Both the Justice Department and the Georgia Senate are doing inquiries. This article says GA Senate hearings are supposed to start in November.

I’m beyond very aggravated with Sheriff Labat. It’s disgusting all the parties and frivolous stuff they were funding while inmates accused of petty crime were literally dying from being incarcerated in his hellhole of a jail outfit. It’s truly appalling. Eaten alive by bugs, for goodness sake!!! I think Labat shouldn’t be the sheriff any longer. IMO, no way was he clueless about everything, and it doesn’t mean crap for him to fire his subordinates. A fish stinks from the head down, as they say.

He is a thieving bureaucrat. All on our taxpayers’ dollars. It is not even LE - he is more like a white-collar bureaucrat stealing because no one checks.

He has to be stripped of LE status and put on trial publicly. He is evil. A corrupt public servant. And, he has to reimburse from own pocket, too.
 
Some examples Channel 2 Action News found in inmate welfare fund expenditures documents that were provided to us include $509,073.76 for extra uniforms for officers, $39,813.43 in gift cards from The Honey Baked Ham Company, intended for staff at a holiday party that was postponed due to the pandemic, $5,000 for a City of South Fulton District 3 Thanksgiving giveaway, $39,550 for NIXLE Notification System, $2,601 for florist orders, and a cluster of expenses ranging from a face painting booth, to DJ services, to a tropical bounce house, and others linked to employee appreciation and community diversion.

“There was no criminal intent as we have found. Everything that has come out of the inmate welfare fund has been spent on the betterment of the sheriff’s office,” LaBat said.

Infuriating. This is not a staff issue. It's a leadership issue. This sheriff needs to be removed. Pronto.

Inmate welfare fund is not sheriff's office. Essentially, the sheriff expropriated others' money. He is responsible for the inmates welfare, and he stole from them. Florist orders and face painting booths and monitors that never came.

This sheriff's department (under THIS sheriff) stole from the inmates welfare fund to the tune of hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hence my belief that Labat should no longer be serving as sheriff. This all happened under his leadership and if he didn't know he is incompetent and if he did he is a thief. Either way, he needs to be fired. MOO

Channel 2 Action News tallied roughly $2.25 million tied to sheriff’s office vehicles or what appear to be vehicle-related expenses.

Of those expenses, two specific line items for inmate transport vehicles and inmate transport buses, totaled slightly less than $500,000.

“Even if the ordinance is vague, do you believe that any vehicles for the sheriff’s office were intended to come out of the inmate welfare fund?” Winne asked. “Well again, a lot of them were purchased out of the wrong fund and to that extent there stands the potential for that vehicle to be assigned specifically to detainees,” LaBat responded.

As if the excuse "well they accidently used the wrong funds but potentially we might eventually use one of those vehicles to transport a detainee so maybe we can justify having taken the money form the inmate welfare fund to buy them" is acceptable.
