UT Dylan Rounds, 19, Lucin - Box Elder County **5/28/22** Missing! Media, Maps, Timelines *NO DISCUSSION*

6/23/22

Dylan Rounds, 19, was last seen at the end of May, say his parents and local authorities in Box Elder County, Utah. He last spoke to his grandmother on May 28, but after no one heard from him the next day, his family drove from Idaho to his Lucin, Utah, property to check on him, according to his parents, who were quoted in an East Idaho News report from Wednesday. He was gone. There was no activity on his phone or bank account, they said.

What they did find, however, where his boots. The footwear was yards away from his grain truck in the opposite direction of his RV camper. It had a spot of blood in it. Mother Candice Cooley called this “bizarre” because her son was always particular about the kinds of boots he wore from a young age.

“At that point, it should have been treated as foul play,” she told NewsNation. “You just don’t see someone’s boots in the desert that’s missing.”

She also said that his key fob was missing.

Lucin, Utah, is in the western part of the state, near the border with Nevada.

An FBI spokesperson confirmed to East Idaho News that they are helping Box Elder County deputies with the investigation. Cooley has welcomed the agency’s presence, saying there was a lot of progress since it got involved the week of June 14. But she criticized Box Elder authorities, saying they provided spotty support to the family in the early days of the search.

“When Box Elder County came out, they came out Monday, May 30,” she said, later saying investigators left after dark. “And they did a good job. Don’t get me wrong, especially volunteers. They did a good job. But by the next day, when they come out and the sheriffs and everybody came back out, it was around 2, 3 in the afternoon — they called it. They literally left our family out in the the desert to figure out what happened.”

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah) – There is a growing rift between Dylan Rounds’ family and the private investigator hired to find him.

The dissension has grown to the point Candice Cooley is now talking with an attorney to consider their options.

[..]

The private investigator, James Terry was hired by Dylan’s grandparents to find out what happened to him.

Terry who is from Mississippi has gone on several Youtube channels and radio talk shows expressing his theories behind Dylan’s disappearance.

“The details of this case which I was verified finally last night by several callers on radio shows have now vindicated me from some of the things I’ve been saying,” Terry said in an interview with ABC4.

[..]

But the social media chatter by the private investigator has Dylan’s mother upset and they’ve now cut ties with him.

“This guy has taken this story and all the information we’ve given him,” said Cooley. “He has not collected it himself, and has twisted it into this sick and disgusting plot that he has changed three times.”

[..]

Terry who is not licensed in Utah said he was hired by the grandparents who live in Idaho. He said Idaho doesn’t require a license. Unlike law enforcement which keeps information secret, Terry has gone public on social media.

[..]

But Cooley claimed Dylan’s grandparents no longer want him on the case either.

“I want to collect the reward,” he said.

[..]

But his style doesn’t fit with Cooley and her family.

“Dylan’s not here to defend himself,” said Cooley. “And Dylan is not a … Trust me.

Cooley and her family now have a $100,000 reward offered to anyone who knows his whereabouts and if it involves a criminal act, obtain a conviction.

"Dylan was out building his life," his mom Candice Cooley tells PEOPLE. "His lifelong dream was to have his own farm. He has spent the last two summers ripping out and redeveloping that ground on his own. He got his water rights. He did everything. And this year his grain was finally coming up. He finally got a crop. He got his pivot up. It was a fully functional farm."

And then he disappeared.

[..]

Cooley adds that the key fob to his pickup was also missing and the truck was locked. "Dylan never locks anything," she says. "And his pistol's gone. As hard as it is, and as much as I hate to say it, I'm about 99 percent sure somebody murdered my son."

[..]

"If somebody is involved with Dylan's disappearance, they need to know we're not going to go away," Box Elder County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Cade Palmer told Fox News Digital. "If this takes months, if it takes years, we'll keep knocking on doors."

"If he was OK, then he should have turned up by now," Palmer said, according to Fox News Digital. "So we can't rule out that he's not OK, or that somebody may have been involved in his disappearance."

IDAHO FALLS — The family of a missing man from eastern Idaho is demanding a private investigator stop his involvement in the search for their son.

[..]

James Terry with Gulf Coast Investigation in Florida has been investigating the case, but on Thursday, Idaho Falls-based attorney Ronald Swafford sent Terry a cease-and-desist letter on behalf of Rounds’ parents, Justin Rounds and Candice Cooley.

“My office has been retained by the Rounds and Cooley families to send this letter to you and demand that you immediately cease and desist your continued nonauthorized involvement in the Dylan Rounds case,” Swafford wrote. “You have made malicious, unfounded and incorrect statements and have made verbal and written attacks on the Rounds and Cooley families.”

Terry has spoken about the case on videos posted online, and Swafford wrote that Terry’s words are “damaging the integrity and effectiveness of the entire investigation.”

