GA - Rapper Young + others indicted on RICO & other charges, May 2022. Trial ongoing April 2023, interruptions, lawyer arrested. Fulton County.

@cathyrusson

Retired detective David Quinn is the state's next witness. We've heard his voice a lot during Bean's time on the stand. He and detective Vince Velazquez were on the case of the 2013 shooting we've heard a lot about that ended with the red car crashed into the laundromat. Quinn and Velazquez also were in the TV show The First 48 and their own show ATL Homicide.

NEW: #YoungThug's attorney motions for a mistrial. Judge Glanville denied. Steel wanted a mistrial due to Detective Quinn testifying that he talks to witnesses to get "truthful" information. WATCH his argument:

In front of the jury, Judge Glanville yells at #YoungThug's attorney Brian Steel telling him he's not prepared.

Jury was sent out and Brian Steel was heated about Judge Glanville addressing him that way in front of the jury.

Steel asks for Judge Glanville to recuse himself. "I believe this honorable court is bias against Mr. Williams and/or his counsel."

Judge Glanville denies #YoungThug's attorney's motion to recuse himself.

He feels the judges bias against the defense, and that will have an impact on the jury. The judge has called him unprofessional, and now unprepared in front of the jury.

For the first time in a couple of weeks, I'm back in the courtroom for #YSL/#YoungThug trial. Right now, they are playing recordings from Adrian Bean's jail calls to the jury. There are a couple of calls so this might take some time to get through all of them.

2:00 PM · Mar 22, 2024

Prosecutors appear to be trying to play a video interview Det. Quinn did with Adrian Bean on Sept. 17, 2013 but they are having technical difficulties playing the video.

4:05 PM · Mar 22, 2024

It appears they've found a solution and the video is now being played.

4:07 PM · Mar 22, 2024

No idea why a 10-minute break was called now that is 5 p.m. instead of just dismissing the jury for the day.

5:00 PM · Mar 22, 2024

Jury will be dismissed for the day and court will resume Monday once they are back from the 10-minute break.

Prosecutors said they didn’t found out about these interactions until Dec. 2023 and notified defense attorneys as soon as they found out.Steel said he had not interviewed Quinn about the interactions.Quinn said he didn’t make a note of any the interactions with Young .

Third interaction, Quinn said Young introduced Quinn to his sister, gives him her phone number and asked him to be their security on the road.Fourth interaction, Quinn said he saw Young and Walker Murphy, DK.

Judge Glanville said he would admit the statements as long as a proper foundation is laid down.

Most of the morning has been spent discussing interactions Det. Quinn said happened between him and Young at Neiman Marcus shortly after the Sep. 13, 2013 incident.

Correction: Incident occurred Sept. 11, 2013.
Quinn told him that Adrian Bean was placing him in the car and Young said he wasn’t involved.

Former Det. Quinn said he told Young , a couple of weeks after the Sept. 11, 2013 incident to "go make your million dollars" and to "stay the **** off Cleveland (Ave.)”.

Motions hearing scheduled for Monday April 1 will be moved to Tuesday, possibly Wednesday, next week because Judge Glanville had a death of a close family friend and the service is on Monday.

After his plea deal, Murphy’s attorney told @ajc he wasn’t sure if Murphy would be called to testify and he was ready to move on.“My client doesn’t know anything, (during) a lot of the acts they are alleging, he was in prison. My client doesn’t know anything,” said his attorney

Murphy, who is also known as DK, is alleged to have been in the car during the Sept. 11, 2013 incident. In an interview with Channel 2 Action News, Murphy said YSL was not a gang.“I would rather say it’s more like a record label or a family,” Murphy said.

Former Det. David Quinn won’t be back until Friday to continue to testify about the Sept. 11, 2013 incident.Young ’s attorney Brian Steel said former co-defendant Walter Murphy is expected to testify soon as a state witness.Murphy took a plea deal Dec. 2022.

No #YSL again today. Yesterday was cancelled due to a medical issue defendant Rodalius Ryan was having. Looks like that's still an issue. Tomorrow is slated to be half day, afternoon only. Friday normal day (whatever that means in this trial). Jurors are off ALL next week for spring break. Attorneys were going to argue motions Monday & Tuesday but Judge Glanville has a friend's funeral on Monday.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - The first week of April will be hugely important in the internationally watched criminal trial of acclaimed rapper Young in Atlanta.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville has set tentative plans to consider a motion from some of Young ’s co-defendants to limit the number of future witnesses, as well as a motion from the rapper’s most visible attorney, Brian Steel, over a recent Georgia Supreme Court ruling.

A motion filed March 20 by attorneys representing Deamonte Kendrick - aka Yak Gotti - asked Glanville to to limit the number of witnesses prosecutors still plan on calling in what is becoming Georgia’s longest trial in history.

Photog has not been let in yet. Hopefully they won't start without us like has happened before...

Witness in #YSL #YoungThug had to be picked up because she failed to appear according to subpoena. She is in custody and will testify today in jail clothes. The state is not announcing her name and camera has been told not to show her. Attorneys are still arguing over this.

