A glass enclosed prisoner box is generally used for high profile trials such as this to ensure the safety of the prisoner.

That kinda sucks in a morally speaking kinda way. Simply my opinion but too bad that his victims were not given the same level of protection.

I know, I know. Innocent until proven guilty.

Presiding is Mr. Justice Robert Scott of Ontario Superior Court.

Timothy Appleby - Standing in the prisoner's box, the colonel is listening to the long list of break-and-enter charges. Each one is being read out separately, a process likely to take 10 or 15 minutes. He shows no emotion but simply stares at the floor.
Seated in the jury box are several of the detectives who took a role in the investigation, including Det. Inspector Chris Nicholas, who headed it.

Lianne Elliott:
The CBC's Dave Seglins says: Looking on are Belleville’s police Chief, OPP lead investigator Det. Insp. Chris Nicholas, as well as roughly 40 victims. Family members, including Williams’ second sexual assault victim Laurie Massicotte, are attending.

When Williams stood, and was arraigned on the counts of murder, he replied quietly, “Guilty your honour.” The second count of murder of Jessica Lloyd was read out, Williams was barely audible… and again said “Guilty, your honour.”

The brother and mother of Jessica Lloyd sat, staring at him, showing virtually no emotion, as Lloyd's mother held on to a large framed photo of her late daughter.

CBC:
Amber Hildebrandt reports: "An example of one of the charges we're hearing:

'... he did, on or about the 6th day of June 2008 at the municipality of Tweed, in the province of Ontario, break and enter a certain place to wit, a dwelling house, with intent to commit an indictable offence therein contrary to Section 348, subsection 1 A of the Criminal Code of Canada.'

The court official is reading fairly slowly, enunciating each word in each charge carefully."

TimothyAppleby - One concern raised by the judge was the possibility that some of the proceedings might be broadcast live by audio. He reiterated that that is not allowed, nor is the taking of any photographs or video inside the packed courtroom.

Hanging head

As the court clerk continues to read out the 86 separate charges of break and enter, theft, sexual assault and forcible confinement, Williams stands stiffly in the prisoner's box, as he has stood on parade so many time before in his military career. His head remains bowed.

His only movement has been to remove a tissue from his pocket and wipe his nose. Not his eyes, as many of his victims in court are.

TimothyAppleby - Every spot in the 153-seat courtroom is taken, with the media crush occupying close to half. The other big group, on the left hand side of the court, mostly comprises relatives and friends of murder victim Jessica Lloyd. Also on hand is Belleville Police Chief Cory McMullan.

Break and enter/theft charges are still being read out. We're at count 46 out of 82. Williams has been standing the whole time

The court is reading out the street names of the break-ins. They include Simoneau Way, Wilkie Drive and more.

Mapped

As the clerk continues her work reading the charges, a look around the courtroom shows rows of police officers along the walls, including Belleville's police chief Cory McMullan.

An officer sits on each side of the prisoner's box.

There are also two large maps placed on easels at the front of the room.

One is of the Bay of Quinte area where his spree started in 2007, the other of Ottawa where his burglaries continued.

Not a seat in the public gallery has gone unused.

Foreign media

Before the charge list was started (and it is still under way) the judge asked for any foreign reporters to identify themselves. A woman from NBC television stood up.
She was asked if she agreed to the restrictions on photographing or broadcasting anything in the courtroom. She agreed.

Judge Scott was concerned foreign media could be beyond punishment if they breached the prohibition.

[10:44 AM]
It has taken nearly 45 minutes to read the dozens of burglary, sexual assault and forcible confinement charges against Williams. When she’s finished, the clerk says: “David Russell Williams, how do you plead, guilty or not guilty?” “Guilty, your honour,” Williams answers. With that, he returns to his chair.