[..]

Rounds’ parents say they are focused on finding their son and don’t want Terry’s private investigation to be a distraction.

Meanwhile, the family of Dylan have issued a cease and desist order against James Terry, the private investigator hired by Dylan’s grandparents.

[..]

Dylan’s mother said the letter was sent to two different emails associated with him but was not delivered because the address was not valid. In response, James Terry told ABC4 that he had not been served. He said he moves around the country and doesn’t have a valid email address.

“If you can’t find me, you can’t serve me,” Terry told ABC4.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 Utah) – At least three people have now been questioned by authorities in the Dylan Rounds missing persons case.

All have criminal records. One was indicted on unrelated charges, the other is in custody on an outstanding warrant and the third remains a free man.

[..]

And nightly, social media web sleuths are hosting podcasts that attract hundreds of callers, some from Dylan’s neighbors. On True Crime with Jess she interviewed Curtis Wadsworth who was friends with Dylan. He considered him a good friend.

“(Dylan’s) a hard-working young kid who had a dream and asked me to be involved in it,” Wadsworth said on the podcast. “(I worked) as a backhoe operator is all.”

Wadsworth lives in the town of Montello, Nevada about 30 miles from Lucin in Box Elder County. Dylan operated his own farm near Lucin. Wadsworth told listeners the 19-year-old would sometimes stay at his mobile trailer. He is angry that people are linking him to his disappearance.

Utah authorities have named a suspect in the unsolved disappearance of 19-year-old farmer Dylan Rounds, who was last heard from on May 28 when he told his grandmother he needed to get his grain truck out of the rain.

James Brenner, 58, is being held at the Weber County Jail on federal firearms charges, according to authorities.

Candice Cooley, Rounds’ mother, told Fox News Digital on Thursday that the newly named suspect is an "acquaintance" of her son.

[..]

Brenner is described in court documents as a neighbor and "family friend" of Rounds who police say was squatting in a trailer on land where deputies found the missing teen’s boots and grain truck. His past criminal history includes malicious wounding, malicious shooting and three prior convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm, court records show.

"The defendant has no work history and is currently unemployed and has no verifiable residence," court documents state. "The defendant was trespassing and squatting on property."

IDAHO FALLS — Law enforcement and the family of Dylan Rounds are asking the public to avoid searching for the missing man around his farm near the Utah/Nevada border.

Rounds vanished over a month ago while farming in the rural town of Lucin, Utah – around 15 miles from the state border with Nevada. The 19-year-old, who attended Rigby High School before moving, last spoke with his grandmother on May 28. Since then, nobody has heard from him, and other than a pair of Rounds’ boots on the property, there has been no sign of him anywhere.

The Box Elder County Utah Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into Rounds’ disappearance. The FBI and Elko County Nevada Sheriff’s Office are assisting.

While a handful of public searches were held in early June, investigators are asking people to refrain from visiting the desert area.

“The law enforcement investigation into the disappearance of Dylan Rounds is ongoing,” the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post says. “Law enforcement continues to be in the Lucin area. At this time there are no organized searches planned for members of the public to participate in that are supported or authorized by law enforcement. We are asking the public to not search the area, as it has the potential to compromise the investigation.”

[..]

“As a family, we are not asking for or requesting any additional public searches for Dylan Rounds at this time. We request that everyone allow law enforcement to continue their organized investigation without any hindrance or interference, in order to avoid jeopardizing the investigation. We thank everyone for their continued support in finding Dylan Rounds,” the statement said.

ELKO – Law enforcement from two states searched the Nevada property of a man who has been named as a suspect in the disappearance of a 19-year-old Utah man nearly 12 weeks ago.

The Elko County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office with the search warrant Monday on a parcel of land owned by James A. Brenner. They were hoping to locate information that would lead to the location of Dylan Rounds, a Utah farmer who was reported missing at the end of May.

Personnel from the two departments used advanced searching methods, which included cadaver dogs, drones, and archaeological excavation procedures to process Brenner’s property. No items of interest or evidence was discovered on the property during the search, stated the ECSO.

[..]

Brenner is currently in the Weber County Jail on the earlier firearms charges and an assault charge, reported ABC News in Salt Lake City.

Kelly also said they had tipped the FBI about something odd on Brenner’s property.

“What I saw there (Brenner property) when we showed up was the burnt frame of his trailer,” Kelly said. “There was clearly an explosion. We walked a little bit further and my wife noticed two shovels. One of them sticking straight up out of the ground and next to the shovels were two depressions of dirt where someone had clearly been digging and had filled them back in and near one of the depressions was a pick ax.”

He said they documented the area and forwarded what they found to the FBI. It may have been the probable cause needed for authorities to convince a Nevada judge to sign off on the warrant.
