CANADA Canada - Valerie Leblanc, 18, Gatineau QC, 23 Aug 2011

UPDATES re the unrelated case I posted yesterday (post #76)

-- Body found in downtown Ottawa parking lot

-- Dead woman's sister remembers her kindness

She was 23; she left home 7 years ago, so she left her home at 16! :(
The two things that shocks me the most in Canada is that children can leave their homes at 16, and police cannot do anything about it!
The other thing is that the age of consent is 14!!!!!
Who were the ___ that decided children are mature enough to make these kind of decisions? :maddening:

This is an unrelated case, which happened last night. Not the same area, but not that far, on the other side of the river.

The victim in this case has now been identified.

Leeanne Lawson was seen by a fellow Shepherd’s of Good Hope resident getting into a black SUV early Friday morning.

It was not too long after that Lawson, 23, was found dead by a police officer around 2:50 a.m. in a parking lot between La Nouvelle Scene, a theatre company, and a Hydro Ottawa substation on the east side of King Edward.

Lanthier said it was “hard to say” whether the man is dangerous.

The two officers warned people, especially women, to take precautions while walking in woods near the crime scene. They advised people to bring a whistle and a cellphone and tell someone where they’re going.

“Be careful, because the investigation is not over yet. Walk with somebody else, do not walk alone. If you see something, don’t hesitate to call the police force, 911. They’ll take it seriously,” Lanthier said.

So NOW they are saying that women should be vigilant! Yet, earlier on they said that the public shouldn't worry. It always bothers me when LE comes out of the gate, right after the crime, indicating that people shouldn't worry, or that the person is likely known to the victim. wouldn't they want to keep their options open? Shouldn't the public be made aware that LE really doesn't have a sense of who might have done this?

It reminds me of Audrey Gleave's case, where the police said something fairly soon after the crime, telling the neighbours not to worry, while here we are 8 months later with no suspect in sight.

I understand that they don't want to cause a panic, but wouldn't it be better for them to tell locals to err on the side of caution?

:waitasec: I am really confused about the BLACK SUV

Further down on the article, they mention a police BLACK SUV which is also seen in both videos. LE used that SUV to block the view, and also to transport LL's body.
At the very beginning of the second video clip, the fellow from Shepherd's of Good Hope says something about the black SUV. Perhaps you guys can catch what he is saying, because what I understand is he saw it with the lights "on" and that is when he noticed the yellow tape and the cop's car. IMO the very first line of the article could be a journalistic mistake. If he had actually witnessed her being 'picked up', then I don't think LE will allow him to talk to the media, all JMHO.
"the black SUV actually just cut through the traffic with its lights on; I happen to look down here, I saw the yellow tape, the cop car; got curious and walked down, and realized ..."

I don't want to go on too far a tangent from Valerie's case. Should we set up a separate thread for Leeanne?

Regarding the black SUV, I think the vehicle seen by the witness from The Good Shepherd's and the black SUVs that are LE-related are separate and distinct.

Hazel, thanks for pointing out the videos associated with the article. In the first video I noticed the red tent, referred to by others, as being right beside where Leeann's body was found. To have her body found within a couple of feet of this homeless person's tent can't be pure coincidence. I had read that, but until I visually saw the relative location, well, I just don't think it can be unrelated. Such an awkward spot.

Sure Snoopster, please go ahead and open a separate thread for Leeanne. It doesn't appear to be related to Valerie. The reason I posted about it here, is the proximity (about 12 minutes away), and the timing. Not something that happens often in these areas. Also,

A 36-year old woman is missing in Gatineau. Just created a thread for her:

Investigators say at this point there doesn't seem to be a connection to other cases, including that of 18-year-old Valerie LeBlanc whose body was found two weeks ago behind her school in Hull.

Just posting this much older link because some of the details are different - from the more recent (and accurate?) ones reported.

"Two students found the body around 4 p.m. Tuesday near the bike path behind the school's Campus Gabrielle-Roy.

Josianne Tardif was having a cigarette on the path with her friends when they came upon the body.

"She was lying down on her front, her legs were broken," said Tardif, "at the time we didn't believe it was real."

The pair originally thought the body was a mannequin, until they moved closer and decided to call police.

"We kind of smelled the dead body burning, that's when we realized what you saw. It was really excruciating," she said"

"Sgt. J.P. Le May and Const. Pierre Lanthier said the witness they were looking for was a white man in his 20s with short black hair, no facial hair and a chubby build."

