A waitress' quick thinking and empathy may have indirectly saved the life of a young boy.

Timothy Lee Wilson II was been found guilty by a six-person Orange County, Florida, jury after two hours of deliberations.

His crimes included two counts of false imprisonment of a child under 13 years of age, three counts of aggravated child abuse with a weapon, four counts of aggravated child abuse, and one count of child neglect, according to an announcement made today by Ninth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Monique H. Worrell.

I was looking for something, and by chance came across this case for the first time. It shocked me.

This article from Jan. 2021 has the press conference detailing the actions of the server Flavaine Carvalho.
She speaks, as does the owner of the restaurant.

I was in tears. This boy would have died at the hands of his step father, and mother, if it were not for her. She details how it was like divine intervention that she was able to save this boy, given that she was not supposed to be working that day, the particular time, the location of the table, and the fact that she could message the boy without the parents seeing. The boy was wearing a hoodie, a mask, glasses, and gloves, yet she was observant enough to notice a scratch, and bruises on the side of his eye and on the 2 inches visible of his arm.
She had already had a feeling something was off, the boy not eating, and his quiet demeanor. Her persistence in "seeing", and then acting, is not what everyone would do.

And though she is hailed as a hero (which she is) she instead praises the boy for his courage.
