Autopsy: Nevaeh possibly buried alive
Autopsy report says Monroe girl died after inhaling dirt
Wednesday, July 15, 2009

The office received the autopsy results from the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office on Tuesday.
"The autopsy results have revealed that Nevaeh's death was caused by aspiration of (dirt)," according to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. "This means that Nevaeh's face was forcibly maintained or embedded into a dirt surface. Whether this resulted from another person forcibly pressing her face into dirt or whether she was buried alive could not be determined."
Mike Buchanan, Nevaeh's uncle, said the family has been in rare contact with authorities since Nevaeh's funeral. He said he last spoke with Monroe County Sheriff's Office officials the day after the funeral.
"I haven't heard nothing from any of them. I don't know how to take it," said Buchanan who spoke to The News before he found out about the results of the autopsy report. "There's a lot of stuff swirling around, but we're only waiting for the truth. It's difficult to talk about it."
Two men, both sex offenders, were arrested. One of the men questioned by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is George Kennedy, who had served time for having sex with a 15-year-old girl. Nevaeh's mother and Kennedy had dated before they became close friends. Kennedy, who remains a person of interest in the case, is in custody on a parole violation. Roy Lee Smith, another person of interest in the case, also is in custody for violating parole because of his contact with Nevaeh.

Was Nevaeh buried alive?
Autopsy results show 5-year-old died after inhaling dirt

Nevaeh's aunt, Diana Lawson, confirmed that the family had been told by police that the girl might have been alive when she was placed in a shallow grave along the River Raisin in Raisinville Township.
"It's the worst nightmare," Lawson told the Free Press. "All we can do is take it one step at a time."
Testing on the girl's body, including her lungs, shows that she died after inhaling dirt.
Authorities previously reported that she had no outward signs of trauma that illuminated how she died. Investigators have received only partial results of tests the Michigan State Police crime lab conducted on evidence from the grave site.
Nevaeh's mother and grandmother, Jennifer and Sherry Buchanan, are heartbroken, Lawson said.

UPDATE: Nevaeh may have been buried alive
Girl, 5, died of asphyxiation, inhaled dirt, autopsy shows
Article published July 15, 2009

Diana Lawson, Nevaeh's great-aunt, said detectives went yesterday to the Food Town in Monroe where her sister Sherry Buchanan works to discuss the autopsy findings. "They said to her Nevaeh was buried alive," Ms. Lawson said. "She had a little dirt in her throat. She didn't suffer anything."
Mr. Lawson said that state taxpayers will end up footing the bill if the killer or killers are arrested and convicted.
"This guy, if they catch him, will end up getting three meals a day and watching cable TV," he said. "The person needs to be caught. That is the main thing. Until the person is caught, every child in this community is in danger."
When asked if there was any solace to autopsy findings that Nevaeh may have died unconscious and didn't suffer trauma, Mr. Lawson said: "It makes it worse. She was buried alive. That's got to be the cruelest way to go - to have all that fear in you when you are dying."
Sheriff Crutchfield said "We continue to interview people daily. We are working on tips and they lead us to other tips. We have to clarify those tips and move on," the sheriff said.
Sheriff Crutchfield said testing being conducted at the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory on evidence recovered at the gravesite is ongoing. He refused to comment on what was found at the scene.

According to a statement from the sheriff's office: "The autopsy results have revealed that Nevaeh's death was caused by aspiration of fine particulate material (dirt). This means that Nevaeh's face was forcibly maintained or embedded into a dirt surface. Whether this resulted from another person forcibly pressing her face into dirt or whether she was buried alive could not be determined. Toxicology was noncontributory."
Tuesday night some of her family and friends gathered at the Charlotte Arms apartments where Nevaeh was last seen.
"I really don't feel relieved yet, I want to know who the killers are, if they're still out there. The only thing I can say to them is that we've gotten this far, a step closer and before we know it we will see you in court and we will ask you why you did what you did," said Nevaeh's great aunt Diana Lawson.
"Now knowing that they've found more information, they need to just go find some more and hopefully catch whoever did it and if they're watching, they need to tell them what they did," said Buchanan family friend Dorothy Morse.

Autopsy results on Nevaeh Buchanan

Shock and anger spread through the Charlotte Arms apartment complex as word got out of how Nevaeh died. Detectives with the Monroe County sheriff's department spoke with Nevaeh's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, explaining the autopsy results.
The girl's cause of death has been ruled asphyxiation by the medical examiner. She died after inhaling dirt. According to the Monroe County sheriff's department, whether this resulted from another person forcibly pressing her face into dirt or whether she was buried alive could not be determined. But family members say investigators told Jennifer that Nevaeh was buried alive. There is no word yet if there was any evidence of sexual assault.
"The fact that Nevaeh was buried alive is gut wrenching. It's hard to even explain the thoughts of what she had to go through," says Nevaeh's cousin Shaun Lawson.
The sheriff's department is waiting more results from the Michigan state police crime lab on the analysis of evidence recovered at the gravesite. Investigators continue to request and follow up on tips from the public. Still no suspects have been identified.

Nevaeh may have been buried alive

The Monroe County Sheriff Office says Nevaeh Buchanan was either buried alive along the River Raisin or had her face pressed into dirt suffocating her to death.
The statement came Tuesday as autopsy results came back indicating the 5-year-old girl died as a result of suffocating after inhaling dirt.
Nevaeh went missing from in front of her Monroe apartment building May 24. Her body was found nearly two weeks later buried in a shallow grave along the River Raisin, just miles from her home. Her body was found crudely covered in cement by two men fishing along the river.
Monroe County officials say they are still pursuing all tips and leads in the case. No arrests have been made.

