The Nevaeh Buchanan Task Force issued a press release Friday that discusses the number of tips it has received to date and attempts to clear up some rumors that have been talked about in regards to the investigation.

The task force reports it is continuing to follow up on the more than 1,200 tips and resulting leads on the case, in which the 5-year-old Monroe girl went missing May 24 and was found dead June 4.

"Only partial results have been received on the analysis of evidence recovered at the gravesite and submitted to the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory," the notice said.

In the meantime, the task force reports there is a rumor circulating "in the news community" that a driver's license of George Kennedy was found in the River Raisin. Mr. Kennedy was reported as a person of interest early in the investigation.

However, the story as related in the rumor is not correct.

Here is what the officers are saying: "An expired state of Michigan identification card belonging to George Kennedy was found by a passerby on Wednesday, July 22, in a small creek alongside Telegraph Road near where Kennedy was residing. It does not appear to have any significance to the Buchanan investigation."

Michelle Rousselo talked with her 4-year-old daughter, Madison, when Nevaeh Buchanan went missing and was murdered.

"We didn&#8217;t keep anything from her," the Monroe resident said. "She saw the helicopters flying around and said she hoped they would bring her home."

Mrs. Rousselo said the innocence of her daughter brought a tear to her eye. That&#8217;s why she and her husband, Andy, took their two children to the Elite Motor Mall, 14975 S. Dixie Hwy., Saturday for a free DNA LifePrint kit.

Dozens of parents came out to receive kits for their children.

"The Nevaeh case was really eye-opening for us because it happened so close to home," Mrs. Rousselo said. "As parents, we want to keep our children safe, so if something like that were to happen again here, we will be prepared."

David Proffitt, chief operating officer of Elite, said the company has hosted several of the DNA LifePrint child safety events in the last five years.

John Walsh, an anti-crime advocate whose son was murdered, endorses events like this throughout the country. Mr. Proffitt said someone from Mr. Walsh&#8217;s foundation contacted him to host Saturday&#8217;s event in response to the Nevaeh Buchanan case.

"The kit increases the chance of finding missing kids," Mr. Proffitt said. "The kit has the most critical tools to help the police."

After reading the Monroe County Sheriff's latest news release on the cause of death of little Nevaeh Buchanan, I felt compelled to write to you. Since the sheriff believes you may still walk among us, perhaps you will read this letter. In the event you do, just fill in your name in the spot I've left blank in the greeting; you know who you are!

I struggle to understand how any human being could do what you've done to another &#8212; it's unspeakable that you've done it to a child &#8212; and I hope you soon come to your senses and confess. I'd like to try to understand why you've done this, and, why it keeps happening in America.

Perhaps you're a regular at a local strip joint where paying five bucks for a bottle of beer is worth it to have some young woman who sells herself for your dollar bills dance naked in front of you? Then, because you have no desire or moral compass to develop a normal, loving relationship with a mature, adult woman, you kept your eye peeled for a small, defenseless, easy to overpower target?

You have a choice and trust me; it is your only true option.

Confess!

Start by confessing to God; tell Him what you've done and ask Him to forgive you. Then, go to the sheriff and do the same. Knowing how soft our country is these days you'll probably spend the rest of your life in prison instead of tasting the electricity &#8212; or worse &#8212; that many would like for you.

Why would that be easier? Because if you don't, I believe that nothing the sheriff or the law &#8212; or the thousands out there who want just five minutes alone with you &#8212; can do to you will be worse than what God will do once you've taken your last gasp!

But what do I know.

Fear and technology are keeping kids indoors

Joy Passatta loaded her two children, a 12-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son, onto their bikes on a hot summer morning. They rode a mile to swim class, where the kids burned off more energy in the pool. Then they biked home.

And despite all that, Passatta, 37, still worries her kids don't play outside like she did growing up.

Her kids are not alone. It's no secret that even in the warm, sunny days of summer, children don't play outside like they used to.

But Clements (Rhonda Clements is an education professor) said fear plays a role, too. With tragic headlines -- such as the recent story of Nevaeh Buchanan, who was taken from her Monroe apartment complex and found dead weeks later -- parents are often reminded about the danger of letting kids roam free. So Clements said, they tell their kids they can't play outside alone. And that carries a dangerous message of its own.

