Australian man found dead alongside his girlfriend in Canada

Lucas Fowler was found dead alongside his girlfriend, US woman Chynna Deese, on a remote stretch of the Alaska Highway, British Columbia, just as they were about to set off on a road trip around the “top half of the globe”.

Ms Deese had reportedly left her home to visit Mr Fowler, who had been working at a ranch in Canada, when tragedy struck.

Mr Fowler is the son of senior NSW police officer Inspector Stephen Fowler.

Police name third victim, charge fugitive B.C. teens with murder

And the fugitive teens were formally charged Wednesday with the second-degree murder of Vancouver man Leonard Dyck, whose body was found July 19 near Dease Lake, more than 470 kilometres away from the first crime scene.

Dyck, who taught botany at the University of British Columbia and worked as a research associate in the school’s DeWreede Lab, was identified by police on Wednesday, two days after they released a composite sketch of the man in hopes that someone would recognize him.

"Social media is creating havoc for police in the massive cross-Canada manhunt for teenage murder suspects Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18.

Online speculation that the pair has crossed into Ontario from Manitoba has led to calls to police reporting possible sightings in nine different towns in the province, including at a Tim Hortons restaurant in Timmins.

While police are encouraging the public to continue calling in anything suspicious, Acting Sgt. Shona Camirand with the OPP in North Bay said social media users are taking things too far.

“I got a call saying, ‘How come there’s helicopters?’ Well, there is no helicopters, and there’s other reports on social media that someone had been shot and it’s just been blown out of proportion,” she said.

Residents across the province are on high alert, dialling 911 in a frantic race to be the ones who help catch the triple murder suspects from Vancouver Island whose last confirmed location was in Gillam, Man., 11 days ago.

But with no trace of the fugitives since then, paranoia about the duo crossing provincial borders into Ontario has merged with the age of social media, leading to mass speculation online that has dominated police calls during the past 24 hours.

Marc Depatie, a communications co-ordinator with the Timmins Police Service, said a man believed he saw the fugitives at a Tim Hortons near the town centre on Wednesday. “They called it in at 9:30 the next morning — 16 hours after the fact,” Depatie said.

Despite receiving dozens of tips, Camirand said there was nothing new to report and no confirmed sightings in Ontario.

“This is all stemming from one post from someone who listens to the police scanners,” she added."

Eerie final sighting of murdered Aussie

Authorities believe they were murdered after their van broke down on the Alaska Highway, 20km south of Liard Hot Springs.

Curtis Broughton, a mechanic from British Columbia, was one of the final people to see the couple alive when he noticed them on the side of the highway.

“Obviously their van had broken down, but they were still happy and smiling,” Mr Broughton told AAP.

The couple were found dead at the site hours later.

LAST PEOPLE TO SEE THEM

One of the last people to see the couple alive says they were smiling, relaxed and sitting in arm chairs on the side of a Canadian highway.

“Obviously their van had broken down, but they were still happy and smiling,” Curtis Broughton told AAP on Friday.

“They were having lunch or a bit of a meal when we pulled up.”

The couple were found dead at the site hours later.

“It was terrible,” Mr Broughton said, recalling how he later discovered on social media the couple was found dead.

“We were shocked.”

Mr Broughton, a mechanic, and his wife, Sandra, were driving home on Sunday about 3.20pm from a day visiting Liard Hot Springs, a remote area in northern British Columbia.

The Canadians saw the van had broken down on the highway and they stopped to offer help.

But after a quick chat with Mr Fowler he realised the young Australian had the problem under control.

“He seemed like he had everything diagnosed properly,” Mr Broughton said.

“The vehicle was flooded out and they were going to try and get it going again until they could get the parts they needed.”

The Broughtons got back in their car and drove home.

Mr Broughton said he did not notice anyone suspicious in the area when they stopped.

He called police as soon as he heard the horrifying news and realised he had spoken to the couple.

“We were shocked,” Mr Broughton said.
