GUILTY CA - Shirley McGill, 55, beaten & strangled on cruise ship, 14 July 2009

I realize that defense attorneys have a job to protect their client(s), but if this man wanted to talk and seemed "adamant to say something", I wish they could allow him to speak out.

I'm curious because it does appear he feels bad about this, but strangulation isn't a quick crime. Even if he was under the influence of something, it takes some time and strength to strangle someone. Although I suppose the other reported injuries could have played a role in it.

McGill was indicted by a grand jury Wednesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Joanna Curtis said.

She said she did not pursue a first-degree murder charge, but because grand jury hearings are held in secret, she declined to discuss the evidence that led to her decision.

McGill waived his right to a detention hearing and was ordered held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego without bail. U.S. Magistrate Judge William McCurine Jr. scheduled a hearing for Monday to set further court dates for the case.

What does it mean if he "waived his right to a detention hearing"? I can't find a definition for "detention hearing", but does this mean he doesn't want to go forth and have a bail set? Sorry if that's a dumb question.

I'm curious because in so many cases we hear "I'm not guilty, etc..." and in this case it seems like this man is taking responsibility for the crime he committed. I just don't know what to think about it.

That's what i'm wondering too. it sounds like he is truly sorry and wants to be punished as he should be.

ETA: NOT that i'm saying cause he knows he's guilty and is very repentant that he sickens me even less, just saying, out of all the criminals I have a SMIDGEN (and not a bit more) of respect for him for wanting to say what happened and taking responsibility.

Robert McGill, 57, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in July...