"You don't want to become the hovering parent," Clements said, "so protective and fearful of letting kids go outdoors and making use of play spaces."

MONROE - An expired state of Michigan identification card that was found Wednesday in a small creek along Telegraph Road does not appear to have any relevance to the ongoing investigation surrounding the slaying of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan, according to a statement issued by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.

The document belonged to George Kennedy, 39, a registered sex offender who has been described by authorities as a boyfriend of the child's mother, Jennifer Buchanan, and a "person of interest" in the case.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said the ID card was found by a passerby, but "does not appear to have any significance to the Buchanan investigation."

A task force of multiple agencies has been reviewing more than 1,200 tips, the sheriff's office said.

MONROE, MI (WTOL) - Michigan police are discounting a rumor involving the Nevaeh Buchanan murder case.

Monroe County investigators say an expired state of Michigan ID card belonging to George Kennedy, which was discovered this week in a small creek, is not linked to the murder case.

Earlier in the investigation Kennedy was named a person of interest.

Evidence in the Nevaeh Buchanan murder case is being tested inside a Michigan crime lab. Tonight, 13abc's Alexis Means gives us a rare look inside.

Scientists wouldn't talk about the Nevaeh case, but showed us tools they're using to solve her case and thousands of other crimes.

Forensic scientists spend hours trying to solve major crimes. In the trace evidence lab, Cherly Lozen demonstrates how items like tire tracks and glass can create possble leads in a case. "Usually it's just a residue from the shoe that's left on the glass. And to enhance that we use something like a black fingerprint powder and just lightly dust it, and you can see the the tread design of the shoe matches up."

She uses a special light and goggles to look for fibers. "If you look through the goggles, you'll be able to see some of the fibers fluorescing bright orange." The fibers can be chemically analyzed through a powerful microscope.

They can digitally enhance prints and import them into a database containing nearly three million fingerprints.

DNA evidence has helped to solve cold cases. The DNA lab's Danielle Hankinson says, "Basically we're looking for biological fluids or biological material that will contain DNA."

I'm impatiently waiting for justice for Nevaeh & an arrest to be made soon! :banghead:

I can't help it but I keep checking the local news reports & the internet for this to happen everyday. It just irks me that LE even had the nerve to say Monore's Angel Nevaeh didn't suffer! :furious:

I keep thinking about how scared she was when she realized that she was in danger & to top it all off to be buried alive. One dosen't get dirt in their throat & lungs, if they weren't struggling to escape, from being either having their face shoved down into dirt, or having someone hold them down while covering them with dirt & cement. :cry:


Do any charts show if an arrest is in the near future or is the arrest being delayed while LE gets back all of the lab results back?

I apologize if this was covered already in a chart. I seem to be having a bit of fibromyalgia brain fog today. Along with catching up on many other cases & media searching.....multi-tasking today to catch up on so much. This really makes me that we even have to have so many missing, & murdered little ones & adults. When will this ever stop & LE starts to keep offenders & those who have harmed anyone behind bars for way longer if not forever! :furious:


I have a gut feeling that her mother is the evil monster that did this.
Could it be she was angry that Nevaeh wet her pants after they walked to K-Marts? JB could have very well lost her patience that day & it went to far. I have a feeling that the carpet fibers are going to match the carpet in JB's apartment. I am thinking that even if the carpet is the same as her neighboor upstairs, that there would be chemical differences from cleaning the carpets etc.

Even if the carpet fibers match the one in the upstairs apartment (maybe from the same roll, batch, or however carpet is made), I would assume the DNA and other evidence would not be the same. See what I mean? Same basic carpet fiber, but from different people walking, sitting, spilling, etc., it would match one carpet (JB's) more than the other (upstairs neighbor).

I don't know if the mom was the killer, but she sure did appear guilty about something. Would the mother have been able to bring the cement over to the river? Did she have help? Is she another Casey?

Fair can't escape fear

A nagging fear dwells in the minds of many cautious parents at this year&#8217;s Monroe County Fair.

Along the midway, near the grandstand, even in the livestock areas, some moms and dads admit that Nevaeh Buchanan&#8217;s murder has them keeping even tighter tabs on their children.

