monday ruled that the Oikos shooter, who killed seven people and wounded three others in a shooting rampage at an Oakland university last year, is not competent to stand trial.

Judge Carrie Panetta ruled that One Goh will be sent to a mental institution until he is deemed competent to stand trial, which has an indefinite and unknown date.

He was ordered back to court on Jan. 15 to determine which institution he will go to. Usually, that is a facility in Napa. Every 90 days, his progress report will be reviewed.

In a procedural move, a man suspected of killing seven people in a shooting rampage at Oakland’s Oikos University in 2012 has been indicted on seven counts of murder and three counts of premeditated attempted murder, prosecutors said Monday.

However, doctors who examined 45-year-old One Goh recently have determined that he is still mentally incompetent to stand trial, according to Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Stacie Pettigrew. Goh didn’t attend his brief hearing on his case this afternoon in Alameda County Superior Court because he’s still being treated at Napa State Hospital...

The procedural move means that his case can go directly to trial without a preliminary hearing if he’s later found to be competent to stand trial.

The man charged with seven counts of murder and other charges for a shooting rampage at Oikos University in Oakland in 2012 has been restored to mental competency, the attorneys in his case said Friday.

However, the attorneys declined to comment on what the next step will be in the long-running legal odyssey for One Goh, 48, such as whether he will now stand trial.
