GUILTY FL - Officers Jeffrey Kocab, 31, & David Curtis, 31, slain, Tampa, 29 June 2010

Accused cop killer Dontae Morris denied bond at 1st court appearance

TAMPA - Nearly 12 hours after he turned himself in, accused killer Dontae Morris went before Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Paul Huey for his official first appearance.

Morris is accused of shooting Tampa Police officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis to death on June 29. He is also accused of killing Derek Anderson in May.

Saturday morning, Morris was the last inmate on the court docket to be called.

After 79 inmates had their first appearances and the jail courtroom at Orient Road Jail was cleared out, five deputies escorted Morris in. He wore an orange jail uniform and stood quietly. Deputies said this was done to prevent Morris from interacting with other inmates.

Hillsborough County Public Defender Chuck Traina talked with Morris briefly before the hearing started.

Traina told the judge he needed to request that another public defender represent Morris, because a conflict of interest.

Cortnee Brantley, Traina said, was someone he'd already worked with a few days ago, during the days police questioned her and searched for Morris. Police say Brantley was in the same car as Morris the night the officers were murdered.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said Friday that Brantley will face a federal charge of witnessing a crime and not reporting it.

Believing that he'll likely represent Brantley in her federal court case, Traina brought up the issue. The judge approved the request, asked him to address the issue with the Office of Regional Council.

Then, after reading the charges, three counts of murder in the first degree and two counts of a felon in possession of a firearm, Judge Huey ordered Morris to stay in jail without bond.

Crowds stream in to pay respects to slain officers

LUTZ –– Hundreds of people streamed into Idlewild Baptist Church Friday evening to pay their respects to slain Tampa police officers David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab.

The crowd included many uniformed officers from points as far away as Charlotte, N.C.

The caskets were open for both Curtis and Kocab, and their families sat close by in the front row. The group of relatives included Kocab's wife, Sara Kocab, who was accompanied by Pastor Jeff Howell of Church on the Rock in Plant City.

Gov. Charlie Crist paid his respects to both families of both officers. Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio stood in a corner with police Chief Jane Castor as hundreds of Tampa police officers flowed in, some of them crying and hugging each other.

At the jail, the two Tampa police cars were met by a tactical team of detention deputies. Neither Brantley, who wore blue jeans and a black T-shirt that said "Loser Machine," nor Morris answered reporters' questions or said anything.

They were led to a property desk, where their personal items were catalogued. They were then taken to a medical station before being then fingerprinted and photographed.

Morris was sent to an isolation cell in Unit 5 — the same cell block that houses Humberto Delgado, who is awaiting trial in last year's shooting death of Tampa police Cpl. Mike Roberts. Morris will be kept on 23-hour lockdown, jail officials said.

This whole story is devastating -- the aunt of the perp ''worked against the investigation'' and has been fired from the Tampa Police Department --- sad day for Tampa

Poor Sara. How much heartache can one heart sustain? Even if it was expected, it is devastating nonetheless on top of losing her husband. My heart just breaks for her.

amazing this witness was allowed in court dressed like this!

Case just went to jury. I pray for justice for the two young officers and their families and the other people affected by the three other killings this defendant has been tied to. If he gets the death penalty I assume the State will hold off putting the other victims' family/friends through the ordeal of a trial.