After all, a murderer still might be on the loose.

"You never know, it could be anybody since the case hasn&#8217;t been solved," said Lisa Kuehnlein, who was keeping a close rein on her daughter, Madalyn, 4, along the fairgrounds Monday.

"Something like that would never happen at the fair," Vicki McAllister said of the abduction and murder of 5-year-old Nevaeh, whose body was found June 4 half-buried and covered in concrete along the banks of the River Raisin in Raisinville Township. "But something like that would never happen in Monroe, would it?

Could the culprit be at the fair? "Of course you can&#8217;t answer that," Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield said. "The only way you&#8217;ll know for sure is when we finally identify the person involved."

Could the killer still be in the area? "Absolutely," he said.

Although two "persons of interest" in the case are in jail on unrelated charges, the sheriff indicated no break in the case appears imminent.

The sheriff said the investigation into the murder is continuing and interviews are done every day that generate leads.

"Eventually we&#8217;re going to solve it," he said. "I think we&#8217;ll solve it, but it will not be as quickly as we hoped for or certainly not as quickly as the public wants, but we&#8217;ll solve it."

The Monroe County Sheriff&#8217;s Department said today the task force investigating the death of Nevaeh Buchanan is offering up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.

More than 1,200 tips have been received and police say evidence still is being analyzed from her shallow grave along the River Raisin in Monroe County&#8217;s Raisinville Township, where she was discovered June 4.

Nevaeh disappeared 10 days earlier from outside an apartment complex in Monroe. An autopsy revealed she suffocated after inhaling dirt.

The FBI is offering up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the abduction and murder of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan.

While he would not say that the investigation has stalled, Monroe County Sheriff Tilman Crutchfield did acknowledge that there have been fewer tips lately.

"They&#8217;ve slowed down considerably," Sheriff Crutchfield said. "It&#8217;s one of the more difficult investigations law enforcement can get involved with. It&#8217;s a very difficult investigation."

The sheriff said a task force still is operating and the FBI is still present in the county. He insisted investigators are not frustrated at the lack of major developments.

"We still have leads we&#8217;re following up on," Sheriff Crutchfield said. "It&#8217;s a very active case. We will not stop until the matter is solved."

This is the second time reward money has been offered. The FBI offered $20,000 for information leading to the recovery of Nevaeh or her body. Newport resident Guy Bickley and his stepfather found the grave off Dixon Rd.

Mr. Bickley, 52, said he has not received any reward money, though an FBI agent said he was eligible.

Mr. Bickley said he isn&#8217;t worried about it under the circumstances, but feels if the FBI promises something, it should follow through.

"It is a little weird," he said. "The FBI agent stopped by about four or five days after I found Nevaeh and he said it might take a while. I haven&#8217;t heard anything about it since. Nobody&#8217;s talked to me."

Mr. Bickley said if the reward money came from the community, he probably wouldn&#8217;t accept it. But since it was the federal government, he would. He said if the reward is paid, he plans to split it with his stepfather who was with him that day.

Today marks three months since the five-year-old Monroe Girl disappeared from her apartment complex. Fishermen found the body of Nevaeh Buchancan eleven days after her disappearance on the banks of the River Raisin.

All this time later, frustration is growing, as tips and information from police dry up.
Although Neveah's body has been found and laid to rest, her family says that's only half the battle. Justice hasn't been served as long as her killer is still on the streets.

At her gravesite, topped with small tokens for Nevaeh, her cousin can say what he wants her to hear. "I do love you, Nevaeh. One day we're gonna have the killers, they're gonna be charged, one day hopefully. All we can do is pray and hope for you, just wish there was some sign you could give us."

Her cousin says though Nevaeh's death touched the community, parents still don't see the lesson. "I see kids playing outside, parents ain't nowhere. In the house, that's all it takes. That's all Nevaeh was-- outside. Parent was in the house. Gone. Just like that. No I love you. No goodbye. No nothing. You know, no hug, no last kiss, just gone. Then nothing but worries, heartache, pain, sorrow."

Fundraiser planned:

The extended family of Nevaeh Buchanan will host a fundraising spaghetti dinner from 3 to 10 p.m. Sunday at Sgt. Stanley Romanow-ski Post 6896, Veterans of Foreign Wars, hall, 28945 Joy Rd., Westland.

