GUILTY CO - The Diol Family, 5 Killed in Arson Fire by Masked Suspects, Denver, 5 Aug 2020 *minors arrested* *1 minor guilty*

Two new articles...

Woman arrested during fire probe pleads not guilty to drug, weapons charges

At Wednesday's hearing, prosecutors said they have not seen evidence to support Tanya Bui's claims that she works at her father's accounting firm and that she is a college student. Mix noted she finds it suspicious that Tanya Bui owns a Lexus and a Tesla even though she does not have reported income from "legitimate" sources.

2) Diol family killed: Teen arson suspects due in court | 9news.com

snippet:
Seymour appeared next for a hearing by video and was also advised of the charges against him. His defense attorney said they've filed a motion requesting a reverse transfer hearing. That is essentially a mini-trial where evidence is presented before a judge who will determine if the case should move back to juvenile court instead of adult court.

Both teens have status hearings set for late next week.

This article tells how Denver police left no stone unturned and found the arsonists

Teen charged in deadly Green Valley Ranch arson told investigators he set fire because of stolen phone, detective says

The detective’s testimony Friday was the first time investigators have publicly described how they identified the suspects in the case and what they believed motivated the suspects to allegedly set fire to the home.

"On the day of the fire, investigators obtained surveillance video from a neighbor’s house showing three people in hooded sweatshirts and full-face masks near the home at the time of the fire. They were also able to find surveillance images of a car they suspected was connected to the fire as it moved through the neighborhood.

But for weeks investigators remained stumped on how to identify the masked individuals. A series of search warrants served on cellphone and tech companies led investigators to identify the three teens, court testimony showed.

The first warrant asked for cell tower data from all the major phone companies. The companies turned over data for all phone calls made or received in a one-mile radius of the house from 2 a.m. to 2:40 a.m. the night of the fire, as well as all devices connected to the network in that area in that time period.

Investigators received anonymized data on more than 7,000 devices that met those parameters. To narrow that down, they used a cell-site simulator to attempt to determine which mobile devices are normally found in the vicinity, thus eliminating neighbors from the data pool.

That eliminated hundreds of devices from the pool of potential suspects. Investigators then requested individual location data from all of the remaining phones and compared it with the path of the suspect car seen the night of the fire, eliminating any that did not match the movement of the vehicle.

That brought their pool down to 33 devices, one of which was registered to Bui’s sister, Tanya Bui. Federal prosecutors charged Tanya Bui with drug and gun trafficking crimes two days after her brother’s arrest and texts between the siblings included in court filings show that Kevin Bui frequently dealt drugs at his sister’s request.

A separate warrant to Google asked for any searches for the destroyed house’s address anytime in the two weeks before the fire. Google provided five accounts that made that search — including three accounts with email addresses that included Kevin Bui, Seymour and the juvenile’s names.

Investigators then requested all data related to their texts, social media accounts and iCloud storage, eventually using the location data to show the teens’ phones moving from Lakewood to the Truckee Street area at the time of the fire.

Baker also tracked down the purchase of the three masks worn by the suspects. He called Party City asking for Colorado purchase data for the type of masks investigators believed were worn by the suspects. That data pointed to a shop in the Belmar area and Baker found video surveillance outside of the shop that showed a car park just before the time of the purchase and drive away just after. The car in the video matched the car seen in the burned house’s vicinity the night of the fire.

Baker then visited the home of Bui, who had been identified as a suspect through the data searches, and saw a car matching the same description in the driveway.

...Cellphone data also showed the three teens looked at news stories about the arson the next day, he said"

Good police work!

Another interesting thing about Tanya Bui.

https://www.thedenverchannel.com/ne...mily-arrested-on-federal-drug-weapons-charges

The fact that she was paying for her brother's phone and that she had a huge database of customers, makes me wonder if the main goal was not revenge, but physically destroying that phone, that the arsonists wrongly determined to be in the house, since it contained some information important for these criminals/drug and gun dealers? Destroying own database.

This is the only explanation as to why they did not even check who lived in the house. They didn't care. They needed to get rid of that phone that they thought was there. JMO.

Wow. I knew that data was out there (like whose phone pinged in target area and who googled an address in the two weeks before a murder) but I had heard mixed things on how much of that data LE could obtain. Glad they got access!

I am glad, too. I understand, it was a loud case. After all, the president of Senegal got involved, and the whole Muslim community of Denver.

However, it was also an unbelievably vile case. To take revenge on the people not even involved (and even if they were - 5 lives, two babies, for a phone??). And didn't they know how inaccurate "find my phone" is? It is all horrible, and I am glad that the rascals are prosecuted as adults.

Well they have gone from small time dealers to murderers. Quite a jump.

I agree, it is quite a jump.

But.... I think such jumps occur tragically often under the following circumstances:

- Largely street level dealers manage to make a few very junior wholesale level sales. They then want to make the jump to wholesaling increasingly larger amounts.

- They conclude that over the top violence over small stakes is the SOP of the "Big Boys"- 'coz thats what they do the in the movies and rap videos.

- As they are inexperienced and un-mentored, their over the top violence is also clumsy, very clumsy.

Thrilled to see this case has been solved!!! Thanks everyone for the updates. Bringing forward Media Timeline to update when I can:

Wrongful death lawsuit filed in fatal arson that killed 5 family members at Denver home

“A man whose wife and infant daughter died when a fire was intentionally set in the middle of the night at a Green Valley Ranch home in 2020 filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the three suspects arrested in the case.

The civil lawsuit filed in Denver District Court on Aug. 8 names Kevin Bui, Gavin Seymour, and a third teen who was 15 at the time of the fire and is charged in juvenile court.

In addition to the suspects, Amadou Beye is also suing the parents of the suspects and the homeowner.”

That family of the victims don't sound too happy. It is understandable.

The criminal cases against the two other teen suspects — Gavin Seymour and Kevin Bui, who both were charged as adults — are on hold until May, when the Colorado Supreme Court is expected to review the constitutionality of a search warrant that was critical to identifying them as suspects.

Two other juvenile defendants are being prosecuted in Denver District Court as the cases remain ongoing.

It will be interesting to see what the Colorado Supreme Court says about the search warrant.

A Colorado teenager has been jailed for 40 years for burning a baby, toddler and three adults alive in their home in a horrific arson attack.

Gavin Seymour, now 19, was 16 when he started a house fire that killed five Senegalese family members in Green Valley Ranch, Denver on August 5, 2020.

He pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was given the maximum sentence he could face in Denver District Court on Friday.

Seymour apologized in court on Friday and said: 'If I could go back and prevent all this I would.

'There is not a moment that goes by that I don’t feel extreme guilt and remorse for my actions. …I want to say how truly sorry I am to the family members and community for all the harm I’ve done.'

Beye addressed Seymour in court and said: 'I hope when you die you will die slow and hard.