In mid-June the assembled task force, headed up by the Monroe County Sheriff, Michigan State Police, and the FBI, received more than 1,200 tips regarding the case.
The task force is requesting anyone who has fished in and around the River Raisin in Raisinville Township where Nevaeh's body was located, or saw any vehicles or people in that area, to call the (734) 243-7070 tip line.

Sheriff Bouchard on WJR: Nevaeh Buchanan's murder will haunt community
Wednesday July 15, 2009, 7:58 AM
<snipped>
Oakland County Sheriff and gubernatorial candidate Michael Bouchard says Nevaeh Buchanan's murder will likely haunt the Monroe community, family, and officers for the rest of their lives.
"It's something that will stick with you because it's just not something that's human to be able to do that to a young child," Bouchard told Paul W. Smith this morning on WJR AM-760.
As Oakland County Sheriff, Bouchard is not directly involved in the case in Monroe, but said he's willing to lend resources to Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield if needed.
But he speaks from experience, having worked a child killer case in the '70s.
"I know one of the very first cases I worked on was the Oakland County child killer where four children were murdered and it still haunts me — and everybody that worked on it in and the community — to this day."
Bouchard is running for governor of Michigan.

Relative: Where is Nevaeh Buchanan's mother?
5 -year-old's great-aunt hasn't seen Jennifer Buchanan in days
July 15, 2009
Updated at 12:02 p.m.

Diana Lawson, who lives in the same building as Jennifer Buchanan, said she last saw her niece three or four days ago.
“I don’t know where she’s at right now,” Lawson said this morning. “She could be with friends. She could be anywhere.”
Meanwhile, neighbors say investigators snipped pieces of carpet from a nearby apartment last week to see if fibers match those found under the little girl’s fingernails.
Aaron Baker said today that officers cut out a piece of the tan carpet from the apartment where his 8-year-old son, Austin, played with Nevaeh just hours before the little girl disappeared.
“That way they had something to run a test on,” he said from the apartment across the hall and one floor up from Nevaeh’s, adding the same carpet covers the floors in Nevaeh’s home. Officials from the Monroe County Sheriff's had no comment, a spokeswoman said this morning.
Now relatives are waiting to hear whether she was also molested, Jennifer Buchanan's cousin Shaun Lawson said this morning. Sean Lawson is Diana Lawson's son.
"All they've said is she was buried alive," Sean Lawson said. "There's more tests still to be done. As much evidence as they collected, they're waiting on evidence to come back.

UPDATED: Nevaeh's Cause Of Death Out
Autopsy Results Indicate Monroe Girl Had Dirt In Her Lungs
POSTED: Tuesday, July 14, 2009
UPDATED: 12:24 pm EDT July 15, 2009
<snipped>
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's office said dirt was found in the girl's lungs, meaning she was either held down to the ground or buried alive.
"They're waiting on preliminary results to maybe see if she was sexually molested or not," Lawson said.
Lawson said waiting for answers is hard. But he said he believes investigators are doing everything they can.
Investigators said early examinations did not identify a cause of death because no outward signs of trauma were found on Buchanan's body. There were carpet fibers found under the girl's finger nails. Neighbors said investigators have taken carpet samples from different apartments in an attempt to find out where Buchanan might have been.
Authorities said they plan to search the Monroe apartment complex where Buchanan lived again.
Buchanan's mother, Jennifer, did not answer knocks on her door or her phone.
"I can't tell you where she's at. I don't know where she's at right now," Diana Lawson said. "She could be with friends. She could be anywhere."
Investigators said they plan to question a woman who has ties to George Kennedy and Roy Smith. Both Kennedy and Smith are convicted sex offenders and have been named people of interest in the case.
The Monroe County sheriff will hold a news conference Wednesday to release more details.

Hunt for killer continues
July 15. 2009 11:08AM
<snipped>
Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said that the task force remains intact and that the FBI continues to be involved in the case until an arrest is made.
"This continues to be our highest priority," Sheriff Crutchfield said. "We aren't going to let off at all."
The results of the autopsy were released Tuesday and Sheriff Crutchfield said in a prepared statement that the death was by aspiration of fine particulate material (dirt).
"This means that Nevaeh's face was forcibly maintained or embedded into a dirt surface," he wrote. "Whether this resulted from another person forcibly pressing her face into dirt or whether she was buried alive could not be determined."
The sheriff said later that investigators are still waiting for results of testing being completed by the Michigan State Police crime lab.
He maintained his policy of not releasing certain specific information, such as if Nevaeh was sexually assaulted, what type of evidence had been collected and if a prime suspect has been developed.
The sheriff said it is vital to the investigation that details known only by the suspect and investigators are kept as secretive as possible.
"We're not releasing information and certain test results for a reason," Sheriff Crutchfield said. He added that he still believes the person involved with Nevaeh's abduction and murder was a local person or someone who is familiar with the area based on where she was buried.

Autopsy Results Show Nevaeh Buchanan May Have Been Buried Alive
Findings Lead Police to Believe Murdered 5-Year-Old Could Have Been Buried Alive
July 15, 2009, 2009
<snipped>
Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield was not immediately available for comment today, but said shortly after the discovery of Nevaeh's body that there were no visible signs of abuse and that she had been buried along the River Raisin "for awhile."
Crutchfield said Jennifer Buchanan was cooperating with police, but would not comment when asked if they believe she knows something about the crime or who murdered her daughter.
Whoever the killer is, Sherry Buchanan told the station, "I hope they give him everything that's got coming to him."
"I told the officer, I said, 'You're not going to be able to protect him,'" she said. "I said 'One way or another, I said, I am going to get to him."
When asked in May if Buchanan herself was a person of interest, Crutchfield replied "no comment," according to ABC affiliate WXYZ.