The goal is to collect enough money to erect a memorial park bench in Nevaeh&#8217;s honor at Riverside Early Childhood Center and to start an annual preschool scholarship fund.

Public prayer Sunday:

A public prayer and music event to help lead police to Nevaeh&#8217;s killer is set for 10 a.m. Sunday at Monroe Middle School, 503 Washington St.

The Rev. Dale Hayford of Crosswalk Community Church, who has been the family&#8217;s spiritual adviser, said the public is invited to the service.

"We know this person is still out there," he said. "He can strike again. Every child on our streets is in danger."

ID program coming:

A child identification program in Nevaeh&#8217;s honor will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 10 at Bobby&#8217;s Bouncers indoor play facility, 38620 Michigan Ave., Wayne.

Organizers of upcoming events are hoping to raise enough money to purchase a playground bench in honor of Nevaeh Buchanan and to remind parents not to let their children out of their sights.

Risa Thompson, Nevaeh&#8217;s fourth cousin, said she and others in communities outside of Monroe are hoping to raise money to place a bench at Riverside Early Learning Center in honor of the 5-year-old girl who was abducted and killed earlier this summer.

"We wanted to put up something positive with her name," said Mrs. Thompson, a Garden City resident who has family members living in Monroe. "We need to keep her name alive."

The idea is to remind parents of Nevaeh as they rest on the bench and to keep their eyes on their children at all times. Nevaeh was abducted from her apartment complex on N. Macomb St. in broad daylight with people in the vicinity.

"No matter where your children are, they are in jeopardy of being taken," Mrs. Thompson said. "We need to bring awareness to this. It can happen in a second. It can happen that quickly."

Fundraisers also will be held to help support the Nevaeh Amyah Preschool Scholarship Fund. The fund would help pay for preschool for families in need.

WESTLAND, Mich. -- The family and friends of Nevaeh Buchanan hope to raise enough money to buy a playground bench in honor of Nevaeh. Organizers hope the bench will be a reminder to parents not to let their children out of their sites.

Five-year-old Nevaeh, who was abducted and killed earlier this summer, graduated from the preschool program there just days before her abduction. She was taken from her Monroe apartment complex in broad daylight.

The bench would be placed at Riverside Early Learning Center. It costs several hundred dollars.

Sunday's event is a spaghetti dinner at the VFW Hall on 28045 Joy Road. in Westland. It runs from 3 p.m until 10 p.m.

The fundraiser will also feature raffles for prizes, hourly 50/50 raffles, live music and clowns for kids.

The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children.

Nevaeh Buchanan's name no longer dominates the headlines. Local television newscasts and CNN's Nancy Grace have moved on to other topics.

But Nevaeh's murder still weighs heavily on the minds of her relatives. No arrests have been made in the death of the 5-year-old girl, who was buried in a shallow grave near the River Raisin three months ago. Police have released no new information, and relatives say rumors have been running rampant in the absence of new leads.

Friends and family of the slain girl gathered Sunday at the Romanowski Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Westland to remember Nevaeh. They hoped to raise enough money to erect a memorial park bench and to start an annual scholarship fund for needy preschoolers in her hometown of Monroe.

"The (Monroe County Sheriff's Office) assigned a new detective to the case, but he didn't have anything new to tell us."

Shane Hinojosa, Nevaeh's father, said the lack of progress in the case has been "frustrating."

Another difficulty, Nevaeh's relatives say, has been dealing with rumors.

"There's all sorts of controversy still going on," said Rhonda Farless, one of Nevaeh's distant cousins.

"If you look online, it's like a lynch mob mentality.

Jennifer Buchanan was invited to Sunday's event, Thompson said, but she didn't come.

Thompson asked that donations to be made to the Monroe Public Schools in Nevaeh's name.

An attempted abduction is being investigated in Monroe after a mother reported to police that her daughter&#8217;s arm was grabbed while they walked in an area park.

Police said the 4-year-old&#8217;s mother told them they were walking early Sunday evening in St. Mary&#8217;s Park when a white man in his 50s grabbed the girl&#8217;s arm and said, &#8220;Come here.&#8221;

Police said the girl and her mother started screaming and the man ran off over a bridge and into downtown Monroe.