"Le May and Lanthier said the main witness was not currently considered a suspect, but police wanted to talk to him to determine whether he was involved in the murder or saw someone who was."

OTTAWA - Gatineau, Que., police are following up on new leads in the homicide of 18-year-old Valerie Leblanc.

Officers returned to the crime scene behind the CEGEP Outaouais campus on Wednesday, and are also searching a wooded area about a kilometre south near Heritage College.

Cops received some tips about tents set up in the area, which isn't a camping ground.

However, at this point, he said police don't know if the tents are connected to the case.

"The fact it's a murder scene — we take all the tips very seriously," he said.

Adding this here so as not to have too many posts in row (as usual, sorry)

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Crime/2011/09/07/18651621.html?cid=rssnewscanadaWitnesses identified him as having a "decisive walk," said Gatineau police spokesman J. P. Lemay.

"It's not as if he was wandering or taking his time."

The man is described as white, in his 20s, 6-feet tall and about 200 lbs. He has a chubby face, pointy nose and pointed chin. He has short, black hair and olive skin. He's said to have a belly and a strong but not athletic build.

Unrelated??
GATINEAU, Que. — The bodies of two men and a woman were found in a Gatineau, Que., home on Friday night, and police were treating the deaths as suspicious

"Police released few details beyond saying that the three people were related and that the bodies had been taken to hospital, where the people were pronounced dead on arrival.

However, a neighbour, Pierre Crete, said two of the people in the house were a married couple, both of whom had children by previous marriages. He said that the woman had an adult son in his 30s.

"It's very sad that these things happen," said another neighbour, Monique Sabourin, describing the street she has lived for nearly 30 years as "really quite quiet."

The deaths add another investigation to the case file of Gatineau homicide investigators

http://www.citytv.com/toronto/cityn...ually-assaulted-police-looking-for-3-suspects
This event took place in Durham region Ontario and although too far to be related (I think),it might be prudent to post here (and in SV thread).

Durham Regional police are looking for three men after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted during her lunch break.

The teen attends Sinclair High School in Whitby and was eating her lunch in a park near Lazio Street and Samandria Avenue around 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

She told police two of the three men dragged her into a wooded area. One of them then grabbed the knife from her lunch bag and cut her clothing. At least one of the men then sexually assaulted her. She told police she lost consciousness at one point. When she regained consciousness, she walked back into the park. A telephone technician who was working in the area saw her and called police.

An area resident was taking her garbage out at the time of the alleged attack, and saw the terrified 16-year-old.

OTTAWA – Gatineau police were back in the woods behind the school where they found Valerie Leblanc’s beaten and burned remains on Aug. 23 as the investigation continued Wednesday.

Police are still without a suspect three weeks after the 18-year-old CEGEP student was murdered. On Sept. 1, they released a description of a man they referred to as a main witness, who was seen walking with a mountain bike on a path behind the school around the time Leblanc’s remains were found.

Police say they’ve received dozens of tips since releasing the description, but are still looking for the man

About 500 people attended last night [Friday, Sept. 9th] a torch-lit march in honor of Valerie Leblanc.
Lanterns in their hands, they marched one by one on the path that was fatal to the young college student,
murdered in the woods three weeks ago behind the Gabrielle-Roy campus of Cégep de l'Outaouais.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2011/09/19/ottawa-gatineau-teen-murder-sketch.html
On Sept. 1, police released a description of a possible witness in the case, but did not reveal a sketch of that person. It is not known if the sketch they are working on is of that same man.

The witness is described as a white man in his 20s, about six feet tall and 200 pounds, with a chubby face and pot belly, short black hair, no facial hair and a tall, chubby build. He also had a summer tan "with a particular olive complexion."

Officers have also not ruled out that male witness as a suspect.

An autopsy showed Leblanc died from severe head trauma, but her body was also found burned

A hotline is still setup at 819-243-2346 (ext. 6677), for anyone with information related to the investigation

Police in Gatineau, Que., say they are working on a composite sketch of someone connected to the murder of 18-year-old Valérie Leblanc.

The force said it received new tips about her murder over the weekend that will help nail down a better description of the suspect.

A hotline is still setup at 819 - 243 - 2346 (ext. 6677), for anyone with information related to the investigation.

Today.
Gatineau police spokesman Pierre Lanthier said it took police three weeks to hand over the file because they received new information after making the announcement.

“It’s not each day you see a file like that,” he said. “They want to make sure they have all the details.”

Lanthier would not say what the nature of the new information was.
