I have been silent 'til now. I have nothing to say. I've been in prayer for all the victims, the Holmes family included (although I can't yet bring myself to say a prayer for the monster).
I have two thoughts.
1. The "call." I have an alarm on my phone, and it can sound just like the rings on a cell phone. I have 10 choices that came with my phone, and who knows how many others can be easily purchased.
My point is this. Just because a cell phone puts out a noise, doesn't mean someone's calling. I think that he did not take a call, but that his alarm rang, he mimed taking the call, as an excuse to go to the door and start the ball rolling.
2. His mother may have been misunderstood when she said "you've got the right person." It took very little time after my father's death for the phone to start ringing. I spoke with many folks who called and asked "is this the daughter of So and So?" Thankfully, they were usually satisfied with me saying "yes, this is she." But I can easily see the conversation going something like this:
(THE FOLLOWING IS PURE CONJECTURE)
Phone rings, Mom answers sleepily, considering the time the shooting occurred.
Rep: Hello, I'm from ABC Colorado. I'm calling about the shooting in the theatre.
Mom: What shooting? Where?
Rep: The shooting at the theatre in Colorado. There's been an arrest, and the suspect is James Holmes. Do you know him?
Mom: I'm sorry, I'm asleep...what?
(Reporter gives a fast briefing as to what's happened).
Rep: Are you his related? His paperwork has this number on it, and we're trying to verify if you're the same person as on his contact info. Are you his mother?
Mom: you've got the right person. I've got to go call the police, I've got to go to Colorado.
End scenario.
See, it may have happened like that. She may not have meant "you've got the right person in jail for this monstrous thing", she may have meant "yes, I'm the right person you're looking for."
And then again, she may have said that he was the right person. It's just that the statement can be seen several ways, and I hate to be angry at someone for a potential misstatement during what is probably one of the most traumatic moments in their life.
And I got nothing else. Just that my prayers are with everyone - everyone - involved...the victims, the people who've lost their lives, all the families, the LE and the Fire/Rescue who attended those at the scene, the hospital staff...and my prayers will continue for a long, long while.
Rest peacefully, those who have died. And know that you, in the loss of your life, have made an impact on the entire world.