The man is described as having short brown hair, a goatee and was last seen wearing a white button down shirt with dark pants.

&#8220;It&#8217;s normally very quiet, it&#8217;s very child-friendly. It&#8217;s a good atmosphere to bring your child to. It&#8217;s a good park,&#8221; said parent Angela Harrison.

Parents in the area said the report of the stranger brings back memories of 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan.

Another attempted abduction reported in Monroe County has parents on edge.

It happened Sunday evening around 6:30 near West Elm and Godfroy avenues.

According to the Monroe Evening News, a man approached a young girl, grabbed her by the arm and said "come here." The girl screamed and ran back to her mother.

The suspect was seen running toward St. Mary's Park.

The suspect described as an older man, wearing a white shirt and dark pants.

He had short, dark hair and a gray goatee.

Detectives investigating the abduction and murder of Nevaeh Buchanan plan to look into a report involving a man who reportedly grabbed a girl at St. Mary&#8217;s Park in Monroe this weekend.

Investigators said there is nothing that indicates the incident is related to the Nevaeh case, but detectives said all suspicious activity is being scrutinized.

"It sparks curiosity," said Monroe County Sheriff&#8217;s Detective Sgt. Heath Velliquette. "It is suspicious."

Monroe police reported a girl was approached by a man who grabbed her by the arm and said "come here." Reports said the girl screamed and ran back to her mother, who was nearby.

The incident happened about 6:30 p.m. Sunday near W. Elm and Godfroy Aves. The man was last seen running toward St. Mary&#8217;s Park and across the Martin Luther King Bridge. He was described as an older man wearing a white shirt and dark pants. He had short, dark hair and a gray goatee.

Sgt. Velliquette said detectives will be looking to see if there is any possible link to the death of Nevaeh, who was abducted in May and whose body was later found in a shallow grave along the River Raisin.

"It needs to be looked into further," Sgt. Velliquette said. "But we don&#8217;t have all the information. It is our intent to delve further into it."

An attempted abduction in Monroe has some parents on high alert. It happened Sunday evening near St. Mary's park.

Andrea Boyd walks her two little ones through St. Mary's park all the time. That's why the news of an attempted abduction has her on edge. "With having a little one like this and especially with the Nevaeh case going on it was quite scary to know that someone is still out there and around here all the time doing that, says Boyd.

Nevaeh Buchanan, 5, was kidnapped back in May. Her body was later found in a shallow grave along the River Raisin. No one has been arrested in connection with her death.

Monroe police say a woman filed a report Monday evening saying the evening before she was walking with her daughter and a friend near Elm Street and Godfrey. The young girl was walking ahead of the two adults. The woman told police that the man approached her daughter, grabbed her by the arm, and said come here. The little girl didn't, and she started screaming and ran back towards her mother.

Police say if you find yourself in a similar situation, don't wait to report it. "You can't even respond to the same area and say gee, I hope I got this same subject still in the park 10 minutes after it happened, 25 hours," says Lt. Charles Abel.

Police are still investigating and need your help locating this would-be abductor before he's successful. The woman told police the man was white, between the ages of 40 and 60. He was wearing a white button up shirt. He had dark hair and a gray goatee. If you have any information, call Monroe police at 734-243-7500.

Monroe, Mich., police are investigating an attempted kidnapping over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

The attempted kidnapping happened on Sunday, Sept. 7, around 6:30 p.m. near West Elm and Godfroy avenues.

The man was last seen running toward St. Mary's Park and the Martin Luther King Bridge.

Police said a man approached a girl, grabbed her by the arm, and said "come here." Reports say the girl screamed and ran back to her mother who was nearby.

This is the area earlier this year where 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan disappeared and was later found murdered.

Her murder is still unsolved.

Nevaeh's grandmother said just last week she spoke to one of the detective's working on Nevaeh's case. All he could tell her at the time is that he has information, but he could not release it yet.

"Like I told him, my inside's are eating me up," she said. "I said, I got to know something pretty soon, I just want to know, know that my baby didn't die in pain or anything that what I want to know."

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department said that Sunday's attempted abduction has nothing to do with Nevaeh's case.