YT's fit today.

Prosecutor Love explaining what happened with this witness over the last two days. She did not show for court on Tuesday (this is before we knew court would be cancelled). They had to issue a material witness warrant for her arrest. She "isn't a fan" of the prosecution office according to Love.

This witness thought about ending her life rather than testify. When prosecutors contacted her this week, the witness told her she was in the hospital. Prosecution investigator/s had eyes on her house and her car was in the driveway. They got an arrest warrant.

Defense arguing against not showing the witness saying the public has the right to see her.

Judge Glanville denied the defense request to show the witness. We will have audio.

Witness "A.B." is involving an armed robbery on May 12, 2013. A.B. told police #YoungThug and Walter Murphy robbed her and another person, possibly 's brother. She is now uncooperative. Was arrested yesterday for failing to show up to testify. She is in jail clothes. Judge Glanville has called a recess to give defense teams, that choose to, an opportunity to speak to her before she testifies. Judge has ruled that the camera can't show her but we will have audio (and point the camera elsewhere).

Judge Glanville said he was concerned about defense attorneys not being able to talk to the witness about what she is going to testify and decided to give them 30 minutes to talk with her before she is brought out to the stand.

Love asked Young 's attorney Brian Steel to provide any information that he might have about how the witness was going to testify or if he interviewed her before.Steel said he would be happy to disclose that information to Judge Glanville, not to the state.

The state's first witness of the day was arrested after she failed to appear and a material witness warrant was issued.ADA Love said the witness was arrested after being subpoena, not showing up and a warrant being issued.

It's been close to an hour and we are still on a break.

From my understanding, the witness is there to testify about an armed robbery allegedly involving Young and Walter Murphy on May 12, 2013.The incident is not an overt act and is actually not in the indictment.

Attorney Careton Matthews said, based upon his discussion with the witness, he believes the court should look into possibly appointing an attorney to represent her due to potential "culpability issues”.

YoungThug Trial: Day 49 Today's first witness REFUSED to appear and dodged the subpoena, so she was arrested and is being FORCED to take the stand today. (Detective Quinn couldn't make it today, so the state is putting up other witnesses in the meantime.)

Holy crap. This witness refuses to be involved in this case. Ms. Love says the witness told her she was contemplating ending her own life. When asked why, she said "because y'all (the state) are doing this". Ms. Love says she left after that, but when they called her to come testify, she said "she was in the hospital". But apparently, the state had "eyes on her home" and "her car did not leave the driveway" so they got an arrest warrant. Great way to deal with someone who says you've made them su***dal :)

1711655601598.png

Bruce Harvey makes sure it is absolutely clear that the defense knew NONE of any of what Ms. Love said until she just said it right now. He says arresting a witness and her instable mental state is all BRADY MATERIAL and the defense was entitled to know all of this beforehand. He objects the witness testifies until they can deal with the new information accordingly. He also wants to make clear that the state is causing the delay today by hiding this information until now.

Sounds like the judge disagrees and will allow her to testify anyway. However, Steel brings up a separate objection - he provides caselaw stating that if this witness completely "shuts down" and refuses to answer anything (like, actual silence, not "i dont recall"), the state may not ask leading questions or introduce any of her statements as they will be considered hearsay. Ms. Love asks the judge to ask Steel if he has any information (from past interviews during his preperation) that leads him to believe this witness will be completely silent. Steel says he is not obligated to answer in front of the state, but would happily answer privately with the judge. Then Steel asks for a bathroom break.

The judge's ruling is that the defense will have 30 minutes to talk to this witness (who is literally in handcuffs rn) before he will have her take the stand. The state somehow still objects to even that, but it was overruled.we're on break for 30 glanville minutes.

My understanding of who this witness is: in 2013, this lady Ms. A. Bennett told the police that she got robbed by , DK, and someone she thinks was 's brother at her apartment. she did not call the police at that time. some time later that night at like 3 AM, she hears shots outside her apartment, calls the police to report the shots, and tells them about the robbery.when police tried to follow up on this, they were not able to get a hold of her, so the investigation was dropped. the statements still exist though, and they want to use this witness to get those statements in. she obviously doesn't want to testify, but she's the only way to get them in.

Ms. Bennett takes the stand, in handcuffs. Cameras aren't allowed to show her face. Oh - btw, this incident is also nowhere in the indictment and not an overt act.

The witness was brought into the courtroom, in front of the jury, wearing handcuffs.

After close to three hours from the scheduled 1 p.m. start, the jury is finally being brought in. Glanville asked the media not to show the witness’ face but audio recording will be allowed.

“I feel like I was forced to come here,” the witness said after testifying that she did not want to be there.

ADA Love asked the witness if her mother was alive in May 2013 and the witness did not want to talk about her mother. Love apologized for bringing it up but the witness said she didn’t have to apologize. “I know you did it on purpose, it’s all good,” the witness said.
